Stardock Releases Fences, Application to Solve Cluttered Desktops

Stardock is excited to announce its most innovative desktop utility application since the popular WindowBlinds today – Stardock Fences for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. The free application from Stardock clears desktop clutter and provides consistency and organization for groups of files on the desktop. Fences allows users to literally “draw” labeled shaded areas on the desktop which become movable & resizable “containers” for desktop icons. These groups arrange and hide the files on the computer's desktop solving the "constant mess" problem that has plagued the desktop since its inception.

To help solve another weak point of the desktop - the mere appearance of clutter, Fences offers a novel quick-hide feature. Users can double click the desktop and all of the icons will fade out. When users double click again the icons will return. Users can pick and choose which desktop icons hide when the feature is activated.

after trying this out, all my messy icons are within specific parameters on the desktop. and i can get to each one with ease. i hope to continue using the free version for another 2 years. :CONGRAT:

I've been using Fences for a little while now and I must say it's one of my favorite apps for Windows so far. Really great way for increasing productivity and reducing clutter.

The funny part about this is....the guy that wrote the software to get your icons "off" your screen...now wants to put them back "on" your screen. Will someone please get Jeff his meds script filled! :LOL:

I've been waiting for something like this for a really long time. I switch between 1900x1200 and 1280x720 all of the time (monitor, TV) and I've been stuck with leaving my icons arranged for the lowest common denominator, the TV. That means I get everything bunched up in upper-right when I switch to 1900x1200. Not anymore! When I switch to the lower resolution my Fences just shrink. I don't care about my desktop icons when I'm on the TV anyway so they can get mushed up but when I switch back to my monitor everything is back where I want it. Awesome program! I would definitely buy it when it comes out of beta.

This is great, expecially for all those people who use icon on the desktop like crazy (I know allot of people who are desktop icon crazy). I may actually put desktop icons back on my desktop just to use this LOL I know my Dell mini could use this app... just hope it doesn't take up too much resources. I have windowblinds, keepsafe, and virtual desktops running on my 8.5 inch screen to keep things in order but I already have all sorts of other services running... I haven't had any problems with batteries yet... Anyway, this sounds like something I could add to make it easier to work with my screenspace. By the way, is this designed using DesktopX or just using VB and c++??? Just wondering cause I could easily see this being a DesktopX type desktop

I installed this from the link provided...now I go into Impulse and see there is an update but it won't let me install it due to registration blah blah blah. Did I miss something, will I have to buy this separately? Is this not a Object Desk product like CursorFX and Object Dock?

Fences is quite a nice idea. Unfortunately it's not useful to me at the moment since I keep the desktop clear of icons by using ObjectDock Plus. By the way, folks who keep a lot of data on the desktop (Vs "shortcuts" to data) should make sure the desktop folder is included in their backups. By default many backup programs don't include the desktop.

Congrats guys, though I use a Dock as well to keep it neat, so I'd never use it, but it looks awesome for those that have cluttered desktops hehe

I agree with Tailsgirl I use a docks and widgets and objects, I have only 4 icons on my desktop and I really do not need them. I also do not use Taskbar

I had little folders everywhere on my desktop and had to open the folder to work in that area. Now it has color and I can scroll down and leave it open.And not looking at a desktop full of folders is wonderful.I only wish I could use it and IconX at the same time. This will be a time saver for me.I LOVE IT !

I use both Fences and ObjectDock on three monitors and they serve different needs for me. Love em both.
