Hedge walls

Hedge walls

What's up with the hedge walls? They dont provide any bonus aside from allowing you to put guard towers up. I personally think they look out of place especially when you mix it with a real city wall like shown below (which I think looks fantastic btw). I really hope this isnt the default for every race. I plan on playing an evil channler most of the time and dont think neatly pruined hedges would fit into my city themes. Just my 2 cents..What do you all think? Agree or disagree?

Happy Friday everyone!

Alternately you could make the rose bush 1 foot tall and 60 feet wide. Even harder to cross and nowhere to hide!
Although that might deter cavalry and weaker units, if your legs are covetred in armor it won't be too big of a deal. Might slow you down a bit, but in the end you could wade through it w/o damage. I would say that a bush needs to be at least 4 feet tall to have any universal "stopping" power.

True, but even with steel plated boots there is no way you can maintain any sort of speed going over what is essentially a 60 foot wide patch of razor wire. New rose vines are no problem. But old rose bushes are new green growth on top of later upon layer of dried out older vines which are much harder and less prone to damage. This is while carrying 60 pounds or more of equipment (assuming heavy armour). Not to mention a shield to protect yourself from the arrows that are probably falling on you already.

It would be interesting to see this kind of thing pop up on battefields. If you have nothing else deploying your troops behind thorny hedges or magicking up a hedge in front of the enemy army could get interesting.

Dude, the real problem is that simple nudity isn't about sex, it's about comfort and/or practicality.
However, the vast majority of people do assosciate nudty with sex, and sex with nudity. I HIGHLY doubt that Denryu had the women's comfort in mind when (s)he derailed the thread, and considering some 8,000 years of tradition, I would say that, yes, it was derailed by sex.

Only the vast majority of Americans think sex when they see nudity. In many other places nudity is nothing out of the ordinary and they actually think..GASP...violence is worse.

Then again, in the places where the game will be sold nudity is associated with sex, so that argument is made of fail.

"sunbathing" is all about comfort.   If he wasn't thinking about their comfort he would have said something else like "hedges allow for the over exposure of sun to naked wenches"    Personally, I think about comfort and how it relates to sex all the time.

A "wall of hedges" spell seems neat in concept, and I do appriciate just how difficult it is to move through a healthy hedge.  But when you consider that the enemies that will WANT to move through these hedges will likely have swords  and axes (sharp sword vs. bush is pretty one sided) I don't see how they could be a valuable protection.  (unless  the hedge was alive in a haunted-forest or man-eating-rose-bush kind of way)

... over exposure of sun to naked wenches ...

I still kinda hope we can 'look up' in Elemental and see stuff in the game sky. You just made the Sun blush there.

Double-entendres aside, strong hedges can take decades to mature and when they are composed well as a barrier to animals, you'll need to do a lot of blade-sharpening on your way through them. That machete path-clearning stuff you see in a lot of film & video is mostly through very watery plants, not the woody vines and other stuff that would be part of a good hedge.

And now I definitely want a tactical-magic cousin to Wall of Thorns, Field of Thorns. Spill enough blood on it, and the roses will be extra-lovely (that's a gardening thing, not a dark magic thing, although mixing them up could be fun for the game).

I agree GW, we have an old rose bush in our yard that the base is a woody trunk 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Swords really are not designed for hacking your way through a hedge made up of such plants - halberds and hand axes might do a good job of it, but I would not want to even hack down that single bush with one of my many swords. It would be a real chore, and a thick wall of such bushes would indeed cause a significant hindrance imho

I concour: considering that it took my mother 20 minuts to cut down a single 3-inch-diameter trunk/stem(when, exactly, does a stem become a trunk) using a CHAINSAW, I could definately see a hedge causing a LOT of trouble, even for an axeman, especially since the thing my mom had to remove was just a dead trunk that had long since lost its branches, while a potential assilant would have to get through feet of extra wood.

That absurdity is their problem, not ours.  Sex isn't required for nudity, and nudity isn't required for sex.  The automatic association is extremely unhealthy.  I can vaguely recall reading about several trumped up child abuse cases based on the silliest of things simply because a parent had to 'deal with' a problem their child developed in 'private' places.

One great way to use the bushes is to dig a dry moat and grow a thorny bush inside it. It offers no cover to an attacking force. Can't be chopped down out of the way. And even if you burn the bush out you still have to wait for the wall of fire to subside before navigating the trench.

If you want to be an evil jerk about the whole thing you could put metal spikes on the bottom before growing the hedge on top of it.

If you wanted to be eviller about it, you could grow the hedge up OVER the pit and make it come ot over the side like this:

  •                           ____________
  •                          /hedgehedge\
  • groundgroundgroundIhedgeIground
  • groundgroundgroundIhedgeIground

The bad guys try to wade through the "low" hedge, only to fall into the thorny depths below!

And, if they DO burn down the hedge. The spikes will probably be burning hot o_O

The fate of hedge walls will rest with the beta testers. :)

Don't underestimate the hedges. They gave a load of trouble to the Allies in the european theater of war. If a hedge can stall a tank it is no laughing matter. Once you outfitted a tank with a bulldozer or flail they weren't a problem but that level of tech won't be making an appearance in Elemental.

hear that people? Hedge walls or bust! ;P

I think simple "hinderance" walls like this will be of great value at a tactical level. Have any of you played company of heroes? In the beginning of the game you have only basic infantry and no vehicles. One line of razor wire across the bridge to your riflemen might as well be the great wall of china to a segway. Only late in the game when you get engineers with wirecutters, demolition charges and vehicles razor wire loses its importance.

Good news! :congrat: I will reserve judgement until Beta and see how they fit in.
