Elemental: State of the Beta

Thoughts and feelings on where we are

I want to know how everyone feels about the Beta right now, as compared to past builds, and as compared to your hopes for future builds and the retail game.

My questions (And my own answers,) are as follows:

How has the stability of the current build [1Z2/.30] gotten better or worse for you?

1Z was the first build I got to play, and I noticed the stability wasn't great, but not terrible either.  Now, two patches later, I can easily play 800+ turns before any Crashes, and I'm finally able to load about 1/3 games, instead of just plain 0.  This is a vast improvement over the 100-200 turns I could've played before.

How do you like the gameplay, in all its facets, so far?

So far, I love it, even though there isn't much to do yet.  It's got the promise of being a very enthralling game.

How do you like the graphics, what little there are, and what are you most excited for regarding the graphics?

The graphics give me issues, as there are still lots of bugs in there, and I'm a freak for consistency when it comes to that kind of thing.  I'm most excited for the graphics engine as a whole though, particularly seeing the overland map for the first time with the Engine flipped on...  Yum.  ^^

How 'Into' the game do you get?  How much does the current build drag you in and 'Addict' you, or not?

I can't help but play at least a few games every day.  It's frustrating to not be able to finish a game, even when I'm trying, but learning the game, playing it, are still fun-ish experiences.

What things are you most excited for in the near future of the Beta?  Further down the road?  Just prior to, or right after, the retail release?

Stability and Multiplayer for the near future.  Further down the road, graphics, tactical battles, and who knows what else.  We'll see what Stardock adds and removes.  For release, playing long, drawn-out, roleplaying scenarios with my friend.  Elemental seems like something that will lend itself EXTREMELY well to a roleplaying environment.

How does Elemental stack up to what you would consider to be its 'peers'?

MoO, AoW, GalCiv, and Civilization to a lesser extent...  So far, I'd say it's measuring up admirably.  Technology plays its part of course, but those games had character, and lots of it.  Elemental, at least in my eyes, is showing that it could have plenty of character, possibly even rivaling games to follow in its footsteps for many years.

What things about the current build would you see removed/implemented in future builds that isn't already planned, and what could (Or may need) to be improved?

Personally, I've come to hate Trolls...  I would love to see Trolls go away, at least for a long time here...  I'd really love to see some way to curb Multiplayer Boredom put in, and I think the combat, as it currently stands, needs some improvement.  Seems to get mucked up a little too much.  Also, more rivers and functionality for them.  Like, Water-Mills, River-side ambushes, something to make Rivers more than just map flavor.

And lastly,

What Mods will you be most excited to build/play, and how do you think E:WoM's modding will stack up to other games, particularly those that are also highly moddable?

A Fall From Heaven Mod for playing, of course.

Also thinking about building a world I made using 3.5ed DnD as a base.  I think it would lend itself very well to Elemental's modding system, as well as allow me to create another side to the game I hadn't originally intended there to be.

How has the stability of the current build [1Z2/.30] gotten better or worse for you?

The first Beta Z was very stable for me. That changed with Beta 1Z1. It has got better, but I'm still crashing a lot.

How do you like the gameplay, in all its facets, so far?

I don't know if this question can be answered yet... there isn't that much gameplay to speak of. But I am liking the direction.

How do you like the graphics, what little there are, and what are you most excited for regarding the graphics?

I was very happy with the new face textures and models. They are really a dramatic improvement over the old ones. The graphics, in general, are something a skilled mod-maker could churn out, which isn't terrible considering how early we are. In any case, I would like to see more "flash". Maybe some bump mapping. Elemental is supposed to be a beautiful, stylistic game. We are definitely not there yet.

How 'Into' the game do you get? How much does the current build drag you in and 'Addict' you, or not?

I get a little frustrated with the game's instability and glitches, which prevents me from really enjoying it. I'm finding the most fun for me is designing and laying out the little cities. I've always been a sim city fan, so managing my cities to make them as big as possible is real visceral treat. I wish that enemies would stop declaring war on me so that I could continue happily building my city. I think I've always been a "simmer" at heart and I've always enjoyed what goes into building an army rather than using the armies themselves.

What things are you most excited for in the near future of the Beta? Further down the road? Just prior to, or right after, the retail release?

The modding tools, definitely.

What things about the current build would you see removed/implemented in future builds that isn't already planned, and what could (Or may need) to be improved?

The ability to purchase sovereign gear with gold rather than character points.

What Mods will you be most excited to build/play, and how do you think E:WoM's modding will stack up to other games, particularly those that are also highly moddable?

My own Dark Republic mod. I've been writing a lot of notes and drawing a lot of art, I've even been designing some of the buildings in Blender although nothing I want to show off at this point.

