Elemental: State of the Beta

Elemental: State of the Beta

Thoughts and feelings on where we are

I want to know how everyone feels about the Beta right now, as compared to past builds, and as compared to your hopes for future builds and the retail game.

My questions (And my own answers,) are as follows:

How has the stability of the current build [1Z2/.30] gotten better or worse for you?

1Z was the first build I got to play, and I noticed the stability wasn't great, but not terrible either.  Now, two patches later, I can easily play 800+ turns before any Crashes, and I'm finally able to load about 1/3 games, instead of just plain 0.  This is a vast improvement over the 100-200 turns I could've played before.

How do you like the gameplay, in all its facets, so far?

So far, I love it, even though there isn't much to do yet.  It's got the promise of being a very enthralling game.

How do you like the graphics, what little there are, and what are you most excited for regarding the graphics?

The graphics give me issues, as there are still lots of bugs in there, and I'm a freak for consistency when it comes to that kind of thing.  I'm most excited for the graphics engine as a whole though, particularly seeing the overland map for the first time with the Engine flipped on...  Yum.  ^^

How 'Into' the game do you get?  How much does the current build drag you in and 'Addict' you, or not?

I can't help but play at least a few games every day.  It's frustrating to not be able to finish a game, even when I'm trying, but learning the game, playing it, are still fun-ish experiences.

What things are you most excited for in the near future of the Beta?  Further down the road?  Just prior to, or right after, the retail release?

Stability and Multiplayer for the near future.  Further down the road, graphics, tactical battles, and who knows what else.  We'll see what Stardock adds and removes.  For release, playing long, drawn-out, roleplaying scenarios with my friend.  Elemental seems like something that will lend itself EXTREMELY well to a roleplaying environment.

How does Elemental stack up to what you would consider to be its 'peers'?

MoO, AoW, GalCiv, and Civilization to a lesser extent...  So far, I'd say it's measuring up admirably.  Technology plays its part of course, but those games had character, and lots of it.  Elemental, at least in my eyes, is showing that it could have plenty of character, possibly even rivaling games to follow in its footsteps for many years.

What things about the current build would you see removed/implemented in future builds that isn't already planned, and what could (Or may need) to be improved?

Personally, I've come to hate Trolls...  I would love to see Trolls go away, at least for a long time here...  I'd really love to see some way to curb Multiplayer Boredom put in, and I think the combat, as it currently stands, needs some improvement.  Seems to get mucked up a little too much.  Also, more rivers and functionality for them.  Like, Water-Mills, River-side ambushes, something to make Rivers more than just map flavor.

And lastly,

What Mods will you be most excited to build/play, and how do you think E:WoM's modding will stack up to other games, particularly those that are also highly moddable?

A Fall From Heaven Mod for playing, of course.

Also thinking about building a world I made using 3.5ed DnD as a base.  I think it would lend itself very well to Elemental's modding system, as well as allow me to create another side to the game I hadn't originally intended there to be.

Does anyone else see the title and think:

Elemental: State of the Union

or is it just me?

Rishkith - I am a "local resources fan" as well, but I am not complaining, because the decision has been made. You should just move on as well....we gonna have a local resources eco mod anyways.

I have already moved on.

But that doesn't mean that I'll in a relevant thread like the one about this patch  I gave my full feedback about Magic, Economy, and everything I felt relevant to this patch. The major game mechanics as I see it are economy, dynasty, quest, magic, negotiation. The major systems that Beta 1 centered around. I criticize the economy more because it deserves it any more detail than that isn't relevant to the topic.

My apologies to everyone else interested in the thread, I didn't realize my feedback would become a thread derail. Shame on you who feel the need to ridicule my criticism without regard to the thread topic. At least do

P.S. Wil I wish I had your optimism but the dev responses seem rather deadset on their model and feedback is clearly NOT wanted on it.

From my brief time with the latest build...

How has the stability of the current build gotten better or worse for you?

Massive improvement. I was getting crashes every game, often, sometimes leaving the game unplayable. I have yet to have a single crash during gameplay with the new build. Only crash so far was when I exited an existing game and tried to start a new game, I suffered a CTD. Some others have already reported this bug, so I think it will be common enough to be easily fixable. Really pleased with the bump in stability with this build.

