Stardock Releases Fences, Application to Solve Cluttered Desktops

Organizes the desktop!

Stardock is excited to announce its most innovative desktop utility application since the popular WindowBlinds today – Stardock Fences for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. The free application from Stardock clears desktop clutter and provides consistency and organization for groups of files on the desktop. Fences allows users to literally “draw” labeled shaded areas on the desktop which become movable & resizable “containers” for desktop icons. These groups arrange and hide the files on the computer's desktop solving the "constant mess" problem that has plagued the desktop since its inception.

To help solve another weak point of the desktop - the mere appearance of clutter, Fences offers a novel quick-hide feature. Users can double click the desktop and all of the icons will fade out. When users double click again the icons will return. Users can pick and choose which desktop icons hide when the feature is activated.

Visit the Fences website to see more screenshots and videos of Fences in action, and for your free download.

Great Program. Programs like this one should of been out years ago. Now lets take Fences one step further, by allowing custom skins to be applied, kinda like ObjectDock. That's the next step. :)

How do I get it to auto-sort icons within a fence, instead of the mess it creates now with everything jumbled up? How do I get it to add new shortcuts etc into a default fence? I download to desktop by default so the above question again but saving downloads to a default fence? I use another app that uses double desktop click to open (Dopus) how can I change the default hide action within Fences to another combination? I did try and use Fences during the beta, but had issues and the questions above were ignored :( Formatting is FUBAR in these forums, the above should all be seperated :NOTSURE:

Very nice!!!! I was getting worried that Stardock had lost it's creativity! something I REALLY want to see added to this program: Fence as a symbolic link to another folder. This way you can still keep your files in a standard organized structure, but view them on your desktop easily. Would also LOVE to see a fence be a link to a remote store, such as FTP, SkyDrive, GDrive etc.

BeLGaRaTh67, JeremyG, thanks for the feedback.

Sorting at this point is by drag and drop.

This version does not support "auto-fencing"

This version doesn't support changing teh double-click.  Does Dopus?  Is that an option for now?

Yes when I double click the desktop Dopus opens up, as mentioned a different hot key for hiding in Fences would be ideal. Auto Fencing will be an option in the future? Not just for different filetypes etc (eg shortcuts) but for downloads or new additions on the desktop? I do actually like the fences program/idea, but in its current iteration it is just not as usable as I would lik it to be :(

Can you change teh hotkey for dopus?  Would that resolve teh issue for now?

I cannot change the hotkey for Dopus, as I have requested within the support before, but been ignored again in a sense, It is that as default, but I had to stop using Dreams etc as they also stopped me using Dopus and loading by Double Click. I was told by support to stop using dreams :/