The ability to purchase sovereign gear with gold rather than character points.
Item Shops are working in the current internal build and they are REALLY cool. Right now cities just sell the items unlocks via techs, but it's a step in the right direction!

So is it like a HoMMIV thing where you buy potions/weps/armour etc via a shop?

Is it planned to be able to create artifacts/items/etc ?

(choosing a place : helmet, shield, armor, ring, etc. then modifiers/skills)

How has the stability of the current build [1Z2/.30] gotten better or worse for you?

I gotta test more, because I didn't had enough time to test yesterday. Reloading saved games is still problematic occasionally, and I had lock-ups as well.

How do you like the gameplay, in all its facets, so far?

It's allright, but lot of things must be improved in the next builds...but again, BETA 1 is a stability test, nothing else.

How do you like the graphics, what little there are, and what are you most excited for regarding the graphics?

You mean the cloth map + related stuff? It's ok. The models are looking good. [Sovereign + units]

How 'Into' the game do you get?  How much does the current build drag you in and 'Addict' you, or not?

I am just hunting for bugs. I don't care about the gameplay right now.

What things are you most excited for in the near future of the Beta?  Further down the road?  Just prior to, or right after, the retail release?

Tactical combat + Modding.

How does Elemental stack up to what you would consider to be its 'peers'?

Elemental will be a legendary game in the genre, which will be on my HDD for a very long time. I am pretty sure about this. :)

What things about the current build would you see removed/implemented in future builds that isn't already planned, and what could (Or may need) to be improved?

Couple of ideas:

- Regular units should gain XP.

- Equippable tamed beasts

- Mercenary system

- The ability to create/forge magical items

- Overland military buildings: Outposts, Fortresses etc.

What Mods will you be most excited to build/play, and how do you think E:WoM's modding will stack up to other games, particularly those that are also highly moddable?

1. Middle-earth / War of the ring mod

2. Hyborian mod

3. I plan to make a mod as well, which will be a "generic" fantasy mod with orcs, elves etc.

..as for the modding features: Basically you will be able to change everything. Like Froggie has said, you will be able to create an RPG game even.

Oh? That is good news. It's frustrating to choose between good traits and a sword... :(

I Like item shops..and the ability to enchant custom gear for the SOV and heroes.

*Couple of ideas:

Oh and for gods sakes Fix the stabality i hate the turn button greying out or crashes.

Thats my list of things for now.

None of the Beta Z versions have worked for me. They all crash after "creating world." The previous beta at least started fine.

I reported the issue here when 1Z first came out and I wonder if it is being looked at at all - https://forums.elementalgame.com/379829

Just a minor update from my side: No CTDs so far, after playing for like ~3 hours with the new version. Good job, team!

However, I am still having lot of lock-ups + reloading a saved game is still not working occasionally... [reported these of course]

Similar to the above, I haven't actually been able to get into a game for most of beta.  (I've only been able ot start 1-2 games.)

YES. Best part of Fall From Heaven (Civ4 Fantasy mod), any average swordsman who got lucky and survived enough battles could accumulate xp/promotions and become as powerful as a hero. And as cool as the game's heroes (analogous to Elemental's champions) were, somehow it was even cooler to see a red shirt ascend to heroic levels the hard way, by slaying dozens of orcs. Elemental needs to have this.

That being said, for balance (and micromanagement) reasons you don't want every peasant with a spear gaining too many levels, can you imagine picking stat increases for everyone in your 1000-man army? But it'd be incredible if every once in a while, a red shirt that got lucky and killed off several enemies without dying gained a level and became significantly more powerful, and a very few of these uber-red shirts survived long enough to get a third or fourth level. It turns massive army clashes into more than a game of numbers - gives you more personal involvement with your veteran troops.

Yeah, it makes little sense for regular units to not acquire experience. That way we can form "elite" companies of units later in the game to be used for extreme situations.

hmmm I would like some new races for creating a faction since making a human is boring all the time or better yet a "Create your own race" button would be the best and i would definatly love that so you could choose how they look like and stuff write the Lore about that race then make a faction write some Lore bout that then make a SOV write some Lore bout him(lol i love writing ive been writing "books" since i was 6 so i would love to writ A LOT of lore)

It's causing me horrible psychological damage.

Well, I just finished my first complete game in Beta 1Z. This time, I gave myself only one opponent and things worked fine. A quest area spawned on a island so you might want to check that out.

Still, I have a feeling a lot of stability issues could be fixed by going through the issues with pathing through cities. Right now entering and leaving cities is bizarre and hasn't really been fixed in any of the updates. It's like the computer isn't really sure what tile is occupied by city and which tile is not. In the cities I  conquered I had enemy peasants walking around atop them without really conquering the cities.