How do you like the gameplay, in all its facets, so far?

I love it. I know I am supposed to be hating life while I play the Beta, but I can't help love it. The devs are really on the right track so far with the gameplay, as basic as it is at this time. The main feature 'missing' for me right now is tactical combat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that since it is one of my favorite parts of games like this, and since there wasn't any tactical combat in GalCiv to show me what the devs are capable of. I have high hopes for the tactical combat, but it won't be make or break. The existing gameplay is rough, but shows great promise.

How do you like the graphics, what little there are, and what are you most excited for regarding the graphics?

The cloth map was a brilliant concept, both for the final game and for the beta. I prefer darker fantasy artwork, but the current art does have charm. I'm really looking forward to seeing my towns in the 3D engine. Building them up will be a big reward as games go on.

How 'Into' the game do you get?  How much does the current build drag you in and 'Addict' you, or not?

Very much so for gameplay, not much for story and personality. The devs have talked a great deal about giving the game character, but those aspects of their ideas haven't made it into the game yet. The inclusion of strong character / personality / whatever is one of the major things I am keeping up my hopes for.

What things are you most excited for in the near future of the Beta?  Further down the road?  Just prior to, or right after, the retail release?

Near Future: Improved / Finalized game mechanics. I'm not a big fan of multiplayer in strategy games, but I am excited about trying it out. I'm mostly looking forward to improvements to the housing / food mechanics, roads, etc.

How does Elemental stack up to what you would consider to be its 'peers'?

So far, amazingly well, considering its rough state. I've been in a mood for strategy games lately, and have gone back to old favorites such as Civ and Total War. Elemental has so much potential for depth, and I am really loving the gameplay so far, even compared to completed, polished games.

What things about the current build would you see removed/implemented in future builds that isn't already planned, and what could (Or may need) to be improved?

1) Not planned AFAIK: As much individuality and character as possible! I love designing my own units, but as in Gal Civ II, the end result is often meaningless. I'm sure it will matter more in the tactical combat engine (I hope), but like others I want more meaningful choices in my units. I want to be able to give units more abilities and character. This also applies to civilizations, towns, and buildings. I want to design the look of my buildings and the character of my civilization.

2) Civics: Right now, the factions feel the same, with just stat differences. I want to be able to really guide the course of my civilization, or at least be able to develop them to make them unique. I would prefer the ability to make decisions about government, society, etc, similar to the Civics system in Civ IV. If we can't decide that sort of thing, let each Civ have more unique techs that help to define them and make them stand out.

3) Related to #1 and #2, more things that will lend character and personality and also have an impact on gameplay, such as Noble Houses. Looking at great works of fantasy such as A Song of Fire and Ice, the Noble Houses had a huge impact on the story and gave a great deal of character to the plot and characters. I would love to see something similar in Elemental, with different Noble houses, merchant groups, religious groups, etc. all with a part to play in telling the story and impacting gameplay. FFH2 has a fairly basic system for this in some mods, but I think Elemental could do it much better.

What Mods will you be most excited to build/play, and how do you think E:WoM's modding will stack up to other games, particularly those that are also highly moddable?
It sounds like the devs are committed to making this one of the most modable games of all time, and I am very excited about that. I hope that the tools / available assets will be designed for ease of use to help people who aren't big programmers and scripters, while still being powerful enough to allow for the creation of great mods.

The stability has gotten worse for me in the latest build. Last beta I was able to start a new game in the middle of a continuing game, whereas now it just CTD. I'd like to submit a bug report, but I don't know how to point the devs to my Dropbox account.

I am having CTDs as well, but I think that all of these CTDs are related to 1 specific "bug". The debug.err looks like the same after the crashes.

Right click on the item you want to share with them (a file, not a folder) and select Dropbox there. It should give you an option to "Copy Public Link". Select that and paste that link somewhere in the Beta section. Like this:

Edit: Just in case...

File must be in the "Public" folder placed in the "My Dropbox" folder placed wherever you have it.

Ah, thanks.
