Dawn of Victory is a modification currently in development for the RTS/4X game; Sins of a Solar Empire. It is a “total conversion” replacing the games original models, textures, UI elements, and gameplay to create an entirely new and original experience.

It is our goal with Dawn of Victory to “maintain depth, but shift focus”, taking the things that made Sins of a Solar Empire a truly enjoyable game, and apply them to a different set of rules.

Above all, the team behind Dawn of Victory is committed to only releasing a product we can be proud of. While we pride ourselves on the quality of our art assets and aesthetics changes, we hope the true value of our mod is the unique and engaging gameplay.

The storyline behind Dawn of Victory was originally little more than an excuse to create what we thought would be a unique and fantastic backdrop for the game. Loosely based on the “WorldWar” series of books by Harry Turtledove, we wanted to take the atmosphere that made World War II games so compelling, and transport it into a space opera setting.

Over time however, our backstory has grown into an expansive universe, spanning over 300 years of alternate history. Our community driven wiki, dedicated to the story behind the mod has grown to over 500 pages, with hundreds of individual contributors.

  • New Ship Classes: Corvettes, interceptors, and more.
  • Redesigned Combat Model: Small caliber weapons may be effective against strike craft and frigates, but against heavy armor they won't make a dent.
  • Original Art Assets: Different factions have unique architectural styles and approaches to ship design. All assets have been created expressly for the mod.
  • Enhanced Ship Customization: Mount different equipment on your ships to achieve greater tactical flexibility.
  • New Doctrine Trees: Specialize your faction's approach to combat and more through purchasing unique abilities and bonuses.
  • Redesigned User Interface: The game's interface has been reimagined to fit both the style and gameplay changes inherent to Dawn of Victory.

The Soviet Union relies on overwhelming firepower rather than subtlety to achieve victory. Soviet frigates and cruisers are well rounded and cost effective, but the true strength of the Red Fleet lies in its capital ships. The Soviet economy is vulnerable however, and must be protected until it is in a position to dominate.

Kriegsmarine corvettes and frigates are the mainstay of German strategy. When properly deployed they can harass and intercept enemy units before escaping serious retribution. By denying their opponents the room to expand, the Greater German Reich can force their enemies into a vulnerable position before delivering the final blow with cruisers and capital ships.

The Democratic Federation combines the best elements of the American, Andrean, British and French fleets. Large numbers of specialized ships are available, and when properly coordinated, become effective against nearly every threat.

Applicants would ideally be familiar with UV mapping, and be proficient at recognizing existing unit styles and applying them faithfully either from a concept or working with a group to come up with a design. Models typically range from 1k to 6k polies. Each unit mesh will have only only one UV channel, as the engine limits us to one texture per mesh.

Applicants should be familiar with normal and specular maps and have a commitment to detail. The art direction of the mod calls for mostly realistic texturing with some room for stylistic exaggerations; experience with generating "greeble" and weathering are a must. Texture resolutions range from 1024 square to 4096 square.

The losses Red Army divisions have taken on Vega in the recent weeks have been atrocious, greater coordination is needed between the Red Army and Red Fleet if we are going to successfully defeat the Wehrmacht. The fighting around the capital alone has claimed over 30,000 casualties in the past 4 days and the superiority of Reich terrestrial air forces at this stage has pretty much crippled the Weimar Volksluftkommando for the foreseeable future.

If you could see fit to transfer 14-18 squadrons of interceptor spacecraft to my command, I am confident we can begin to dent Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine air reserves on Vega and force them to either withdrawal to better defended sectors on the planet, or increase the number of reinforcements sent to the combat area. Either action would leave them in an unfavourable situation compared to our Army and Navy respectively.

This is of course time sensitive, our drive into the capital has devolved into intense city fighting, and the possibility of a counter attack on our flanks is very high. Should the Italians attempt to push through the 88th Army, we will be forced to resort to orbital bombardment to contain them. I have no concern as to the environmental effects of this, but many of our reserves are still being equipped with CBRN equipment and would be unable to operate in the affected area.

I have of course forwarded a copy of my recommendations to STAVKA but your support on this would help expedite matters. I thank you for your assistance and cooperation in this glorious campaign so far, and must extend my congratulations on the destruction of the Scharnhorst, it made quite a sight down here as it broke up in the atmosphere.

