Elemental 101

Howdy folks. I’m DivineWrath. Some of you might remember me as the guy who wrote the TA 101 for GalCiv 2. Now, I’m writing up this guide for Elemental. Hopefully this will answer questions that might otherwise be asked a 100 times elsewhere.

Let me be clear. This guide’s only concern is to inform new players (or confused beta testers) as to how to get started when playing the game, and try to answer questions regarding basic game play. This guide will not cover advanced strategies, or try to examine game mechanics to determine the game works in fine detail.

If you have a question that isn't covered in this guide, feel free to post a reply (and I'll try to answer it if its on topic).

QA (questions & answers)

Q: What is Elemental - War of Magic?

A: Elemental plays like a civilization game (most of you should know what I’m talking about), except it’s a fantasy game (instead of alternate history), and with magic. You, the sovereign, are the one of few people able to restore life to the land, and you get your own cool little chess piece on the map. You can move your sovereign around and do things like cast spells, and you can even fight in battles against your enemies. Depending on the victory conditions, you may need to do quests to find mighty artifacts, learn the spell of mastery, or even bash in the heads of your enemies till they stop moving.

But beware, there be Dragons.

Q: The game sounds cool and all, but where do I get it?

A: The game can be bought using Impulse, or at www.impulsedriven.com . Alternatively, you could buy a copy at your local game store.

Q: What should I do once I start playing?

A: First thing you probably need to do is, to found your kingdom (build your first settlement). Your sovereign can make the first settlement free of charge. Try to build it next to a fertile piece of land (it’s a special tile).

From there, you will want to build a school (to do research), build a market (to make money), and build a workshop (to make materials needed to build early structures, and train early units). From there, you should probably try to train a few scouts (to explore), build a few huts (to raise the city population limit, and have it level up), and build a farm or two (so you have the food to build the huts). The rest... well, you can decide that.

Q: Help! How do I build a farm (or use other special tiles)?

A: How you build farms has changed in the release version (for those of you who beta tested the game). You now must select the resource in the main map (outside of town construction), and select the option to build a farm on the fertile soil.

Q: How do I give my one of my champions the ability to cast spells?

A: There is a spell called “Imbue Champion”. You must research it before you can cast it. Depending on the spell books you have, you might not have the ability to research it. When you have learnt the spell, you may cast it on a champion to give it the ability to cast spell. When you do so, you will transfer some of your sovereign’s essence to the champion.

Q: Why did my sovereign lose essence?

A: There are a few things in the game that might cost your sovereign essence. Casting the spell “Imbue Champion” costs essence. If your sovereign falls in battle, it might spend some essence to try to escape (doesn’t always work depending on the circumstances). The game should warn you before you do something that will cost essence.

--Update: 2010_08_25--

Q: How do I do higher level quests, or explore high objects on the map?

A: You need a high “Notable Location Level” to explore such areas. Unfortunately, the techs you need to research in order to increase you level are not currently labeled. I suggest you research “Quests” in the adventure section, and research each tech unlocked in the line up. You should be able to increase you “Notable Location Level” from there.

Q: How do I buy new equipment for my sovereign (or champions)?

A: You can buy new equipment for you sovereign if the said unit is within your area of influence. To the bottom left of your screen, you should see a tab called actions. One of the icons should say something like “visit item shop”. From there, you can buy items for your sovereign.

Q: I got some cool stuff for my sovereign (or champion), but how do I equip it?

A: Select the sovereign. There on the UI, you should see a button with a sword and shield on it (it should be right next to the hit points, or HP). Once there, you should be able to select what equipment your sovereign will use. Please note that some items are sloted and therefore you are limited in the number of items you can use.

Q: How do I use caravans?

A: First you need the tech. Research “Trading” from the diplomacy section on the tech tree. From there, train a caravan. Once done, order it to move another settlement (either one you own, or one belonging to another civ). They also build roads roads along the trade route (which allows units to travel faster between the 2 points).

Q: How do I recruit NPCs?

A: Various NPCs can be recruited as your champions. To do so, you ussually need the money to “persuade them” to join your cause. Janusk (the early advisor you can recruit), is a rare exception as he probably hasn’t realized the other champions got paid.

Q: How do I build ships/docks?

A: Ship docks can only be built along the shore line. Most of the land mass near the shore line are cliffs, ill suited for docks. As such, you may need to look around for a beach or something. Once the dock is built, you can build ships the same way you would train another unit.

Thats it for now. If any of you have any questions, feel free to post a reply, and I’ll try to find an answer for it in (unless I feel its off topic).

Nice start.

One question I have that has been bugging me for the past 2 days. How exactly do you raise your notable location level (I have mainly found that treasure chests require this)? I know you research Adventuring tree but what techs should you focus on unlocking to level it up?

Try the adventure part of the tech tree. From there, try researching "Quests" and the techs unlocked by it. It seems that every second tech in the line up increases your "Notable Location" rank by 1.

I need to go do some checking into the matter.

