Crashing, freezing, artifacts, multiplayer etc. (XP x64 suspected)

Crashing, freezing, artifacts, multiplayer etc. (XP x64 suspected)

The main menu and some other screens(not the game itself, though) some times will suffer from artifacts and other minor graphics glitches. This is the only game I have that experiences this sort of behaviour, and I'm reasonably sure it's not my GPU.

Secondly, the game will freeze up in various loading screens randomly. I'd play one battle great, start loading the next one and there it would freeze. Program becomes unresponsive, has to be closed with the task manager.

Thirdly, in the middle of the game it sometimes crashes to desktop with an error message I forgot to copy. I would say this is more rare than the previously mentioned freeze, but as it arrives after the place where it can freeze, that would be a false statistic.

Finally, I'm yet to join a multiplayer game. Tried dozens of times, and it either hangs or finds nothing for over an hour of waiting, or several times of cancelling after nothing comes up or joins in 10 minutes, as the game has no unresponsive autokick.

I have the latest version of the game, motherboard drivers, GPU drivers and have tried with Impulse both on and off. No other games I have experience this sort of behavious, and I have a lot of games. I'm 96% sure it's not my box that's at fault.

In case you want to know, it's a Q6600, with a 512 MB GeForce 8800GTS, 4 gigs of RAM and it's all running on Windows XP x64 Professional.

HALP!

I have checked and have been told that the game is only supported on 32 bit XP, 32 & 64 bit Windows Vista and 32 and 64 bit Windows 7 (once Windows 7 is released - not on betas)

So does that mean you wont help us? Should I give up and ask for a refund?

Well, my problems have diminished from once every two games or so to very rarely, which is good.  But I also feel kind of uncomfortable knowing that the game could break at any time because you've inexplicably chosen not to support the best OS in existence for gaming machines.

So you're leaving people like me with the choice to either try to get a refund (if it will even be allowed) and thus unable to play, or to be able to play but have to deal with the fact that any given day you may patch the game causing it to no longer work on xp64 leaving us out our $40.

I...can't even believe this. I really can't. Looking at the back of the box "Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1". SP3 only eh? So that's why 64 bit isn't supported; if you don't have SP3, can't run it, and there is no SP3 for 64 bit XP, and never will be. I'm really not sure who to blame more for this, Stardock, Microsoft, or myself for not knowing this undoubtedly little known idiocyncrasy of XP. I haven't been this angry since Fallout 3 ending, and I was raging then. What little I got to play of this game, I loved. After I post this I am going to get a refund, and probably will never buy another game from this company. Utterly disappointed.

If that's your attitude you are setting yourself up for disappointment after disappointment.  You are running an OS that was barely ever supported to begin with.  Even Microsoft doesn't want to support it.  There is no major game company that I am aware of that officially supports XP 64-bit.  It's always been, "if it works for you, great.  If not, we don't support it."  If you want 64-bit, Vista or Windows 7 is your migration path.

Incidentally, most people choose their OS based on the applications they want to run, not the other way around.

been fine for years and have essentially a library of modern games. first time i've run into a game crippling bug due to lack of support for OS. your prophecy is innacurate.

I have been advised that you should contact [email protected] and request a refund if you are having issues on XP 64 bit Edition.

That OS isn't a supported one and the website will be updated to make this clear.  For the box apparently there is no space in the GFW design to indicate that XP 64 bit Edition is unsupported.

Actually any game that had a 64 bit edition prior to the release of vista (hint, more than you'd think) supported xp64.  Vista is a bloated pile of crap and I would rather not sacrifice half my ram to downgrade to 32 bit xp.  Ive run it for two years now and this is the first game which has ever had the slightest problem.  Hell, this is the first time I've ever actually seen a company dumb enough to produce a game and then say they won't suport xp64.  "What?  You want to give us your money, but you've foolishly chosen to run the best available modern OS?  Supporting it would require a modicum of extra effort on our part and actually help protect our already fragile business image, whyever would we want to do that?"

Neil, thanks for your help.  Unfortunately out of three games today, two have crashed less than 10 minutes in, and I'm fed up with it.  If you know who's responsible for deciding to not support xp64, feel free to tell him that I think he's a dumbass.  Thanks.  ;)

Having the same problem ... only in multiplayer when joining games (even when I don't alt-tab) ... running Vista x64 w/ core i7 / nvidia gtx 260

I run XP 32 bit, and get most of the same issues - with the excetion of CTD during a game (if i dont alt-tab etc).

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with 64bit operating systems.

well I have the exact same issues and I am on good old xp home so this issue seems to affect all system types and on top of that it affect both single and multiplayer games, I cant play this game at all, I play all other games with ease

I run x64 bit Vista and I have crash issues occassionally. Of course, my laptop isn't the best thing in the world.

Hate to bump an old thread.

Was there ever any turnout? Cause im still having these same

"EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at address 0x008079c8    attempted to read memory at 0x0000002c" ...problems.

Stardock never turned out to support x64 and we should refund it?

chaoticns - necro as needed :)

I'm actually running on windows 7 64 bit without any issues.  I've had crashes in the past and have pretty much resolved them.

Do you play SP only or MP as well?  In my experience, SP never crashed.  I tracked my problem down to being MP specific, as strange as it sounds, and was able to resolve it by trying a variety of networking tweaks/changes, which I'd be happy to share with you - BUT, i need to know if you are stable in SP or not.