You can make custom races in the Beta. OK, you can't do much with them right now but the option exists.

Customization can be improved but it will be and its going to be awesome i'm gonna wait for empires to be enabled before bringing that up as a topic.

I'm pumped for Empires.  My first 'real' faction will be an Empire Faction, definitely.

I like all of what I'm hearing.  Keep flooding my inbox with those 'Replied to Topic' messages!

How has the stability of the current build [1Z2/.30] gotten better or worse for you?

I started with 1Z too. 1Z2 CTD are the most frequent I got up to now.

How do you like the gameplay, in all its facets, so far?

A game that as a lot of potential. It's tough not to like it already!

How do you like the graphics, what little there are, and what are you most excited for regarding the graphics?

I like the graphic style and the smoothness, even if there is lots of bugs with it. I suppose it's not the time to report those yet... I'm looking for the magic effects in tactical battle!

How 'Into' the game do you get?  How much does the current build drag you in and 'Addict' you, or not?

If there was not as many CTD, I would have a difficult time stop playing even if we only have one map to play with for now!

What things are you most excited for in the near future of the Beta?  Further down the road?  Just prior to, or right after, the retail release?

There is a lot of expectations ... the biggest one would be the tactical battles. Beta 4 is sooo far away he he.

How does Elemental stack up to what you would consider to be its 'peers'?

Elemental is really unique in is genre. I can't compare with anything else even if I've played MOO2, GalCiv, all the Civs, King's Bounty and more..

What things about the current build would you see removed/implemented in future builds that isn't already planned, and what could (Or may need) to be improved?

I like trolls, they some sense of danger around

I hope for zones of controls

What Mods will you be most excited to build/play, and how do you think E:WoM's modding will stack up to other games, particularly those that are also highly moddable?

Lord of the Rings.

I'm pumped for tactical battles. July you say? July? Well, if I have to wait till July for some proper Ass-kicking tactical battles, it will be well worth the wait.

I was able to play around 100 turns before but now with the newest update (downloaded a day or two ago) I can't play more that about 60 turns before a CTD.  Think I'm just going to wait until they get further along before I even boot it up again.

My questions (And my own answers,) are as follows:

Stability is a lot worse than previous incarnations. There has been a lot of variance but it has certainly been on the worse side.

How do you like the gameplay, in all its facets, so far?

Magic just doesn't have enough meat to it for me to really judge it. There are these shards and a mana pool, and....

Economy? Well Stardock has stuck its head in the sand regarding player input there. Reduced to a series of bar graphs is the opposite of how I'd want it to be.

How do you like the graphics, what little there are, and what are you most excited for regarding the graphics?

Graphics engine isn't here yet, but the art direction is excellent.

How 'Into' the game do you get?  How much does the current build drag you in and 'Addict' you, or not?

It doesn't. The only thing positive is that I've seen quests but they aren't even attempt-able without hacking my sovereign.

What things are you most excited for in the near future of the Beta?  Further down the road?  Just prior to, or right after, the retail release?

Graphics engine. I'm rather worried about the direction it is heading now since player input seems to becoming ignored on key basic issues.

How does Elemental stack up to what you would consider to be its 'peers'?

Too early to tell. This stage of beta isn't enough to make me delete MoM from my drive.

What things about the current build would you see removed/implemented in future builds that isn't already planned, and what could (Or may need) to be improved?

Dungeons.

Better questing

More robust diplomacy/trading and diplomacy AI

Revert from Global economy to focus on a trade system.

What Mods will you be most excited to build/play, and how do you think E:WoM's modding will stack up to other games, particularly those that are also highly moddable?

Local economy and whatever else Stardock decides we're too "stuck on" to appreciate.

Rishkith, you seriously need to get a grip. Stardock isn't ignoring input, they simply made a decision you dont like based on a wide variety on input. So stop the whining already.

Rishkith, seriously, if you put as much effort into complaining about the economy "issue" as you do into something productive, like designing a mod that makes the food local and explores all the trade aspects and logistics you want, we'd all be a lot better off.

Seriously I'd like to see a hyper-realistic sim-empire module that requires in depth management and encourages the use of a spreadsheet. I'm not being facetious at all, that would be really neat. Something along the the lines of Ceaser, empire-wide.

Who knows? Maybe your mod will be the most popular one. But don't become that guy who just hangs on some random forum, month after month, complaining about some slight that happened years ago. Be productive with your time.

Rishkith - I am a "local resources fan" as well, but I am not complaining, because the decision has been made. You should just move on as well....we gonna have a local resources eco mod anyways.

I'd pretty much guarantee the economy is going to change more. I don't think we've seen the economy in its final stage yet. Not by a long shot.
