where do you find the build number?

I used sysmetrix to find it. Its the only way I know of. If you have sysmetrix call up any skin, open configuration window, go to textual information and scroll down to OS build. Click on it and it will show up on the skin. Helluva way to do it but ...

You normally use the winver command, just type it in the start search window or do a Winkey + R.

No text :* on mine version 6.1 build 7601

Start Menu search box displays "Search Programs and Files" even if "Search Programs and Control Panel" option is turned off

Submitted by sfsdfd on June 27, 2009 to Bug

The search box in the Windows 7 displays "Search programs and files" as a helpful hint of the domain of the search. Its behavior can be modified by toggling the "search programs and Control Panel" option in the "Customize Start Menu" dialog. However, if this option is disabled, the search box continues to read "Search programs and files," even though programs aren't searched.

Change the text displayed in the search box by displaying only "Search files" if the "Search programs and Control Panel" option is disabled.

Jim, is yours an OEM version?

No, I got it directly from Microsoft as a download.

Then perhaps OEM versions are not affected.

Frankief - I went to the start menu customize dialog and unchecked search programs and control panel. The text did not appear. This may be something specific to the non-OEM versions.

Mine is set to "search programs and control panel" don't know if this will help or not. Just FYI>

ditto here, but I didn't see an option to display "search files", where is this located?

An interesting observation_ I opened Impulse today, it updated itself. There were 4 updates available: one for WB, one for Fences Pro, one for Theme Manager and one for Object Dock 2. After the updates were installed and the obligatory reboot, I now have the ugly text! So, I have to conclude that it is a Stardock update that causes this to appear where it never did before. It was not there prior to the updates done through Impulse.#:( x_x

Okay, here's this. When I did the uninstall of Windowblinds through Impulse it updated itself automatically. After the reboot and reinstall then another reboot I still have no text there. That may rule out windowblinds and Impulse.

would be nice if these updates were identified (with changes noted) somewhere on the opening page. Last time I accessed Impulse was on 12/20/10, it's just not a program that I access with any regularity unless there is a reason.

I have the text while running plain Aero, so I`m sure that it`s not related to WB. Most likely your reboot after the WB update also activated a Microsoft Update that had been downloaded before.

I applied Windows Aero and the text is there. It is also on the following four skins in WB. It ends at Aero Frost which has none.

Two of them, Aero Colors and Aero Clay are by StarDock Design. So is Aero Frost.

I had no pending updates from Microsoft. I do not know which of the 4 updates through Impulse prompted it and I don't know if doing a System Restore and installing the 4 updates in Impulse seperately with reboot between would identify waht prompted the text to appear. I could do it for reasons of helping others but to me it isn't that big of a deal, just curious to know why it suddenly appeared after a year and a half of it never being there. It definately was not a Windows update that brought it on. Of that, I am positive.<3 :')

Now, this is really weird...

After I successfully removed the malware from my companion's computer, I decided to go ahead and install Windows 7 SP1 on his computer.  He does not use Windowblinds.  Prior to the install of it, he did not have that text in his search box.  Now he does!  He has Windows 7 Home Premium, 32 bit.

I have not installed SP1 on my computer yet, and I do not have that text in my search box.  I use Windowblinds.  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, 32 bit.

Could it be SP1 that is doing that?

From where I'm sitting it would appear to be specific to Aero. At least on my machine it is. Those skins that don't have Aero don't have the text.

I don't have the text but applied an aero skin and it did show up, so...

newbie question; WTF is aero. Obviously I don't have that invoked but why would I consider it in the first place and what effects am I missing because it is not and how do I turn it on???

I had it prior to downloading SP1

You do have Aero enabled, Greg. Aero is the default Vista and Win7 UI. When we say enable Aero, we mean unload WB which gives you bare bones Aero.

@Uvah Aero Colors and Aero clay are not WB skins.....they are Aero with texture and color applied. Aero Frost IS though.......and I get the text on the searchbox no matter what skin is applied (and of course with none applied)

I will say it again.......This is not connected to Windowblinds (which is why I put this thread in the Windows 7 section) B)

just went to wikipedia and found that my graphics emulate their discription also, thanks.

so, I get the text with an aero skin but not with any other. both venture and midas do NOT have the text on my machine. I have SP1.

This is really weird and I get it with everything even Venture. Started somewhere around the date of this thread so  don't know if it was a WB or windows update but it was before I installed SP1. I keep checking this thread looking for a post that someone has figured it out but no luck yet and have tried all I know how to do. Actually I was hoping that one of the great Stardock Tecs would have been looking around with this problem and had an answer that is was a Microsoft thing or their updater thing even if they  don't or just can't have a fix would be nice to know at least what caused it.

Figure it out this way everyone, Stardock would have absolutely no reason to add text to the search box... none... notta... zip..., so I guess that gives you the answer. :)

That's the whole thing. Some of us have it on all skins, some of us don't. Its definitely on Aero skins though and since aero is microstuff and since some had it before SP1 then probably one of the updates prior to SP1 and nothing to do with StarDock e.g. Windowblinds. Maybe the only way to be rid of it or at least find the cause would be to uninstall the updates one by one and see.

I am going to re-iterate. The text appeared after Impulse and Stardock updates. It did not come from a Windows update.

I can't say for sure what triggered mine but I do know that it happened within the last week and I have not even opened impulse for about a month. That makes me think it happened after a Microsoft update because I recently installed new updates. I am running 7600 build 64bit and I have not installed service pack 1 yet.

I have complete control over my Windows updates and install them at my convenience and not MS'S. There were no Windows updates installed on the day the text appeared, Just the updates through Impulse.
