April 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament - Rules and Registration

April 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament - Rules and Registration

DG Community - we are in the process of organizing a Demigod 2v2 tournament.  This tournament is open to all that would like to participate, but does require that you follow this thread for updates, etc, as the majority of the communications including brackets will be published here.

This thread will provide the latest tournament rules, 2 man teams that have registered, and individuals that are looking to be a part of a team but do not currently have a partner.  If you'd like to participate and don't have a team, indicate so here.  Then, make efforts either in this thread or via pm to form your own team. If you are unable to form a two man team, don't worry.  All of the individuals that have indicated that they'd like to participate and were not successful at forming a 2-man team will be randomly placed into teams on the cut off date.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

Tournament Rules:

  • You may only select characters as indicated in the grid below:

  • Each match in the tournament will be the best 2 out of 3 games
  • All matches will be played on cataract with default settings (the only exceptions being AI HP on Very High and AI Gold/XP on low)
  • After teams are formed, they will be randomly placed into a bracket to determine who will fight who.  Everything will be random initially in round 1.  In the following rounds, the winners from one game will play the winners from another based on location in the bracket starting from the top on to the bottom.
  • Each team will play 1 round on light side, then 1 round on dark side.  If there is a 3rd round, the team that had the fastest win in game 1 or 2 gets to pick the side they want to be on (keep in mind the following rule).
  • The team that is on the dark side must pick their characters and ready up first.  Then the light gets to pick and the dark side does not have a chance to adjust their characters.
  • To track your wins, you must do the following - post the replay at gamereplays.org.  If you have issues with gamereplays, upload the file to rapid share and provide us with a link.  Also, provide a link to the match in the pantheon and let me know if its a win or loss.  The winning team should do this for each and every match.
  • UberFix 1.02 must be used (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/374315) UberFix is a mod that simply fixes many of the bugs in Demigod.  Check the modding forum for everything that is fixed by UberFix 1.02.

How will we handle crashes:

If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match.  If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark).  If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win.  If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, a third party will review the replay of the match and render a decision.  Be aware that the 3rd party must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone.

How we will handle invalid game states:

The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match.  In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes.  If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and we will review.  If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team should be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts. Please be reasonable, though.  We all know that Demigod has its bugs and its still pretty easy to encounter an invalid game state even if no one has intentionally triggered it.  If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof.

Also be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any foul play.

Prizes:

Outside of prestige in our small community, there is also a cash prize thanks to community contributions.

Currently, the total amount pledged for this tournament is $199.95.  Of that $199.95, I have received $99.95.  If you would like to contribute to the pot, please pm me and I'll get you the needed info to send me a payment.  If individuals do not come through on their pledges, I will not be personally covering the difference.  My goal is to collect the pledged amount before the tournament starts and I will be providing updates as I receive the pledged money.

Please thank our contributors and consider contributing to the prize yourself.

he's there just in case some crazy unforeseen circumstance comes up and one of the members from the dedicated team can't play.
Glad to hear you're volunteering yourself if I'm unable to play a round due to some crazy unforeseen circumstance.

Hope you play Sedna well.

If you're saying we should be disqualified instead of letting Ninki play if one of the dedicated players can't make it; then I don't agree with that argument because if you lose with Ninki as a sub, you would have lost to the original team also and in theory tournaments should be won by the best players.

And If you're upset that you don't have any friends to sub in case you can't make it, well then I'm sorry.  I'd gladly play vs a team using a sub rather then move on just because they have a guy missing.  If you cut your argument down to one essential statement you're basically saying "I mad that I won't get a free win if one of you doesn't show up."

If the person subbing could actually hotkey all their actions I might care enough to say something... but as it is...

also ya ninki basically said HEY I THINK JANOOK IS NOT DEAD!  YOU CAN PLAY WITH HIM.

Then he toodled on msn and said nothing else. I wonder if Janook even knows...

1. Prize money goes to winners only, or second and third place get a piece?

My take is winner take all at this point.  Be aware that I, at this point, have people that have PLEDGED money.  No one has has actually paid their pledge as of right this second.  My goal is to have all of the money collected before the tourney starts.  I expect a few people will pay today.

2. We instituting a First Contact or 30 second Grace Period for game start? I.E. Monks stuck in citadel, extremely wrong favor choice, game takes forever to load, etc worth a restart?

I say no 30 second grace rule.  Its not all that difficult to micro your monks. I agree that it sucks to have your monks stuck in the citadel because of a lame bug, but the only times I've lost monks to the citadel was because I wasn't paying attention for 2 seconds after spawning.  It can be easily avoided, so I say no grace.

3. Who gets to select map side in game three and why?

we still haven't bottomed this out.  Keep coming with feedback otherwise I will simply make a decision.  And my decision will be some simple rule (like whoever won the 2nd match gets to pick).  And it does matter, because whoever is on light gets to wait while the players on dark pick first.  If you are awesome with all characters, you will surely what to change characters to counter a team's choices instead of just picking the same 2 dgs over and over.  IMO - whoever is on light should have a better chance of beating the team on dark if all players are awesome.

