Last person to post wins, unless they are a moderator or admin.

Basically, this game is played so that the last person who post wins. What do they win? The ThreadKiller's Achievement; The honor of being the last person to post by virtue of the content of their post. However, moderators, admins, and anyone else who has the ability to lock the thread are disqualified from winning the ThreadKiller's Achievement, if they win by locking. If the thread is won by method of locking, the "winner" gains the Achievement Of Reprehensible Epic Lameness.

5 mins into installing Win 7 64 bit and Im hating it. The 4+ hours spend on transfering everything from Vista 32 bit seems like a waste right now. Nothing works. XO :'( :hugme:

what do you mean nothing?

im thinking of getting it too, so whats your opinion?

Well its my fault for thinking its plug and play. But if your doing a clean install like I have. Going from 32 to 64. Be prepared to download/reinstall EVERYTHING. Ive have spend the last 4 hours figuring that you cant transfer over progams. A live and learn experience.

I cant say my opinion yet b/c Im fixing my retared idea of transfering everything. LOL, but honestly I like the look of it. But I can say yet if it runs better or not.

I have Vista 64 and let me warn you, even with Vista you have compatibility issues. It's not that it's Windows, it's just that the two bit systems just can't coexist. Yeah, you can get some of the higher end stuff to work, but that's why it was higher end back then. I find that simple programs (like label printing apps and other office type programs) suffer insanely. Even some 'lesser games' don't work. Total Annihilation will load on 64, BUT it's very simply coded expansion (Core Contingency) doesn't work.

Might be able to get it running with DOSbox or some other simulator, but odds are older programs are going to see a plethora of patches and mods via third parties flooding the net. Already had to find one for Battlezone.

8(|    <X3       XO   NO CORE CONTINGENCY!?!??! OMG...I want my 32 bit back right now!!

as far as cor contingincy goes, I simply copied the entire cavedog folder from an OLD win95 box that had all of TA installed and updated, to my w764bit and it runw without any problems.

Okay, so maybe it's the installer setup that's archaic. In any case, I did not have it installed in any machine. Then one day I was reminiscing and boom, discovered trouble.

Carbon, you like TA too? Have you played Supreme Commander?

I love TA....I spend more of my teenage live playing it. Over and over and over....I still rave about it even though its old as dirt for a game. I still think it looks good.

Yes Ive played Supreme Commander and the expansion. Have both somewhere....to be honest Experemental Units ruined the game for me. If it wasnt for those I win units I would play it more. I am excited about SC2( except for the Steam issue) b/c every unit is usefull all game long. And hopefully Experimentals wont be so crazy powerful.

The Experimentals in SC2 are hit and miss. They have the Cybran dragon which is a kill em all beast, but they also have the drop cannon, which is just a really convenient transport and factory. So I think it's more a matter of controlling yourself. Having played the scenarios, I've learned to do without experimentals, but defend against tehm quite successfully. Like all games, you have to limit yourself to increase the challenge.

But yes, TA set teh bar for real physics RTS. SC wouldn't be the same if it didn't have teh creator. Starcraft and all are fun, but too small and arcade-like to really compete with TA and SC. Btw, my best move in TA was when the enemy Commander was walking towards my defense line. If I popped him, he would eat a giant hole in my line and I would be screwed, so I told my weapons to hold fire and I got a transport to pick him up and flew it as fast as possible to his own base. It got well in before the AAs took it out, and him, causing the heart of their base to go POP! If you're ever in one of those suicidal jams, try it.

Well I can limit myself...but if you play online like I tried for a bit, it was a Rush Expermental as fast as you can...as many as you can... Very boring. It wasnt so much defeating Ex units. It was they were the only thing people cared to build.

Idk, IMHO Experemental units should be like Caps are in SINS...awesome but you had to baby them a bit. In SC you let them loose and build another one. Experementals should be a welcome addtion to a army not the entire army.

Well, of course when people play online like that it's just going to get boring. Against teh AI you get a little more variation, but you still have to watch for experimentals. I just overbuild on units I know can take them to compensate. It sucks, but it's what they did. The scenario makes it a little better cause experimentals are not available for a long time and objectives keep you from being so narrow-minded.

Hopefully the next is a little better about it, but I doubt it. Maybe they'll throw in an option for skirmishes that disallows experimentals. In any case, I enjoy the game. Sadly, can't find my copy of SC right now. Going back, TA is harder than I remembered.

excuse the noob, but what is TA?

Total Annihilation. It has an expansion called Core Contingency. Real physics sci-fi RTS. Total Annihilation: Kingdoms is the fantasy version with an amazing story that flows seamlessly into it's expansion, Iron Plague. The creator later took the general idea of TA, added more of a story and new graphic capabilities to make Supreme Commander, which also has an expansion (the name eludes me). Supreme Commander 2 is in development. If you like RTS, especially one more expansive than Starcraft but not as expansive as Sins, you should look it up. You can find it fairly cheap at bargain stores (Big Lots, Half-Price Books, etc.) and sales websites (eBay, Amazon, etc.).

And you're a newb (to be new to something), not a noob (to be a retarded, self-indulged, basement-dwelling geek), so it's okay.

ohhhh, so thats why ive been having trouble with the girls... too many 'o's... gotcha, cheers ;P

Glad to help. It really is a good game. If we lived anywhere close, I would even lend it out, it's just so much fun.

you're Canadian right... yeah.... thats pretty close to Australia... ;) thanks anyway

wait so TA is better than SC or the other way around or should i just get the both?

IMHO....TA is better. Much older but better I think.

SC is good, but in the attempt to be a newer 'TA' its lost some it what made TA awesome. I honestly blame the horde of Superweapons and Experimental units in SC. TA didnt have too many so good old fashioned war or attrition was more common and made for better gameplay.

Though Im bias....even in SINS I hate superweapons and perfer to slam fleets into the horde to win.

yeah, i find the older games tend to be better... M.A.X. was a great game from Interplay, doesnt work on new OS.. though :(

with that in mind, will TA work on Vista or newer? or is it not THAT old?

TA worked on my Vista 32 bit I had till yesterday...now that Im Win7 64 rumor has it it wont work. Which makes me very very very very very very very very sad.

Favorite game from Interplay was Decent and Decent 2.
