Sorry guys, there will be a beta 1z3

Sorry guys, there will be a beta 1z3

Before people groan, progress on Elemental continues across the board besides just the “game” aspect (if there are any developers reading this feel free to explain to non-developers what I mean).

Anyway, Beta 1Z2 that went up yesterday is much better than Z1 was in terms of stability and such but it’s not quite there yet.

Namely, the stuck turns and saved games need to be addressed more.  There are still reports of crashes but memory and stability seem to be adequate to proceed.

I don’t have an exact date of z3 yet but hopefully in the next week or so.

Sorry to be such a stickler here. We’re not trying to be perfectionists. We just want to make sure we produce the best possible game we can.

One other thing to note: Be wary about getting invested in the gameplay. There are already debates on various balance things. While the underpinnings are there, we expect to make a lot of radical changes between now and release.  So if you’re having fun with the beta, please don’t get too attached to anything.

How are you progressing on the single player campaign? I don't know that you would have enough time to get it in gear and get it finished by september, as the basic mechanics aren't all there yet.

I don't mean this as a criticism. Maybe you have something in mind, or have already prototyped the quest line and have it shovel ready.

Going to a Beta 1ZZZZ1 is fine with me if we get all of the random crashes, stuck turns, and glitches taken care of.

:)  Well, perfect stability and such isn't a prerequisite. Just a reasonable level. I think the next build will do it.

i don't care how long you guys take to make this just as long as you don't cut corners.

It's good to hear. I was expressing my wish for a 1Z3 last night, after 1Z2 crashed on me. So I was happy to read this newest Journal posting, that it will actually happend. Even thought I've noticed quite a few changes for the good. Good job guys! Looking forward to the next edition of the Z beta.

It's cool that you can finally start a new game within the game. And I also like the fact that you can leave the town and get to the tile you wanted to go to. In 1Z1, my sovereign got stuck in between a mountain range and the city.

I'm sure we have so far just gotten a tiny little taste of what Elemental is through the beta. But there is so many features that is not implemented yet. I am looking forward to the battle tactics part of the game, and also the editor and all that. But that will be closer towards beta 4 and 5 i think...

No I agree, no need to apologise. This is great news.

What fool actually wants to go to the next stage packing stability problems?

I'm really not very surprised.  I for one actually had less stability between z1 and z2.

I have to agree here. In 1z1, I only had issues with out of memory and that was after hours of game play ... er .. testing. But now, I tried an hour of playing and ended up with about 10 stuck "end of turn" issues where I had to try saving, exiting, starting it again, and loading. And I've manage to get two save files now that just won't load on different games. And trying to make a new game from within a game after a stuck turn button was crashing out for me. Discovering housing locked the game completely in my last game (I had a lot of huts to upgrade in about 6 cities by that point). So, general playability dropped considerably between 1z1 and 1z2 for me. I am not even testing road building anymore, just because of how buggy it has been in the past (and because it is going to get replaced anyway).

Hopefully whatever changes you make will actually allow me to play the game.  (It will be nice ot actually see all the features that everyone else is talking about here.)

You'll need to work with us then.  If it's crashing before you load the game, you need to talk to us and give us mroe details.

The crash descriptions are already in the beta forums.  (At the moment, the menu is loading o.k., but attempting to click anything in it causes the thing to crash, including the new game button.)

What a lot of people probably won't realize is that what seems like one bug can actually be multiple bugs all appearing to be one thing. So people should report their version of a bug regardless if it looks like the same bug has already been reported.

This is the right call, save games need to be solid before moving on.

And once you get this down, you can add an autosave, which will greatly diminish the damage done by the inevitable crashing that will continue as long as new lines of code are added.

If I could just re-load after a crash, I might be able to play past turn 10. Then I can hope to contribute to the discussion of the game's progress.

EDIT: Heey, someone snuck an autosave feature in there and it appears to be working! Now I have nothing to complain about.

I fully support this; I'm not having as many crashes as I did in earlier betas, but I agree that it's important to get the game stable before moving on.

It should be close to perfect at least...we're going to test multiplayer in BETA2 afterall...If the game locks-up occasionally, it will be impossible to complete a multiplayer match. I am going to test 0.3 again today, maybe I will find more lock-up related problems...even tho in my current game I am at around turn 300 against 3 computer oppoments, and no lock-ups or CTDs so far. I am happy about this. :)

Great decision and one more devs/publishers should follow. The only players who would be angry by the decision are those that don't have the games' best interest at heart. The rest want this to be our 'baby' as much as it is Brad's. Get it right and make this a game to be proud of!

"The crash descriptions"=a thread I started, if that's what you were referring to.  (It hasn't gotten many replies apart from me posting the files, so I'm not sure at all what might be going on.)

I don't understand why you are apologizing.  Who cares if people have to wait.  It's YOUR game.  Take your time and make it right.  Stop apologizing.

That depends on just how multiplayer matches are handled.  If the server is the official arbiter of the current state and there's a way to rejoin the game, you should be able to keep playing as long as the server stays up.  On the other hand, if it's a peer-to-peer thing with shared state like Demigod ... tough luck.  My impression is that it was the former (which is how other multiplayer TBS games I've played work)...having some bugs in the client might even be good, since then they can test whether the server is robust in the face of random disconnects and client crashes :-).

I hope you guys have some sort of test suite so we only get to experience new and exciting bugs, not the same boring old ones from the last build. ;-)

Auto save is already in and on in the currently public build.

Hate to say this, but now that I've had a chance to test it out, 1Z2 crashes more than 1Z1 for me. Can't even get five turns into a game.

Also the movement stutter is back. I'm going to have to find some kind of screen capture software to record this one, it seems like very couple of patches this old issue comes back.

Whoop Whoop

Other publishers would have sold us a beta 1z2 as a full product and would have patched it ... or maybe not.

As long there is the stardoc policy there is hope for us gamers :)
