Problem (SOLVED) accessing DesktopX Sidebar-framework

Windows 7 64 bit....

Hey guys, anyone know why I get this error when trying to run a DesktopX made windows sidebar gadget on 64 bit 7?

"Problem accessing DesktopX Sidebar-framework"  and it says to click here but it leads to a blank site that never loads.

Ones I made run on the 32 bit win 7, but not on 64 bit. :annoyed:

SOLVED:

Thanks to JuniorCrooks for leading me to the fix for this error.

For those of you having trouble with DX made sidebar gadgets on 64 bit, here is the fix.

Go to your Program Files x64 and make a backup copy of your sidebar.exe file. Go to the Program Files x86 sidebar gadget folder and copy the sidebar.exe, take it and paste it into the 64 bit sidebar folder, . Now you can run DX made sidebar gadgets!

Thanks Junior!!!!!!

Do you get this for all Sidebar gadgets?  do they all work on 7 32 bit?  Link for one to test with?

Only on 64 bit, and only on sidebar gadgets I made with DX. I am told that Essorants recent ones do it too. I googled it and others have this problem. And the link in the error leads to nowhere.

Below are a few. BTW, Shirley, you look better all the time!!   I still like the guy in the dress tho.....:-"

Shirley, Stardock Support said this in an email:

Hello,

The reason you are getting that error is that Windows 7 does not have a sidebar. That gadget will only work in Windows Vista.

Please let us know if you should have any further questions/concerns.

Windows 7 does have a sidebar but it is turned off by default, you would need to go into programs in the control panel, select turn windows features on or off and then select Windows Gadget Platform to turn it on.

I think what you have discovered is that desktopx was never designed for use on 64bit systems, as xp 64 was not widely distributed and as desktopx didn't get any development for vista afaik they never put 64bit compatibility in

Actually, all you have to do is run a gadget, then if you look in task manager, you'll see sidebar.exe is running. 7 has no sidebar, just a sidebar runtime.

I understand that the DesktopX sidebar framework is 32 bit only.  Which is why it is not working for you on 64 bit.

Is there any chance this will be fixed in  the DX 4.0 final version?

Like many of the ODNT apps, DX seems to be built for 32bit XP. DX 3.XX may have worked fine on XP (I wouldn't know, I never used XP);P   but technology has moved on.  64 bit OS's are far from new and I think it's safe to say that 64 bit multi-core machines with over 2GB RAM will be around for awhile. It would be fantastic it DX could be used to its full potential with them. In fact, it would be great if all Stardock software actually worked properly with them. Rather than new features being added, I'd like to see updates that truly modernize the software.

In my humble opinion, WindowBlinds, DeskScapes and Fences are the only real "Jewels" left in the Stardock crown. Everything else in ODNT needs a load of polishing before they shine again.

From what I've seen Stardock has been incredibly lazy doing anything with 64-bit.  I found this thread because I was having the same issue, but it looks by reading through the responses that the problem isn't going to be fixed.  What I'd really like to know is why, if people can use Desktop X to make Windows gadgets, does it not save them in the effing Windows gadget format instead of forcing reliance on Desktop X?  Grr.

I wonder why SD is so behind with 64bit apps wit the the CEO all praising new technology at every occasion...

WORD. But I am sure the next game or any game update will prevent the polish.
