PiratesReally

I will never play again!

I will never play again!

Why have the game cheat????

It makes no sense to me.  Why program your game to allow the computer to cheat and destroy you on a whim with no way to prevent it?

I spent DAYS!!!!!!!!  building my empire.  Literally, DAYS!  Not in game days, real life DAYS!  For nothing!!!

These space pirates come from no where and are totally unstoppable.  I had great units, large ships that took a long time to build.  No other race could touch me except the humans, and they were not much of a threat.  And then POOF!!  Pirates!!!  Mostly indestuctable pirates that go through and systematiclly destroy all of my high tech Large vessels with the kind of technology that pirates would have.

How do pirates have the best ships in the game?????

This completly ruined my experience with what I thought was a fun fair game.  But it's not fair.  Not even close.  It's like taking a can of spray paint, and spraying green paint on a picture someone took months to paint.

Lets see,,,,,,, player is doing well, not massively over powered or anything, but can put up a fight with everyone else, he has many ships defending his turf, everything seems fine.  Lets throw in unlimited numbers of almost indestructable pirates whose only purpose seems to be to ruin my game.  Great idea!!!

I can handle getting beat by a race that I am actually playing against, but from pirates that I had no idea were even in the game, that use ships twice as powerful as anything I can make, and allow them to destroy EVERY SINGLE SHIP I HAVE!!!!   Oh and all 12 of my halfway completed starbases too.

There was no stopping them.  Nothing I did had any effect.  NOTHING!!!  All I could do is watch as they killed everything.  I build a ship, send it to defend a planet, pirates come from nowhere and destroy it.  Build a trade ship and send it away, destroyed by pirates before it gets 2 sectors away.  My game was over, the pirates won.

I don't want to play a game where all I do is click the turn button over and over again while nothing happens.  That was all I could do.

End my turn, end my turn, end my turn, end my turn, Ohh, ship built!!, Send it to planet,,,Boom,,,, End my turn, end my trun, end my turn.

Again,if it was the filthy humans or something, I would be ok with that, they are a seen force that I thought had the same rules and resourses that I did, and none more.  I can lose against that no problem.  I see how you can claim your game's AI has to use the same resources that you do.  But you fail to mention the pirates not heeding those same rules you applied to the other parts of the AI.  You should have claimed that only the actual species have these resrictions, and that Pirates can do what ever they want, need no resourses, need no money, and no research, and can't be stopped.

I know I would not have bought your game knowing Pirates would always win.

Why have a cheating enity that ruins all mid to late games??

I feel no reason to play, no matter what I do, at some point these pirates will come into my game and kill everything I have and not allow me to build any ships, have any trade routes, or star bases.

What is the point of playing against an unstoppable force??????

It's pointless.

Game is un-installed

If you can match his attack with an equal amount of defenses, you're almost indestructable.  Much beyond that isn't necessary, though it can help prevent bad rolls-to an extent.  The 75% rule is in place because apart from early game, that's rarely achievable.

You're better off with 1/4 then with 2/3 against a 4/0. However, you're better off with a 2/4 than with a 1/5, again against a 4/0. Make sense?

Gotcha.  Basically, attack leads, defense follows.

So, whilst you are accurate in quoting Wikipedia, and Wikipedia is doubtless correct in quoting Clarke, I think there was more to it than that. I think they "done it on purpose!"

In five years it will be illegal to not believe a wiki.

That's not what I said at all, no.

Against X/Y, the ideal setup is Z/X.  Put as much defense on as you can, until you reach the fleet attack value.  Then fill it out with weapons.

Sorry.  What I meant by that was it does little good to have your Defense ahead of their Attack.  So follow their Attack rating with your Defense rating.

I had to take them on with minimum weapons and defenses and beat them.

The only one I really dislike (And will sometimes reload to avoid) is Jagged knife - I think because I take the concept of some ridiculous number of my planets just rebelling for no good reason personally - {G}.

Other than that - I rather like a sudden influx of pirates. I run a rather peaceful game, keeps me on my toes. Of course, most times it's happened to me, it's been early on and I could take time, out research them, build me some pirate killers and then take every resource in the game - {G}.

It would *suck* in the late game - {G}.

Have you ever been hit by the speed limit event, Jonnan?

hairless, that makes sense.  I don't know why I didn't read it that way.

Good to see you cooled down and are going to give it another shot Pirate.  It sounds like you're economic infrastructure needs some work, Either you need to rethink how you build up your planets, or you need to focus on some more economic techs to get as well as higher forms of government.

Like others have said, when countering the pirates, using def techs that directly counter their weapons, and getting weapons they dont have def against is key.  Makes quick and easy work of them in the end.  But you need the income to handle it.

