Listen, the possibility of me getting a virus is less by visiting a website like Wincustomize.com than it is visiting xxx.swank.com. Point being, surf safe and you'll be safe, surf the risque' and your chances are 50/50 so live with it...

Nice post Ed but. I have tried many over the years and I think it's what you find that works for you. Take the first one on the list "Comodo Internet Security" and do a review search for it. the results are almost all bad so go figure. Jim most of the Internet packages also include anti-virus such as the one that is on top of the list. I use BitDefender and it's on the Do not Use list. now they did test 2009 and i use 2010 Internet security, but I was always happy with the 2009. So the user, uses what they want and that is the best software for them and this is only my opinion, I'm not an expert.

I have used Online Armor and NOD32, plus A2 as a scanner only for more than 6 years and have had nesx to no problems.  The ones I had were my fault.

I wish I were ambitious enough to start an internet security firm in the comfort of my own basement, where I offer paid tests and evaluations to firewall software firms with a proviso that if they pay up and don't like the test results, they can opt to keep them private and unpublished.  That matousec guy and his college buddies were pretty sharp.  The only thing that would make their operation perfect would be if they published verified, repeatable results using documented testing methodologies.

I would be interested in seeing a list of Anti Virus apps. I'm sure the free versions such as Avast and AVG are higher in the list then Norton and Mcaffee. There were in a list I saw a few years ago. Norton is horrible.

McAfee isn't much better. Matter of fact when I work on a customer's PC I recommend they get rid of Norton or McAfee ASAP. I can't believe people pay for these programs when all they do is clutter your PC.

I run Spybot Search and Destroy once a week just to be sure, but it hasn't found any bad items in years... zilch-none, eff all.

Like I said before, Pat at my local PC store refuses to stock McAfee products.  He will order them in if the customer is insistent and pays a deposit, but for the most part he recommends they use Avast. As he said to me, he makes such a little mark-up that it's not worth his while tying up capital to purchase MCAfee products, particularly as they're in such low demand around here.

Don't think he likes Symantec/Norton, either... he just stocks it because local demand is there, but like McAfee, I guess he'd rather not.

Like a hot rock, used it for a year some time ago (the free version) but had too many issues and changed over when AVG came out.

I run spybot weekly, I use two browsers, IE has first and third party cookie control and FF that does not. yesterday's scan showed 22 tracking cookies all downloaded using firefox. (cookie comment, not a browser comment)

IMHO: If you're using Windows, their firewall protection works just fine.

AVG is upgrading their free version, I know this by the daily nag screen reminding me that the world ends December 1st. I've thought about changing over to Avira or Avast primairly due to the nag but realize that I could be trading for a pig in a poke. I wonder how user friendly and hopefully, less obnoxious these other two programs are. comments welcome.
