That same attitude is probably why many americans still get a pack of sigarets in their 4.8 litre 4x4. Is that a bad thing?

it's actually a 5.7 liter 4x4 and smoking here has become politically incorrect we now export the cigarettes to poor third world countries so they can help us rape the planet..... ;)

by the way......the Netherlands is #11 in cigarette consumption globally.....waayyy ahead of the US

have a nice day :)

Kinda falls down when I mention I'm not American.

It's probably not all that wise to alienate the majority of your audience with such vapid generalisations.

It doesn't fall down, above is just an example. There are many ways in which you can waste resources, above is a way, so is buying an overly powerful PSU.

I wasn't arguing that a bigger PSU is better, but rather was arguing against those who claim they are worse.

It's a subtle difference, one which has been clearly lost on some...

Then I'll repeat what I posted before: if both PSUs can do the job perfectly, then why waste the money on the higher purchase price? And if I'm apparantly to dumb for your subtle arguments, how about you just answer this question directly.

If you wanna take it down that road, google up 'kyoto'.

[edit] by the way quoting is still broken.

As I've said before, the committee-forming, tree-hugging do-gooders will get you everytime. Just line them up against a wall and shoot them ;p

As a side note, I hope you plan to install a 64-bits OS... Or drop your RAM to the 4GB range.

Keiyan, overkill

Yeah, looking at Windows 7 64 bit.

The Quattro is 80-Plus Bronze, and thus quite efficent for its power.

Jafo, how do you like it? I read that review and it does sound like a nit pick.

I'm by no means a tree-hugger, but there's a long way between tree-hugging and wasting energy for nothing.

Spill a cup of coffee though and there will be hell to pay }:)

Rnick....in real-life test/experience I can put my hand over the PSU exhausted air and it's cooler than I am.  What that simply means is very little of the energy consumed by what some like to claim is a waste is actually being lost to heat.

It's quiet, well made, and has all the connectivity anyone is likely to need with modular wiring component looms....;)

twifightDG... The rating or capacity of a PSU is not a waste of resources.  It doesn't magically dissipate unused/needed wattage into the ether.  What IS a waste of resources is the ill-considered purchase of one particular component only to be discarded and replaced by yet another.

I conserve resources by ensuring my purchases will see a long life.... and even when replaced, as the P4/3 gig was... it's via 'hand-me-down'....my wife uses it now.  The system is 5 years old or more....and the box is even older.  Is it stupidly excessive to buy a Lian Li aluminium case without a PSU for the better part of $200 AUD [and then not be discarding/putting up with a PSU that did not suit you] and still be using the same box...and thus also its same cardboard packaging even....7 plus years later?

Oh yeah but, you say....you could have put in a smaller PSU.  Yes, I did...5 years ago I put in a 600w ....and it's still working perfectly and I expect it to continue for another 5 years.

Now, if we're into vehicular analogy none of my cars has had a v8, 4.8 litre or otherwise.  Most of my driving life [35 years] has been in 4 cylinder cars.... the biggest of which is [my currently owned] the SAAB 9000 Turbo....2.3 litres ....and guess what?...it harnesses the wasted exhaust energy to turbocharge the engine induction....making it more efficient than a naturally aspirated IC engine.... and even THAT was bought second-hand so it would not end up in landfill anytime soon.  All of my cars have been second hand and thus not a direct inducement to manufacture more.

Architecture as a career teaches you all sorts of sensibilities relating to urban living and the future of our environment/society/life-style.  It's why I live CLOSE to the city....drive on average less than 7k kms a year, own/ride a handful of bicycles, take public transport, AND buy 1000watt PSUs....;)

I think I'm settled on the quattro then.

Ha ha, Jafo wins.

Apparantly so. We (Jafo and I) are still talking about 2 totally different things, no use keeping this discussion going. By the way, get a 2000W PSU (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft%3Aen-us&q=psu+2000w+atx&aq=f&oq=&aqi=). Anyone that says you shouldn't is just an arm chair expert and you should ignore him.

I'm going with AMD next time. Screw Intel.

Rnick ....doesn't seem to be a lot of difference, so the decision will be down to price and/or reputation of the manufacturer....;)

....oh, and NOT "no-one needs 1200...get the smaller one".....;p

  and  OldMsgt

1_  What's the current price for the building of your system??

2_  Why not a SSD Harddrive for the OS and main 3 games?

My system would be in the $4000-$5000 range, in USD.

I might consider a SSD, but the Velocirapters are plenty fast and cheaper than SSDs of an equal size.

Paul.... if you can afford that setup I'm sure you're good for a couple of 'maids' too ;)

rnick, have you looked at the lian-li cases or the silverstone ft-01?

Mine as I priced it out is about 2200 dollars

In the process of checking out Lian-Li. Would the FT-01 be big enough for 2 GTX 295s + water cooling with the cpu cooler?

Edit: which Lian Li case should I look at? Perhaps the Armorsuit PC-P80?

well, if you're going to water cool, the ft-01 won't be large enough. as for the lian-li caes, any of their full tower cases would be large enough. i had the V1200B for 3 years. the guy i sold it to is installing a danger-den water cooling system in it.

The Cooler Master ATCS 840 seems to be a good choice, as does the Armorsuit PC-P80.

Hmm, with the CM ATCS 840 would watercooling really be needed for the GPUs (With optional fans)?

What about the Lian-Li PC P80?

The Antec 1200?