Keep playing and with time, you'll figure out the small details to the games mechanics and you'll have an easier time with crazy things like this.  The forums are a good resource for info too, some of these guys have crazy insight into the game.

I have to say, the 'no you b*****d!' quality in GalCiv has to be one of the main factors of why its such a good game.  I leave mega events on always.  In the end, most games are always winnable once you find a particular strategy and you can keep on winning time after time.  In the end, I like strategy games to require exactly that - strategy!  And the best strategy is the one that can be altered if the circumstances change.  I can name several games I just stopped playing because they simply became boring.  Not because they weren't good games, but because they were so easy to win doing the same thing that every time you played it was the same.

Kudos to PirateReally for coming back to the forums and actually reading other people's comments.  I must admit that when I first read this thread I assumed that it was another rant and run post (which you get on the forums of pretty much every game ever made).  Not the case here.

Hello

@ Piratesreally I had those  Pirates in my first turn then I started over then I got 5/pc event during planet rush phase in the largest map (Immense) but I played anyway because I had good planet bonuses and good map poisition so what if it took ( 7,300 turn clicks?) <_< 20 years to win I had fun watching all ships move like snails across the map. So don't give up and ask questions

By the way are you in a empire? :ninja: Keep an eye on my empire Adepta Sororitas (rank # 12 in AltMeta) rank # 41 third page, next two days it will be rank # 30 somthing second page. My goal is to be in the top 20 in three months or less. I'm a Newbie that submitted 72,800 score and my next score, I want to break 100,000 then 1,000,000:dur:   I'm also working on Empire thread when I break 100,000 score and make the top 20 and then a website in the future

I can't say I have any deep abiding love for that one either, but compared to Jagged Knife? Like trying to measure a barge with tons of excrement using a precision lab scale - {G}.

Meh, in the first game I played pirates spawned and destroyed my military (even my swarm of elite small fighters ;_;), but they also wiped out the Arceans and their level 30 medium sized cruisers and what have you. After losing a lot of my new, large sized destroyers, I finally realised that armour is very important. I then switched my military from lasers to missiles, and added lots of deflectors (my pirates were using lasers and deflectors), and then completely wiped them out, as well as all my rivals. Note that they don't have transports and so can't severely weaken you by taking your planets! Hehe~

Okay, you guys are nice, but you are not explaining things well.

The OP seems to think that the Pirates are a normal part of gameplay.  The rest of you seem to just assume he should know this and don't bother to explain it directly and clearly.

The Pirates are NOT a normal part of the game.  As a matter of fact, I have never encountered them.  They are a part of Mega Event, which is an optional part of the game that you select when you start a new game.  The game even warns you somewhere that Mega Events can drastically alter the ballance of the game in unexpected ways.  You have just learned what that means.

Mega events are all like this, they are powerful, unexpected, and introduce a drastic challenge.  For a beginner player who hasn't played a lot of similar kind of game, they should be turned off.

Even so, it is possible to deal with every Mega Event, you just have to alter your strategies and way of thinking about the game.

As for the loss of the trade income, considering that all of your ships are going up in smoke, you should be saving a bundle on ship maintenance.  Besides, you shouldn't need your ships for a while--all the other players are in the same boat as you.  Instead, figure out ways to exploit the situation.

I've only just started playing the game and tbh I think working out what to do would be mostly common sense.

I agree.  Additionally, let's remember that this is just a game.  No reason to get so upset about it as the OP seems to have done.

I wonder if there are any mods that change (re-balance) mega events. Or is it possible to easily disable some of the extreme events that can destroy a "picture someone took months to paint".

No, and no.

Hard code problem, IIRC.

In the first Gal Civ I actually had  my butt saved playing as 'Good' humans when a religious event caused over half of the powerful Drengin empire to revolt and convert.

I enjoy the Mega events, and they add a story type element to the gameplay, as well as throwing in an extra challenge. I even had the Jagged Knife event and still won an influence victory despite losing a third of my systems - just as well minor races dont have influence zones!

Pirates are survivable, Jagged Knife can be interesting, Peacekeeprers are a pain in the backside, but what what really gets my goat is after struggling to get peace throughout the Immense Galaxy and be at 70% for an influence victory to have some race that is almost of equal military size declare war for the flimsiest reason. Talk about frustrating, time consuming, and generally bad for business that happened not once but 3 times in my last game...then just when I thought everything was finally coming together just great along comes the Jagged Knife and bam I am suddenly out 28 planets and down to less than 40% influence AGAIN! Took me almost 5 days of playing to finally accept a diplomatic victory...UGH! But I will be back playing again in just a few hours after I get some sleep and food in my HUNGERY body. What can I say I am a glutton for punishement.

i was in luck when the jagged knife event appeared since i had troop transports on many of my planets that were occupied.they didnt even manage to build ships before i managed to get mine back and some of the other planets
