Hedge walls

What's up with the hedge walls? They dont provide any bonus aside from allowing you to put guard towers up. I personally think they look out of place especially when you mix it with a real city wall like shown below (which I think looks fantastic btw). I really hope this isnt the default for every race. I plan on playing an evil channler most of the time and dont think neatly pruined hedges would fit into my city themes. Just my 2 cents..What do you all think? Agree or disagree?

Happy Friday everyone!

Wait, you mean hedge walls aren't real walls?  Among other things, they would provide for a patrol space outside the city.

Just because it's not Minas Tirith doesn't mean it's nothing at all.

No, there real and I understand that some people may like them. I'm just saying I think they will look out of place for every single race. I hope it's an option more than anything.

Maybe it allows you to recruit the Knights of Ni.

I like them because it defines the town area.  Perhaps they provide minimal protection from wandering bandits.  Probably they are something that can be upgraded to stone, then add various towers, moats, bridges, porticullus, and so forth.

I disagree that evil channelers could not use hedge walls: imagine the Grey Willow of LOTR, but wrapped around your city!

This thread suggests an interesting topic.  How many different types of walls are there?  It would be fun (and maybe not that hard to program?) if many wall types were available -each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

Suggestions?

-Wall of ice-need certain climate changing spells

Wall of fire-need certain climate changing spells

-living walls- evil but can regenerate from any damage

-hedge wall- keeps people from seeing what you are doing in your back yard.

-wood wall- strong but burnable

-magic energy wall- until broken, will not allow any magic users or magical beings to pass

-undead wall-will keep those zombies out.

-chain linked fence- will keep tax collectors out.

moat -could be various kinds-keep heavy armor out

barbwire- keep horses and other beasts out

picket fence-keeps hoards of small dogs out.

anyway- the type of wall available will no doubt be linked to certain technologies and spells.

could be fun.

I dont mind that their hedge walls if they can be upgraded. If that is the case...the above picture suggests that you can have multiple upgradable walls? That would actually be tight...

I am for hedge walls as they allow for nude sunbathing of the wenches! :')

Defensive hedges don't look like that. They can grow so thick it is impossible to move through them. Not to mention some of them can have thorns.

Imagine trying to attack through a super dense rose bush 10 feet high and twice as wide.

That would be neat yeah. You could even modify the terrain and walls for defensive gain.

It might prevent someone from sneaking in, but you could most likely light a fire under it and then a half hour later its gone. Unlike a wooden wall you cant stand on top and throw things down on people.

That would be what the towers are for :pout:

About burning the hedges..  That would really only work if you were able to douse the whole thing with propellent or they are dried out.. Living plant matter is difficult to burn, a simple torch wouldn't do it.

Secondly, I seem to remember someone, Boogie maybe? Telling us that the walls upgrade on their own as your city expands.

Happy Friday everyone!

aww, but I wanted to have a depressing Friday.  Now I feel obligated to try to make it happy.

(actually I just participated in a chili cook-off which I enjoyed very greatly, though I'm avoiding all elevators and other closed spaces that might hold other people from the cook-off)

I do recall somebody saying the walls upgraded.  I figured the hedges would be replaced with other kinds of walls once appropriate.  It would make sense, however, that the outside limits of a town were marked with other boundries rather than hedges.  Evil races might had dead hedges, or snow mounds (if they are that chilling frozen-levels of dante's inferno kind of evil).  I could see just generic wooden fences over hedges for most non-plant-loving cizilizations.

However, I do think the hedges look very silly to wrap around watch towers like that if not for a defensive bonus.  Surely these hedges serve a purpose (maybe in every screenshot they've accidently applied the same wrong texture, and they actually should be grey; i.e. stone)

Here are some pics of the kind of 'default' fences I'd expect even primitive civilizations to build

Upgraded fences I'd expect to relate to the civilization or soverign.  Evil civs/wizards would have scary bone or spiky fences or walls, where good ones might have something like hedges.

Maybe it allows you to recruit the Knights of Ni.

No, they live in forests.  They just happened to be building a hedge of their own.  And they had a little path down the middle.   Actually, they were building shrubbary, with a little white fence.  That isn't related at all.

Now, now.... let's not relive "nipplegate" yet again......

nipple... gate?   Is that like a stargate but across nipples rather than stars? (I'd expect a porno to be named that)  To what does this name refer, and when was it dubbed that name?

I really hope they don't lock evil civs/wizards into having bony/spiky/scary everything. Let me choose what my shit looks like - not all evil is Sauron.

Lol  Did you just eat everyone's chili or did you actually submit a recipe? If so, did you end up placing?

Yes, I was referring to your little ESRB-bash. The name was actually created (by David Letterman possibly, but I don't know for sure) to describe the Janet Jackson Wardrobe Malfunction mess: a fusion of "nipple" due to the........ erm......... subject matter, and the Watergate scandal, due to the epically scandalous nature (at the time. Now, obviously, nobody cares). I simply reapplied it.

One thing that springs immediately to mind is a wall made of giant ribs sticking up from the ground. However, black stone, curtains of darkness, a solid wall of (dragon?) flesh and reaching undead arms+hands protruding from the earth also seem like something they would be into. It all depends on the technical/magical capabilitiers and specific "brand" of the faction involved, though.

Let's not leave the willies to suffer trapped in prudish textiles when the ta-tas are free. Nekkidphobia is an equal-opportunity gender oppressor.

About three hairs more 'seriously,' Denryu, if you're still occasionally thinking about amateur polling projects, the Watergate-less posts about nipplegate make me wonder how many of our younger cohort know how -gate came to be a suffix implying scandal. You can get a bachelor's these days without taking a single real history or civics class, so who knows...

You are vastly underestimating the effort it takes to burn down green plants. Setting them on fire is easy with the right fuel. But a rose bush 10 feet tall and 20 feet wide contains a lot of water and it will burn (but mostly steam) for hours and hours before a safe passage opens up that is big enough for a person to walk through.

Alternately you could make the rose bush 1 foot tall and 60 feet wide. Even harder to cross and nowhere to hide! *_*

Although that might deter cavalry and weaker units, if your legs are covetred in armor it won't be too big of a deal. Might slow you down a bit, but in the end you could wade through it w/o damage. I would say that a bush needs to be at least 4 feet tall to have any universal "stopping" power.

Dude, the real problem is that simple nudity isn't about sex, it's about comfort and/or practicality. But an idea like that is a 'scandal' to many in the US because we have a good does of Puritanism in our national history and our modern consumer culture depends on oversexualizing nearly everything to keep us spending as impulsively as possible.

To step back towards the OP, I live in North Florida and can testify first-hand about how tough a hedge-like growth can be to move through, especially if the plants are well-watered. (We have regular drought cycles here, so sometimes even a massive rose hedge would be a tinderbox unless someone had put constant work into watering it.)

Mainly, though, I'm now really hoping to see a Wall of Thorns spell that could grow a fine hedgerow around any site a channeler wanted to protect, given sufficient mana.

However, the vast majority of people do assosciate nudty with sex, and sex with nudity. I HIGHLY doubt that Denryu had the women's comfort in mind when (s)he derailed the thread, and considering some 8,000 years of tradition, I would say that, yes, it was derailed by sex.
