Personalizing your kingdom

Personalizing your kingdom

Partys (7)

I’m back from the Game Developer’s Conference. Lots of fun.  I did a lot of demoing of Impulse::Reactor but also showed a few journalists what we were doing in Elemental.

The most common question I got is how is Elemental different from other turn-based strategy games (ala Civilization or Galactic Civilizations).

The answer: Elemental is a much more personal experience.  In Civilization or GalCiv, the player exists outside the game. It is about (as their names imply) their civilization.

Putting you in the game

In Elemental, the player starts out in the game, by themselves.  They literally must build their kingdom (or empire) from the ground up with nothing. When starting up in the sandbox mode, the player is asked who they are and can design (both in terms of traits as well as visuals) what they are like.CreateSoverign (12)

The connection between your army and your people

Similarly, when you build armies, the number of people in your “units” matters because each one comes from your town. Early on, an outpost or village may only have a couple dozen people.  Thus, each person you draft from your village is one less person there to grow food, build houses, research technology, etc.

Our goal is to avoid abstracting your armies.  If you zoom in, you will be able to see that every person in your army is different (even if it’s just cosmetic) to help send home the point that these virtual people are part of your cause.

Your dynasty

Similarly, because we’re a fantasy title and not historical, we can put the player as the head of a multi-generational dynasty.  Thus, your sovereign’s virtual off-spring can be sent off to battle and be put in danger.

The Reaction

The reaction we got from this was very positive.  Over the coming months, we’ll be fine tuning this experience with the beta testers. And since we’re our own publisher, we’ll take as long as we need to get it right. :)

How will this impact the engine and loading these models into memory? I love having individual models for each unit, but won't you hit the 2 gb ceiling very fast or do you have a strategy already to deal with that?
It's likely not individual models, but just some kind of randomizer. It doesn't actually have to load all of them individually.

It will probably be a mix of 5 facial features that will recombine at random to give slightly different faces, hairsyles, and possibly clothing as well. (Perhaps even slightly different skin complexions from a range of summer tan to winter-pale.

You won't be swapping spit with but one. :)

The current build allows many, many, many, variants... but they must be built.

Good News. Once built, they get recorded, an re-appear, when a similiar Tech combo level is reached.

Heads up. Tech is variable as well. We hear rumors... No Apartment Tech until 256 turns?

We remain skeptical :)

Just make sure the command window is not too wide. Or make sure it shift up or down as your empire increase in size.

For example (I probably already mentionned this), I played a PC game called "Pacifc storm" which was horrible. Each Fleet contained ships which contained aiplane squad which contained airplanes which contained pilots. Each of these pilots had a morale and a training level plus a few more stats.

If I am the commander of the US naval force, I do not want to bother about the morale level of pilot X on carrier Y. It's won't really influence my strategic decisions. But if I was a squad leader, the moral of each pilot in my squad is important.

"Pacific War" was designed to be a micro-managers dream.  It was very loosely based on "War in the Pacific" (a table-top wargame) iirc.  The designer wanted to do something that detailed on tabletop, but it just isn't possible.  Computers make it possible, if not practical.

Hey Brad, you're using my Sovereign!! :D

-Ragnar (that really is my name)

PS: Civ IV, Warlords expansion, was really wierd when I was playing against the stock Ragnar leader.  It got really confusing when it would say Ragnar did such and such, and I had to figure out was it him or me.

I wonder, a player's governing style that affect their relationship with their people?

For example, is your kingom a strict religious kingdom (Spanish Inquistion), does it favor merchantile economy, is it a typically feudal society, an enlightened ruler or is yours a kingom where might makes right and fear rules the night (think Vlad the Impaler) or is yours a warrior kingdom that thrives on plunder. Will players be able to favor a particular diety or allow several dieties?

Will your governing choices affect your relationships with other kingdoms, your people, and traveling adventurers?

King Bounty Gold is in the RPG category on the Impulse store http://www.impulsedriven.com/products/ESD-IMP-W372

You are the leader of an army. Your stats increase and you can equip item. It is more a RPG than a TBS game, especially with all the stories and quests.

It's a combo of both. My favorite Fantasy TBS to date ie Age Of Magic:Shadow Magic no other game in this genra except Civilitation iv and All the Galactic 2 Civ games have been as fun to play over the years.  This game may just replace it for my Fantasy TBS itch

SO Brad, did you get to meet Sid Meier? Or do you know him already?
I'm afraid not. I'd love to meet him.

I'm friends with Soren Johnson (designer of Civilization IV). Elemental's river system is Soren's design back from when he was still at Firaxis (another reason why we love to Firaxis guys).

Wait a second, does this mean that elemental will have horribly unconnected river graphics (in perfect squares) and maybe railroads that don't connect in any way to the tiles around them? :P

[refrences strange graphical oddities with the river/road overlays in Civ4)

Yes Civ 4 has these but it is still the best Civ game out. And the Fantasy mods for CIV 4 Orbis is simply awsome

Best idea in this entire thing is the fact that actual town population is used to create the armies.

This makes me very happy :)
