The currency of Elemental

The currency of Elemental

It’s time to name the currency in Elemental.

The Random House team has come up with rigma which we like a lot.

An alternative would be gildars.

But if someone has a really cool name we’ll consider it.

Tridus and Shurdus, on the gold discussion: I came up with this constructive solution, a try to be inventive!: when the game starts, the economy of all civs and all trade is based on barters. (value can still be numerically expressed for the player, but in brackets, or cows! or whatever) The first civ that researches Minting as technology get to name their currency which is then automatically also used as currency name for everyone for the rest of the game. This would reflect the high development level of this civ compared to the others, meaning their coins spread and get accepted as the general currency. The player would get a few basic suggestions for names, e.g. based on the name of his civ, sovereign, or just plain "gold coins", but could enter any name he wants.
I hate it.

>:(

Nah I kid. ^_^ It would be a good system and I see this working. Why not?

How about, when you create a kingdom/empire or a soverign you have the choice of choosing a currency. I would love to name my currency after me for I am their all powerful ruler, maybe the coin of the existing 12 factions can be named after a great leader in their lore. After all it narrows down to an XML tag ....maybe

Just a though

I vote for resrouce based ecnomcy for post apolciy world, othere whys I will also thro my vote with the 30 othere users who think that we should use resrouces gold sliver copper

1 Gold = 10 Silver = 100 Copper

makes senes to me and its simple and easy and its common something that all races would understand no matter where they are from.

ever race may have diffrent name  one gold coin could be called a mark, or birttin a pound, spain called them gold dublions or what ever  but there be no common name for a world currency other then gold coin which they all have same weight to them

Rigma doesn't sound right, just call it Rig. "30 rigs for a sword" or just call it gold, hard to go wrong with gold :D

I foresee the trading of expletives. How much is that sword, good sir? Oh, just a mere twenty $#*!'s

Don't much like rigma as others have mentioned it reminds of magma or rocks.  Gildar being reminiscent of gold is fine by me.

Ultimately though, I think the minting tech idea followed by the option to name your currency would be grand.  Have a default but allow players to choose.  If we're really worried about expletives, unit and town names are going to be plagued by that already.

Edit:  Giving it more thought, I realize the problems introduced with currency that has to exist before coinage technology exists.  I still think something upon your hero or faction's creation would be a good time to choose this considering it already asks to name your people and other descriptions.  The base non-player created factions could just default to whatever SD comes up with.  As for the tech itself, it'd be nice if it gave a small economic boon when researched explained by a unified monetary system being more cohesive than whatever clamshells or shiny rocks people were trading with before.

"If we're really worried about expletives, unit and town names are going to be plagued by that already."

And after the first "incident" concerning such childish behaviour, it becomes the perfect Filter on which to base who gets into your MP games or NOT! :typo:

I think we can safely say, that "rigma" is not very popular. Any decisions have been taken by Stardock with regard to changing the currency name?

No matter what you choose, you can't beat ruuuuuupeeees :)

Alright. Its time to end this. Brad needs a name for the damned book, and it is our duty to deliver a name for the book. As far as the game goes, my vote goes for a custom name. What you choose for currency will be displayed as the string for currency in every situation, so you don't need to know tons of different names of currency. This would be a purely cosmetic decision. If this is not applied to the game, I will make this humble suggestion from my analysis of the world of elemental.

So here is the scenario. Massive populations of people are scattered across the earth after the cataclysm. People groups are trying to survive in barren land, while attempting to avoid persecution by the hands of the fallen who would see them enslaved. At this point in time, the currency is bartering, however it is after this time that you will create a city on lush land with metals and resources that could be used for currency(whoever said currency had to be gold coins or anything in the shape or composition of a coin?) The question is, at this point in time, WHAT is of the most value? Safety? Comfort/Company? Food? Clothes? Fire? Magic? Shards? The Sovereign? Knowledge? Technology? Books? Religion? The land itself? I ask that everyone here contribute to decide the number one important thing to the inhabitants of the world of elemental. Then we can go from there, once we have a majority consensus.

Sovereign

What about simply calling them "Coins"....

If you gotta go ficticious, what about "Quell" (as in "That hat costs 30 Quell")

Actually the most valuable thing would be Salt (always has an always will be the most valuable comodity), but something tells me they aren't going to go with that for a currency :)

How about giving us a default, but letting us choose whatever we want?

Its obvious from reading the first 5 pages that everyone would prefer something different.

"gold" wouldn't make much sense because not everyone in the world would have a gold mine. In fact gold would probably be worth less than steel, because you can't make weapons and armour out of gold.

Sovereign

Might seem Anglo-centric to some, but definitely localization-friendly and exempt from made-up-word complaints.

Sovereign would work well actually... Assuming the currency is some sort of coin. Our likeness would go on each one.
