I dunno. I also watch the cut scenes in the game and they have the men running in like retarded baboons on meth. When I fight, I have this weird thing about approaching cautiously while taking cover to minimize casualties. I dunno, it seems to work, but maybe the creators of the game, you know, the guys who think giant metal pods falling from the sky was a good idea, have it right.

I'm not saying that any particular combat going on now or with the U. S. Army sets the example. Although I understand that Tyrannids would represent an amazingly terrifying opponent, I also know that two of the unknown soldiers are skeletons fused together when a flamethrower exploded and they died drenched in napalm. That is just one example of some amazing events that I'm sure have left skid marks in teh pants of those experiencing history.

Besides, I'm sure when 1,100 Romans watched over 100 thousand woden descend upon them, they probably thought of it in similar terms which we think of 40K battles. But discipline and training still persevered over numbers and psychological warfare.

i am not pretenting to be a military expert, nor that i was in the army (or any equivalent)

but warhammer 40k is so massivly overblown (thats why we love it) it would simply be stupid to compare it to our 'petty'  wars. also they have commisars for a reason and there is enough fluff telleing that even the best trained imperial guard are not always that brave as they supposed to be (deleying the enemy with their corpses)

Its human nature to want to preserve itself in desperate times. Fight or Flight. Not everyone natural instinces are to fight. Like me, I tend to run and put some distance between me and the problem.

So you cant blame anyone in the IG who natural insticts are to run. When under intense pressure, you go with your instincts. Training can help reprogram instincts but honesty in 40K, IG Guardsmen are not train very well. If you want trained IG use Kasrkin. Those are some hardcore IG.

Okay, maybe my issue is not so much with the IG, they are fictional after all, but I have to admit that the idea of throwing ill-trained men or under-equipped men into combat like that seems more like a method of population control than actual warfare. I'm just amazed by the idea that the same government that makes Space Marines also makes the IG. Aside from the mismatch, it just seems like they might just want to blow the cash over a few SM rather than a lot fo IG.

That and I can make the IG hold just fine. Kinda think it's funny they're always depicted the other way if it's actually possible to both play them and to win with them.

tesb, I never said you were pretending to be anything and I did not ask about the military to question your experience, as much as to guage what that experience was. I know it's hard to make comparisons, so I'm just finding the close I can. And yes, it is overblown, but due to crappy collision detection in the game, I find it less fun than it should be.

Anything to help the cause.

Give me a hundred Space Marines and I will hold the line, but if I can't get Space Marines, give me a thousand and we will see.

Give me a couple of Trolls and I will break the line. If I can't get that, give me tesb and we'll all have a laugh.

On the subject of DoW1 IG- I already think I know what my preferred strat will be. Simply sit behind a line of Kasrkins+Ogryns, pounding the enemy with Basilisk artillery+Leman Russ tanks, using a Baneblade to vaporize enemy vehicles, and a Vindicare Assasin behind enemy lines spotting and killing builders+heroes.

I say builders+heroes for the Vindicare target list, as it can 1-shot builders.

See? The defense line to clear the way and scoot up method works!

Meanwhile, give me a Type 2 (Orbital) Siege Cannon with Bentusi Power Grid Upgrades and I will destroy whatever province the line is on.

well that is the limit I have over IG tactics, now lets talk SM tactics

9 - 10 man squads with a flamer/heavy plasma gun each with veteran seargent

that will hold the line
