Apache's are on-sight, you have to request F-22's to do a flyby.  That, and you can't tell a group of F-22's to hover in place and kill anything that passes

Nope, but if you have Apaches hovering over that line and I have F-22's you won't have Apaches much longer now will you? Though if we gonna talk military on a video game forum where I can be nerdy and people might understand me... TIE Defender (ya, I know its not real but its still the best fighter in existence!)

Thats true. But then again, Apaches are helicopters. And helicopters have weaknesses. A remote guided missile for example, with heat sensors.

Personally, I never liked vertical flight. Partially because it requires an incredible amount of skill, and partly because its not so....awesome, like horizontal flight is ;)

I just love every type of plane there is. Be it either for military usage or transportation usage.

Now I have to admit, I only have a few hours in the Simulator in helicopters, while more than 100 hours in planes....so yeah :S

But you and Maccilia forget about 1 thing:

The AV-8B Harrier II. The strongest weapon of the British probably, which features vertical and horizontal flight both in 1 piece. It requires an incredible amount of skill to be piloted, and only the best of the best get to actually sit in its cockpit.

Snipe, you Brits can be rightfully be proud of it :)

The Harrier has been proven to be useful, but has a crash rate somewhere in the 20% range I think.... so you'd have to have the biggest balls and amazing skill to fly one and kick another comparable plane, F-35 or SU-27 for example.

The only issue is that, if you wanna get into it, flares only work while you're moving, otherwise the missile will still latch on to your general position, and that the plane flying by probably has flares, too.  So we have radar-guided missiles.

The British use the GR9 Harrier. AV-8B Harrier II is the USMC variant.

The crash rate rises because of the hovering maneuvers actually; right when the do a VTOL landing/takeoff is the time that the plane is most like to flip over and crash.

F-35B's are also VTOL capable BTW. Su-27s have poor cockpit ergonomics, thus hindering pilot operations.

True. The Harrier's awesomeness is only matched/exceeded by a select few planes.

But one misconception is that hovering would regularly be part of combat operations; for example, hovering like a helo to kill tanks or something. The problem is that VTOL jets don't have the armor of a ground-attack helicopter (or an A-10, where the pilot almost literally sits IN AN ARMORED BATHTUB). Thus, they want to get moving as much as possible. Additionally, you can't hover at higher altitudes; my guess is not higher than the average 2-story home. The Harrier's nozzles are useful though because they provide a significant boost in A2A combat.

Whiskey: Do you know that the Harrier is the only plane that can perform a "full stop" in the air?

Like when it is already moving at high speed, the nozzles turn to point front, thus they reduce the aircraft's speed so fast, that its like you are hitting on the brakes really hard on a high speed moving car. It can decelerate so fast, that the enemy who's "next" to you, will skim forwards, and you can be right behind him in no time.

Pretty neat trick huh? ;)