We found Janusk's replacement! :D k2

I'm not sure that's true.  As with a lot of the game, this is one of those WTF mechanics.  I was researching adventure last night trying to boost this and got my army/sov up to 3 but after a brutal loss of my army my notable level dropped back down to 2.  So...I think there's more to it than just adventure tech.  And trust me, you wanna have some beefy troops before you start messing with those higher level notables.  The difficulty ramps up at an alarming rate.  Random encounters in general seem to go from being a joke to being ridiculous in no time if you pump up adventure tech.

I would change the building farm answer to clearly say you have to click on the fertile soil and then select build farm. Clicking on the city itself won't bring up the build farm icon.

What do the red and blue dots next to your units in the left-hand column along the edge of the screen mean?

*fixed* I replaced town with resource.

Anyways, I'm going to do another update tomorrow. I'm just waiting for the questions to pile up. We should also have an update by then too.

A good question to include is how to buy the first weapon / gear for your Sovereign.  It took me a bit to figure that out the first time (although Frogboy explains that nicely in the tutorial videos).

Yeah, it took me ages to figure out how to equip a purchased item.

That button doesn't look like a button.

Poor UI choice.

What do the red and blue dots next to your units in the left-hand column along the edge of the screen mean?

They're the buildings. Red indicates one under construction, blue is built. Not quite sure why it's necessary tbh.

Oh, and a couple more FAQ's:

1. Why can't I talk to an NPC?

If you see a speech bubble with a red line through it the usual cause is that they're either out of your influence and you have no units adjacent, or you don't have enough gildar on hand to recruit them. You can check by selecting the NPC, going to the action tab and hovering over the greyed out handshake icon. The tooltip will tell you why you can't communicate

2. How do I equip my heroes?

You can access a store from anywhere within your influence (the area within the borders on the map) which allows you to purchase any equipment you have the tech researched for (and it ignores resource requirements). You can also find equipment as loot, as a quest reward or from the goodie huts. To equip a character, select them (so their portrait is in the centre bottom of the screen) and click the shield icon on the right. This will bring up the equipment window showing you what they're carrying; items in a coloured block are currently equipped.

You can also trade between NPC's in the same tile by going into their action tab and clicking the trade icon (the scales). This brings up a window allowing you to move items between the units in the square

3. How do I level up a town? / Why won't my town level up (minors)

The level of a settlement depends on it's population. If you select a settlement you will see a bar in the bottom left with a house icon in it. This shows you the current population and the limit from the current housing in the town. Hovering over it will give you the exact numbers.

Minors (the one town empires) will never level up no matter how much housing you build. The only benefit to conquering their cities is that they usually have a key resource nearby to exploit, particularly the non-human recruit locations.

4. How do I recruit ships/spiders/etc

Once you have the relevant building click on the associated town and you should see the unit available in the train menu. Only towns who have a necessary site linked can build these units, and you can't design them.

5. What are caravans for?

Caravans allow you to trade between your own settlements, which generates extra gildar and food. To use, simply train a caravan at one town and move it to another - a road will form and traders will begin to move along it. Selecting one of these traders will show you what they are boosting in their unit info. Note caravans can be destroyed if these traders are ambushed, the road however stays.

6. My sovereign ages far slower than their children

Your sovereign has the benefit of magic running through their veins which allows them to prolong their life. It also means you get to use your children as heroes within a reasonable time frame.

7. Can I raze cities?

Yes, but only once you've researched the necessary technology (it's in the warfare tree on the siege branch)

8. How does this tech thing work anyway?

Rather than research specific techs, you research into a single school. Once you have accumulated enough research points for a breakthrough you may then select a technology which is immediately unlocked. When you select a school on the tech window you can see the potential technologies you will have to choose from in the pane next to the description, as well as the likelihood that you will be offered them with your next breakthrough.

yay! divinewrath to the rescue.  So do you need help tracking down questions :D

More questions to add

Q: What determine the number of enchantment slots your casters have (as in Enchanted Weapon and Enchanted Armor spells).

Q: Does the Brilliance, Nature Bounty, Defiance, and other city enhancement spell take slots (as in question above).

Q: How do I upgrade a unit (after deigning the better version), if this is even possible.

Q: what can't I use the tile with the wolves/horses?

A: Depends on your faction (Kingdom/Empire) some resource tiles are not usable (Kingdom can use Horses, while Empire can use Wolves [Wargs])

Q: Why can't I cast enchanted Weapon or Enchanted Armor on my [unit name] unit?

A: This spells are self only (as in, only the caster can benefit from them).

My next update is going to be a little late. I'm kinda busy right now.

Q: How do I upgrade a unit (after deigning the better version), if this is even possible.

I think isn't possible...like in GalCiv2 we have upgrade all of this type but I think all you can do is disband whatever obsolete units you have.  The are absorbed back into the nearest city and added to population (or so the popup says).

Guide updated. The new stuff starts after the old stuff ends.

So do you need help tracking down questions

Sure. I'm a bit busy as of late, but bring the questions and I'll see what I can do.