4. If a team wins the tournament and isn't already there should they automatically qualify for Tier 1?

Unless there is a STRONG disagreement, then I would say yes - tier 1 bound be the winners.  Most of the tier 1's (that I've named anyway) are in the tourney.  If someone is not in that list and wins, then they clearly belong there (at the top of the list imo).

5. Can a team who loses to 1 player/1 AI make the argument for a rematch? (I say no, but I thought we should put this one to bed before it happens)

My stance is as follows:  If my teammate drops for whatever reason, the 2 teams should have a brief, but immediate conversation.  If the team that lost a guy thinks they would have won for sure - say "do you think we would have won."  Team 2 will respond, yes or no.  If they say yes, then team 2 should concede.  Take a screen shot if you are concerned.  If there is a disagreement, simply end the game and submit a replay for review.  You should not have to beat down the other team with an AI teammate to win.  Actually, it may lessen your case if you try to do so and fail.  You might even want to simply concede if you teammate drops and the discuss the probable outcome outside of the game.  We can and will review matches as needed.

6. Can one player sub for 4 teams? Seems a bit murky

I'm just going to make a simple call on this now.  In the instance of ninki subbing for 50 people if needed, I'll allow it as long as ninki would only sub 1 time MAX per round (eg ninki doesn't simply become the other partner for everyone in GM).  I expect that the window for finishing a round will be ample enough to accommodate even GM :)  We are building this tournament for and around the community, you know. I'll listen to arguments.  I honestly don't expect GM to have any real issues with scheduling a single match over a 3 day period or so.

Why not, and lucky for you I do play Sedna. I'll sub for anyone for that matter but of course my babies take first priority. I do warn you though, that does not mean I will win the game for you. Everyone in GM knows that 2v2's aren't my strong suit.

Also, it's not a "special rule" for us if pacov would implement it for everyone. I'm sure ANY team would be allowed a sub if they wanted to, go for it! :)

And I don't like the rules. Never did, never will but I was done complaining about that over at the other thread a few days ago.

Magnus, he should know I have a partner for him. I told Shane to pass the message but he was too busy with himself. I'll pm him but he should be in.

PS. ThatGuyYouLove/King_of_Thorns will probably need a partner too, so if that happens we'll have 4 GM teams. How amazing.

And my thoughts:

1. Prize money goes to winners only, or second and third place get a piece?

Winner take all

2. We instituting a First Contact or 30 second Grace Period for game start? I.E. Monks stuck in citadel, extremely wrong favor choice, game takes forever to load, etc worth a restart?

No grace period is fine

3. Who gets to select map side in game three and why?

I think magnus' idea of shortest win time of previous two games is a good one.  The qualifying team gets to chose their side, and if they choose Light then the other team has to pick DGs first.

4. If a team wins the tournament and isn't already there should they automatically qualify for Tier 1?

Yah, if you are beating most of the Tier 1's to win then you should be Tier 1.

5. Can a team who loses to 1 player/1 AI make the argument for a rematch? (I say no, but I thought we should put this one to bed before it happens)

Immediate rematch unless outcome certain

6. Can one player sub for 4 teams? Seems a bit murky

Sure.  If there was any doubt on the primary's level of skill I guess it would be more of an issue.

Quick question:

Looking back on page 2-3 at Hedgie's system - UB/TB isn't a valid combo, but the chart we are using now allows it.  Which is correct?

Thanks

good question... answer have i not atm.

I think that when we moved Occ to 1.5 points, we dropped TB to 2.5 to keep Occ-TB as a valid combination.

This allows both UB - TB and Rook - TB.

pacov, you should hire RAWRRRR and I to be commentators so people can listen in if they want to know how the games are going.

It'll be some hot steamy times.

OK - here are some updates.  I'll update the OP sometime today.

The tourney will be a winner take all tourney for prize money.  I'm collecting money from people and will handle issuing the payments via paypal to the individuals on the winning team.  If there is any fee in paypal, that will come out of the total winnings (eg not out of pocket for me).

We won't be having the 30 second or 1st contact grace period.

I'm cool with the magnus's idea to have the team that has the fastest win in game 1 or 2 to get to pick the side they want to be on.  The team that is on dark must pick their characters and ready up first.  Then light gets to pick and dark side does not have a chance to adjust their characters. This seems reasonably fair.

The total amount pledged for this tournament is $120 at this point.  Of that $120, I have received $20 as of today.  Thanks go out to Ke5trel for his generous contribution of $20.  If you would like to contribute to the pot, please pm me and I'll get you the needed info to send me a payment.  If people do not come through on their pledges, I will not be personally covering the difference.  My goal is to collect the pledged amount before the tournament starts and I will be providing updates as I receive the pledged money.

At this point, I feel very comfortable with using uberfix 1.02beta1.  There is still some testing to do on ptarth's latest version.  If we can vet the latest version, then I'd be pleased to use that version instead.  I'd recommend everyone here take a moment to review the change logs for uberfix so you are aware exactly what bugs are fixed.  At the very least, Oculus has more viable strategies with his abilities working as they were intended.

edit - GUYS - REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE TOMORROW AT MIDNIGHT.  Time is almost out for you to either find a team or get registered as a free agent.
