Starfist - The Stardock Forums Succession Fort

The title says it all.

We, here at the Stardock forums, will be playing at least 1 game, of succession Dwarf Fortress.

CURRENT TURN: Iteuniso

This list is currently a meager five people:

Bill_Door

Iteuniso

Myles

Pbhead

Myself/Orvidos

Anyone that has played Dwarf Fortress and would like to join, is absolutely welcome. (I only have 3 forts under my belt anyway, so I doubt we'll be using my saves much.)

We'll be using this seed for our first outing:

Typical succession rules, which are as follows:

Each person plays 1 year, 1 year only. When spring rolls around, they save it, zip it and send it on its way.

No intentional fortress disastering.

If someone utterly murders the fortress, the last playable save will be used.

No time limit on taking your turn, this time around.

Bill will be starting, whenever he damn well pleases (soon, I imagine, if Beta 2 isn't released today). We'll go from there.

Again, if you're interested, say so, we'll add you to the list.

Oh and Bill? I propose Starfisted for our fort name.

Let the fun begin!

Okay, any suggestions for a starting build?  I'm not very good at choosing them.

I'll use my best judgement if I have to, but we may regret it.:P

Here's a copy of my notes for the map:

It has an aquifer, but you can easily pierce it by going under the ocean, the land is untamed wilds, the ocean is joyous wilds, so there's a chance for merpeople; it also has sparse trees and moderate vegetation.  Obviously it has salt water, so we'd have to make sure not to run out of booze, and eventually construct a purifier.  115 z-levels deep too!

Starfisted sounds fine, any one want to choose a group name?

BTW, I'll be using 31.06, but we'll change with each new patch.

It took Toady 8 years to get what we have now, and he's nowhere near done.  Even with a proper team, making Dwarf Fortress with a good UI and graphics would take at least 5 years, probably 10+.  And things like Forgotten Beasts and Titans would not be feasable with real graphics.  Plus it would be rated the one above M, I think it's Ao (Adults Only), so noone would carry it, the gore would be insane.

Have you tried Mayday's Graphical pack ? It can be useful if you are planning to make AAR. Even non-player can easily understand what's going on.

I'm using it. And will have it for my AAR screenshots.

I'm aware of graphic sets, but honestly I prefer the good, old, ASCII.  Of course, if anyone else want to use them, that's fine, but I'll stick to the ASCII.:)

I wanted to get going as fast as I can. I'm reading a bunch of old succession forts AAR threads and puzzling out the ASCII. I'll likely strip the tileset once I feel comfortable reading the screen at a glance.

Well, anyone want a dwarf?  Just say what name you want, and a custom profession if you please.

Just don't complain when you die a horrible, bloody death.:P

Edit: Well, it won't let me choose Starfisted, would Starfist be fine?  Or Starfists?

Starfist is great.

Also, anyone that bothers to read this and isn't playing; If you'd like to die horribly in Starfist, speak up. We'll draft you as quick as we can.

Group name anyone?  Or will I have to make that up too?

And do you want a dwarf, Orvidos?

Trust me, it's much funnier when people on the forums are getting brutally mudered, rather than some random dwarf.

Considering I loaded the game, sat through the generation phase and then had that standard     ....  WHAT?   .... moment, and that was as far as I got, I hereby propose for the slaughtering:

Sir Puffypants

Its no wonder everyone can't wait to get him killed.

Orvidos, profession non-important. Though being an eventual militia dwarf and either butchering my way through half the scenario, of being reincarnated and rebutchered every time immigrants came through. . .

Yeah; Orvidos, w/e, militia to be sacrificed for great glory whenever possible

As for a group name, people are welcome to give ideas, or vote on one of these. (Or you can haul off and pick one/make whatever you like)

- The Anvil of Mastadon

- The Jumanji Guild

- (The) Bombastic Bakers

If none of those quite click, make your own Bill.

Ohp. The other three of you playing, would you care to doing a IC AAR with continuity, or otherwise?

I like The Anvil of Autumn, I think I'll name it that.

If nobody has any complaints with the Starting Build, I'll get started then.  Don't worry though, I can still change Dwarves' names.

I like the name.

Mmm, I don't see anything wrong with your embarkation package, but keep in mind I say this from the stage of noobs

(I like that I'm the woodcutter in a nigh-treeless hellhole. Should be fun. [Yes, I damn well stole that.])

It's been a little while since I played DF(since right after the release of DF2010) but I'd love to get in on this. I'm not really that good, but I understand enough to not get us killed unless a ridiculous raid or monster shows up. Then I'll make sure we die a horrendously funny death that emanates fun.

Anyone else see anything wrong?  It's kinda getting late here, and I'd rather not wait until this morning.

Lol @ woodcutter, I'll send you to cut trees near enemies so you can kill them with your axe when they attack you.*_*

I don't think any of us are particularly good.  BTW if a invincibeast shows up, the best way to kill it is an engineered cave-in = guarenteed kill.

BTW, want a dwarf?

Edit: OK, I'm starting, if I messed something up, it'll be all the more Fun.  Don't expect me to finish before tomorrow though.

Sucky players in a moderately dangerous environ just means more Fun.

Myles, I added you to the list in front of me. I had to stop myself from penciling you in as Monty because I forgot your name when I went to edit, despite loving your posts.

Bill, strike the earth, and godsspeed.

Good luck to you! And may your Fun come in packages big enough to be crazy and small enough for it to result in epic tales!

As am I. If you'd like to set up before or after me, let me know. It'll likely be long enough into the game and stable enough that you can at least run it and keep everyone/most people alive, provided you aren't on the brink of a tantrum spiral or something from my/Myles save.
