Personalizing your kingdom

Partys (7)

I’m back from the Game Developer’s Conference. Lots of fun.  I did a lot of demoing of Impulse::Reactor but also showed a few journalists what we were doing in Elemental.

The most common question I got is how is Elemental different from other turn-based strategy games (ala Civilization or Galactic Civilizations).

The answer: Elemental is a much more personal experience.  In Civilization or GalCiv, the player exists outside the game. It is about (as their names imply) their civilization.

Putting you in the game

In Elemental, the player starts out in the game, by themselves.  They literally must build their kingdom (or empire) from the ground up with nothing. When starting up in the sandbox mode, the player is asked who they are and can design (both in terms of traits as well as visuals) what they are like.CreateSoverign (12)

The connection between your army and your people

Similarly, when you build armies, the number of people in your “units” matters because each one comes from your town. Early on, an outpost or village may only have a couple dozen people.  Thus, each person you draft from your village is one less person there to grow food, build houses, research technology, etc.

Our goal is to avoid abstracting your armies.  If you zoom in, you will be able to see that every person in your army is different (even if it’s just cosmetic) to help send home the point that these virtual people are part of your cause.

Your dynasty

Similarly, because we’re a fantasy title and not historical, we can put the player as the head of a multi-generational dynasty.  Thus, your sovereign’s virtual off-spring can be sent off to battle and be put in danger.

The Reaction

The reaction we got from this was very positive.  Over the coming months, we’ll be fine tuning this experience with the beta testers. And since we’re our own publisher, we’ll take as long as we need to get it right. :)

My only critisism I have with the whole game is the way some of the heroes are depicted with their stats, etc. as if on a trading card.  Is this necessary?  Is there a card game in co-development like the book for Elemental?

Will we be able to "promote" any given army unit to give him/her special gear, or will only heroes be allowed to have individual gear?  That is, if a "person" from the village is part of a group, does every person in the group need to have the same gear?

Also, will it be possible to define "groups" with variable gear?  Uniform, disciplined armies are one thing.  I think it'd be cool to recruit disorganized mobs, warbands, etc. with disparate equipment, experience, and even training, but to maneuver them as a single unit.

Nice screenies, obviously a lot of effort is being put into this game

It will be very exciting to see which title I will love more, Civ V or elemental. So far I like what I see about both. :)

This game is just SO COOL. I can't wait. I'm not in the Beta yet, though I hope to get into Beta 2. But Beta 3 is gonna be something else, with the graphics and all.

No card game in development. We just like the concept of info cards.  Sins has info cards too. We just decided in Elemental to spruce them up cosmetically.

Personally I think it works extremely well.

I can't wait for Beta phase 3. Elemental has a very big potential because of the diversity of the gameplay + modding. In Stardock we [TBS gamers] trust! :)

Indeed, reminds me a bit of Magic the Gathering

I think there is another, simpler response to the question: "Why do we need Elemental when we have Civ IV and GalCiv II?"

In the realm of TBS 4X games there are three sub-genres: Historical, Space, and Fantasy.  There is a HUGE void when it comes to fantasy TBS.  Clearly Civ IV leads the historical sub-genre, GalCiv II leads space, and Elemental will now finally satisfy the demand for a fantasy based TBS.  There's a demand there for sure.  It completes the holy trinity of TBS!

That just sounds so very cool. Will you as ruler go for a strong army and thereby fail to fulfil feeding the population. Will this be something like we saw in the Lord of the Realms 1 and 2??

Personally, I love customizable stuff. I love games that allow the player to show some creativity. Making my own units will be very fun. It will be like the good parts of Spore, but with a gameplay element.

Cant wait for our beta to be hooked up with the "pretty stuff."

Not enough spikes on the armour.

Does the apperance of your (important) people change over time?

Just make sure the command window is not too wide. Or make sure it shift up or down as your empire increase in size.

For example (I probably already mentionned this), I played a PC game called "Pacifc storm" which was horrible. Each Fleet contained ships which contained aiplane squad which contained airplanes which contained pilots. Each of these pilots had a morale and a training level plus a few more stats.

If I am the commander of the US naval force, I do not want to bother about the morale level of pilot X on carrier Y. It's won't really influence my strategic decisions. But if I was a squad leader, the moral of each pilot in my squad is important.

I think there are some definitely some fantasy TBS games, including the newish King's Bounty series, and the slightly older, though in decline, Heroes of Might and Magic, which peaked about two games ago with HOMM 3.  Disciples I and II were also decent, if decidedly different, and not really a 4x type game.

Actually, the original King's Bounty (which I still have floppies of) is what inspired the HOMM series.

I do like the newer KB games as well, and I still occasionally play the original on DOSbox.

I bet all the kids picked on him.

Anyway, you say eah individual will look dif. Will female soldiers make an appearance in units alongside males if you have the femal+male soldiers trait?

Thing I love the most  in Elemental is I can live the life in the world that I conquered. Looking for the game like this for ten years.

P.S. The first screenshot remind me of gathering the party outside the dungeon in WOW. Love it.

In what world? Certainly not in this one.
