Now maybe I am getting too cynical about SNL but...

did Eminem just lip synch Mosh?

I was just watching Eminem perform Mosh on SNL.... and it sounded WAY too close to the video version. I mean, it was almost exactly the same as what was on the video, and at one point I could have sworn he pulled the mike away from his mouth, and he was still singing(it might have been his own backing vocal though). I can't prove it conclusively, but it looked like he was.

The irony is that SNL has been really ripping into Ashlee Simpson all show.... and if he did lip synch, well, it makes them look even worse.

I don't think you're getting cynical, historyishere. I think it's just the way entertainment has become.

I wish the media were aggressive regarding lip-synching because maybe there won't be an acceptance of it. However, the music industry has come to rely on image, not the quality of the product. In order to protect their investments, lip-synching has to be done. Just my speculation...

Good post.

I can remember watching American Bandstand and trying to see which artists were lip synching. (Most) But we always got mad when they did.
I don't care enough about Eminem to tell whether he was using a backing track on his second number. The second portion of the song it didn't seem like it.

Here was my thought process as it played out.... since there was only one other guy on stage playing the backing music, and I started thinking about how much easier it would be just to play the track from the album from that rig and lip synch over it. Of course, I gave him the benefit of the doubt... but it seemed increasingly apparent that he was probably doing just as a thought on Mosh which is a lot more disappointing than Ashlee Simpson doing it.

I mean, come on... he doesn't even have to SING... he just had to recite the lyrics.

Hmmm . . . I haven't seen it yet, but I'll look for that.

BTW . . . what do you think about Mosh?

I like the song(politics or no politics, because its got a great beat on it), and the fact that they did an animated video in about 5 weeks is pretty cool too. Politically, I am surprised that he wrote a song like it though.... it might be me being naive, but I didn't think he was that political.

Yeah, I tend to like Eminem too, though I'll probably go to hell for it. The video was amazing. I really liked it. I think a lot of people who didn't concern themselves with politics before have become polarized by world events and this election.

Personally, it doesn't really piss me off when celebrities talk politics. I realize they're spoiled brats and not foreign policy experts, and what they have to say doesn't affect my opinions . . . but . . . if I were a celebrity and had the attention of millions of people, I'd probably use it to express my views, too. How can I fault someone for that?

To paraphrase an oft-mentioned cliche.... Political views are like assholes... everyone's got them. I can't fault celebrities for having both. That being said, I can understand how some people don't want to feel like they are being proselytized when they see someone in concert... but at the same time, since politics are such an integral part of a person's personality, it is sometimes hard to separate that part from the rest. Politics is one of those highly-passionate things that helps produce both a lot of grief and sometimes some really good work artistically.

You have a point with that one . . . hmmm . . . it doesn't bother me when they speak out in acceptance speeches or when they hold little political events or what have you, but at a concert that I paid good money for, I think that would piss me off. I kind of think that people that gripe so much about celebrities and politics only gripe because they don't agree with the politics. Those that bitch about the Dixie Chicks cheer Tobey Keith on, and vice versa.

I agree.

*Sorry for taking this so far off topic, history*

Its ok Texas... I'll just swing it back onto topic here

You can't really lip synch a political rant on stage, so you know you are getting an honest performance there. It's lip synching at these shows which should be the real outrage, not the fact that an artist expresses political views.

If Eminem indeed did lip synch tonight, I think that should seriously affect his reputation as a "live" performer.

D'oh! I fell asleep and missed his Mosh performance. I woke up near the beginning of Weekend Update. I can't believe I did that.

I saw it, and I said that it was probably the worst Eminem performance I had seen to date.   It was obvious he was using a teleprompter, and I could have sworn that he took the mike away from his mouth, stopped moving his lips..... but miraculously kept singing anyway.

Hmm......I'm going to paying closer attention to the SNL musical guests in the future.

ViVa La Dixie Chicks!!!!.....lol

Least Nat had the juevos to speak out. If she did the same thing now, do you think the reaction would be the same? Probably not.

I doubt either of the past two performers will appear on any SNL DVD material in the future. I guess he felt like he could just phone it in.

I think that you are right about that. Its all a matter of timing... then again, she might have made it easier for other artists to come out against Bush today.

It might end up online at someplace like MTV.

I mean I knew you were old, but sheeeeesh. Did you see the one where Jerry Lee Lewis came on and set the piano on fire?

I like Eminem, even if he does lip-sync and does get political (this isn't the first time actually, now that I remember Square Dance on The Eminem Show).

Perhaps the audience in SNL needs to stop being so polite booing if SNL keeps screwing them over with prerecorded performances.

Now I'm trying to remember if the New Kids on the Block lip-synced at their concert.

Or the one where Dick Clark destroyed Philly in a rampage of radioactive breath and fought Mothra....

wait... that was a Godzilla movie... or Dick Cheney.... I can't remember which.....

I never catch SNL, but I did last night and I saw the same thing! I definately think he was lip synching and I thought the same thing but just blew it off....I guess I wasn't the only one

And now Lorne Michaels is saying that lip-synching is not a common practice for SNL, when it is looking increasingly like it is. Shameful really.

Maybe that was the hope... because this case doesn't seem to be receiving much coverage in the press. We'll see if anyone is talking about this tomorrow though.

Very, very simple. Can't stand the guy. See how easy that was?

I am a fan of Em. I hate Mosh. I think that it is a very charged attack from someone who hasn't taken time to look at all of the facts. That said...

If you go back and look at the performance, he is not lip synching. In his "Music" he traditionally raps over his background tracks. 80%+ of his music is recorded this way. He took the mic away from his mouth several times in that performance with words still comming out of the speakers. But, when the mic is up you can clearly hear 2 voices.
