More GalCiv II v2.0 stuff

Played a lot of GalCiv II v2.0 today.  Other than the issue that the lighting is not working right on my Thinkpad T400 (there's no shadows on planets) it's working pretty well.  The ThinkPad T400 ATI display driver randomly crashes when I play games which is a bit of a bummer too but that's not game related.

One feature that I've concluded we should put in is to let people set the pacing of research any time they want within game.  In a single player game, if I want techs to come faster, I should be able to do that. It's not cheating as it affects all players equally.

I figure we can set it to be 0.25 to 5 of whatever setting players have set at the start of the game and it resets each game.

Another thing I've concluded is that 2.0 isn't the end of the line. I know whenever I play it I'll have the debugger open making tweaks for each game.

Well... ifin it ain't the end of the line yet, hows about we talk abit about maps. Ya see my spies seem to think they can git copies of sombody elses maps and expand my knowledge of the known universe, but ya'll just won't let em send it my way. hint hint..and my ambassadors tell me they think that maybe they could sweet talk them there maps outta them alien map rooms if only you'd let me throw some credits around. Just a little sumthin ta ponder while yer tinkerin about with yer bug killin tweanky thingamabob. Tanks fer yer consideration on this here point.

2.0 isn't the end of the line...

Any other 'enhancements' (new features or corrections) in further minor versions should be expected *until* you & us are completely satisfied with the gameplay state.

There are small (or more complex) issues still to fix in a number of areas (beta testers and regular players will always suggest much of what possibly needs to done - if that is followed up by coders or deemed feasible for stability & what else)... fine-tuning, complete overhaul of specifics.

If you have monitored our concerns carefully, our most important *wishes* should be answered -- eventually.

GC3 might very well become a different product, in the meantime... versions 2.??? can only add values to an already solid game.

Although, perfection will never be achieved. Don't try. Too many variables & personal opinions.

Nothing stops Stardock from KEEPING their fanbase (and precious customers, btw) happy with even more innovative ideas.

We (and I) simply trust you.

So..... 1.99.5(rc) - next week?

So if we have the game set at Very Fast research, we can up it to 5x that yet?

One thing I'm unaware of, the research settings, do they just adjust the number of RP needed for a tech?  And if so, then would this work just like that?

@Loup: Yes, it affects the cost. There is a multiplier depending on the speed you pick at start.  Normal is 100% of cost (so whatever the cost would be listed as in the tech tree, ie 100), I haven't looked at the numbers exactly but I think Very Fast is about 60% of cost, and I have no idea on Very Slow (because I've never played at the speed outside of maybe a MVL game)

No disrespect, but this is effectively a call for a permanent crew that will simply change its name to GC3 at some point. I don't reject the idea out of hand, but I think that the game might gain a lot if Stardock really did stop all active work on it for at least a year. A game like this is similar in many ways to an essay or novel, and giving yourself a big break before doing a major series of edits/revisions is almost always a good idea. Fresh eyes and all that...

It's goig to be awhile before there's a GalCiv III.  First we have to do the fantasy strategy game. Then we can look and see what to make after that.

But I will be tweaking GalCiv II for some time to come as I play it.

But there's so much I want to do in a GalCiv III that aren't in GalCiv II and really can't.  GalCiv III would be a very different animal than II.

The tweaks so far are !!!fantastic!!!. The only odd issues I have encountered are the Drengin and Korath. They both seem to have an aversion to colonizing. Of course, I have not played much since the TA Release, so this may be by design.

I am enjoying the game on a quad-core now, and can play in an immense galaxy with "everything" with almost No Crashes! I am also extremely happy (for a Snathi) about the Tech Brokering option, the Extreme Planets option, and the Random Events option.

Keep up the great work!

You wouldn't happen to have a top 10 list made already? You know, something you can show us (with a warning it would be subject to change for any reason), or is it too early for that?

Frogboy

Any chance that we might see some ground combat tweaks/updating? (seeing as Gal Civ 3) is a few years away) ?

*cough*

Not cheating to put research at 100% while increasing research speed, and put it at 0% while decreasing it?

*cough*

It is both micromanageable and abusable, that's the problem...

I do not find myself playing too much TA (two games, beta included, so far), but this attitude tells me, that my money was spent to the right guys.

Keep on going like that. I will buy GC3 wether I have time to play it or not. :)

By 2.0 and beyond, are we just talking about TA or are there future chnages to DA as well?

That would be a real kick in the stones for the AI if a player pulled this.

Once you've gotten all the techs youwant or need, you can effectively stop the AI from getting anymore techs. Say once I get the final weapon and defence techs and everything else I want and the AI is still far behind I can stop all research for everyone.

well, you'd be putting it at 25%, but the point still stands.

I may even consider purchasing the upcoming Fantasy title (Please give us a Journal log about current status and development progress, asap).

GCIII would be an Animal? :frogboy:

Oh, well... Hybrid stuff could open these 'concepts' soooo much, i highly doubt the SD team wouldn't gain enough but extremely good experience to actually fuse some Fantasy/TBS4X features together - for the best!

Which is risky. :andrew:

But, offers great (i'm being conservative with that term) gameplay perspectives.

In the meantime, any GC2 "fixes" should certainly fill up some needs; I sure want the Surface_Tiles/Image_Queries flaw issue resolved and could certainly use enhanced Editors while hoping about optional green & blue hardpoints in the ShipYard (external or not) interface!

:O Gee, i sure want me some of that red_eyed_glowing_nozy_squirrel fully drawn up at 256x256 png to use as a new gameplay default!

Heck... prove me that they (some AIs, btw) don't do it already - indirectly! :)

And so what?  It's still a single player game, the AI is hardly going to care if you "cheat".  Meanwhile, more options for the player is always a good thing IMO.

I sincerely hope this option will be disabled for Metaverse play.

But of course. As it is we are quickly approaching the physical limits of silicon. Gaming squids are the way of the future!