Comrade General,

By now you have no doubt been briefed by STAVKA and are aware of the greater offensive plans regarding our operations within the Vega Subsector. I regret not informing you earlier but the fluid nature of the front prevented us from informing Red Army commanders until the operation had been locked down.

Military Sector Space Command has confirmed that 2 battlegroups of the 3rd Feet numbering at roughly 700 combat vessels have just arrived within the Vega Subsector. Included in this group are 50 squadrons of both atmospheric and orbital strikecraft which will be assigned to the Red Air Force to act in conjunction with your ground forces on Vega. You will receive further notifications from STAVKA regarding the exact nature of these forces over the coming days.

Now, if I may speak to you as a friend rather than fellow officer, I trust you will know to keep the following information to yourself. Premier Sokolovsky is committed to breaking the back of the German Armed Forces and using a victory at Vega to “shine as a beacon to the Orion Arm”. He intends to concentrate such an overwhelming force at Vega that the Germans will be left with only 2 options.

The first possibility is that the Reich will launch a decisive counter attack on Orson or Galleria against our own strained forces there, so as to score a propaganda and military victory with their citizens, and then agree to some sort of a ceasefire under various terms to make it seem that this war has left the Greater German Reich in a much better strategic position.

The second possibility, and one that I and the Premier consider much more likely, is that the Greater German Reich will expand this conflict to one of total war. Until now both sides have been content to confine this struggle to the border worlds and Vega, should the Germans choose this second option we could see fighting expand to include Juno, Outreach, and even Soviet and German systems.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Soviet Armed Forces will win this conflict, and it is only a matter of time before the Germans are forced to the bargaining table. However I also have no illusions as to the losses we will take before we get there. If the Germans act as the Premier and I expect they will, things will get much worse for you on Vega before they get better.

Been following this ever since I saw the concept back in the early days of Sins, it continues to look absolutely fantastic. Drool-inducing, even. The amount of work that's been put into DoV is mind-boggling. Looking forward to release, whenever that may be! I wish I had useful skills to offer, but unfortunately, about all I've got is a big thank you to the team for working on this! The unwashed masses await your magnum opus with great anticipation!

For those of you who don’t follow us on ModDB (a plague on your house), you may not have seen some of the latest updates detailing the changes we’ve made to the user interface of Sins, both ingame and in the menu screens.

Planet, Ship, and Structure Icons

Dawn of Victory replaces the standard icons used to represent ingame objects and replaces them with a series of symbols and modifiers that have been designed to be easily recognizable and memorized. Colonisable planets for example are represented by circles, un-colonisable by diamonds, while planets without any reconnaissance show up as triangles. This allows the player to quickly discern the most logical places for expansion.

Ship icons use a similar system, triangles for corvettes, squares for axillary ships, rectangles for frigates, and so on. Each of course has a modifier so the player can quickly tell his ships apart.

Menu Screens

The Sins of a Solar Empire menu screens, while iconic and very user friendly, didn’t fit the tone of Dawn of Victory. Rather than just due a quick hue/saturation pass, we decided to rebuild them from scratch and include some new features to immerse players in the Dawn of Victory universe.

Loading Screens

You can only stare at a piece of concept art and some weirdo standing next to it for so long. Once again we redesigned our loading screens from the ground up, turning them into News Networks from the Dawn of Victory Universe. The example below is a mostly unbiased look from the BBC, but Soviet and German propaganda networks, as well as a variety of other networks will included, giving players various viewpoints into the current affairs of the Orion Arm.

Once our campaign is up and running, these loading screens will be updated to include reports on player driven events that have occurred.

Indeed, there are a lot of possibilities there, the fact that you gave someone an idea is a good thing. Makes them strive for their own unique creation. People get ideas from other ideas all the time and mold it to their own form of an idea, that's the great thing about the human mind. Of course this is just the positive outlook on such a subject, rather not go into the negative side as that would ruin the mood of this thread ;)

I won't be copying anything you've done, key word was inspiration. I've been working on my own UI changes with a bent towards my plague race, just nice to see how others have changed the UI like DOV, SOA2 and Stargate...

I figured as much, but the first part was light sarcasm afterall, and I was only giving a little light back... But apparently my smiley didn't work so you might need another tactic. :S

Also for some reason... I was just thinking when I read that, hey Swiss Knight never came in with a few quips on my mod, so I was feeling a little left out until now. O:)  (my own sarcastic bent unfortunately)

My other response was just a matter of fact, I have no intention to copy your look and feel. But it was interesting to see how you've modified it.
