See Sins Entrenchment In Action on X-Play

I can't wait to play this

Last night, Blair Fraser of Ironclad Games was on G4's X-Play talking up the upcoming Sins of a Solar Empire microexpansion; Entrenchment.  On the October 9th episode, they show off the first of three new Starbases, massive defensive platforms that will decimate all but the largest, most powerful fleets.

Watch the video below to get all of the details, and a peek at the game in action.

No bad at all. If I had to pick something to quibble over, it would be the host's comment "we could get it for free..." I think he should have chose his words more carefully. Maybe he should have said something along the lines of: Something unscrupulous people may chose to take. It is not a big point nor a sharp one but one nonetheless.

Yeah that was sketchy, but I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it.

Yeah. He ended the statement well enough however. Funny I always thought those type of interviews were rehearsed prior to broadcast. Silly me...

He was trying to complement IC for making a good game worth buying, despite the fact that no protections at all makes it easier to pirate.. that was just a weird way of doing it :P

Wow, I can't wait for this to come out. I wish that they had shown the other faction's starbases, too, though.

I'm glad they didn't, there's more to look forward to

The TEC Starbase seemed to fire with two of Kols lasers, but it does have more armaments, right? I hope they are armed to the teeth and then some. Also, those must be really expensive, and slow to build?

BTW, you do teach the AI to use them, don't you?

Don't worry, the starbase has plenty more goodies then just lasers. |-)

Watching the video I noticed something that Blair said and what the video was showing which I beleive alot of modders will love, however i dont know if it is true.

Blair said that the game went from a closed box to completely open, as in talking about the ability to build starbases everywhere, and that means I beleive that modders will be able to use this to actually do some of the things they wanted to do.

Another thing in the video, i could be crazy, but isnt there a had cap for the amount of visual point things for a weapon and that limit 10?  In the video, the starbase was shooting far more than from 10 points for the tech laser burst guns.  So does this go with what blair said of this making the game more open because you guys removed alot of the hard limits?

Oh, btw if im not making sense, im extremely tired from playing sins all night ^_^

Well its hard to speculate in any detail, but you can certainly have more than 10 guns on an in game object already whether or not you can fire 10+ simultaneously I can't honestly say.

The hardlimits are I would say helping the games developers keep to their design ethos of making the game accessable to lower-end hardware, so upgrade your bloody hardware u lot :borg:

What I was looking for visually was if the gun point on the Starbase showed any signs of pointing towards their target, but the video still shows the crazy 90 degree beam shots. The whole concept of the Starbase is a great idea and shows real improvement but please don't neglect the details IC & SD it adds so much to the overall immersion of a game.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i noticed that Blair made a comment about hangers with flak cannons :D   Does this mean we're going to be able to mod hangers with weapons not be limited to only hanger function? If thats the case...

Yep. That is exactly what I understood from his comments. He also said SB at stars to boot!

Will starbases have their own fighters and bombers which can be launched when under attack ?

I didn't think so at first (since there are hangers for that), but in the video you can clearly see some kind of opening at the top of the starbase. It's glowing green, however, so it may just be for decoration (or for something mind-blowingly awesome that hasn't been talked about yet).

I am looking forward to this new expansion as a way to further increase the enjoyment of Sins, as well as the possibilities for modding.  Can't wait until I can take full advantage of this expansion.

so is it just me or did anyone else notice those two different cylinder thnigies. one of them looked like a ship or a gun, and the other looked like something to be used for electronic warfare? and also did anybody notice in the opening scene thingy tht sort of thing tht looked like a reverse flatbed with fuel tanks on it? either im going crazy or thts some new stuff.

Lordhood, i saw what you saw, if you pause the clip at 16 sec, i see 3 different ships i have no clue what they are.  One does look like a flatbed with tanks on the side with engines on the back, another ship in the distance has a star destroyer look, as it has a triangle look to it, and theres a smaller ship that i havent seen before either, it could be a colony frigate, but theres multiple of it.

" had cap for the amount of visual point things for a weapon and that limit 10?"

The limit no longer exists for Starbases.

Cool. How about ships continuing to move while in combat? :')

The clip from 0:16 is from the teaser trailer released long ago. It was WAY before the betas came out.

That's just a clip from an outdated trailer:

Those ships are actually early designs that just didn't make it into the final game.

I think a lovely touch to the game (And a more realistic view on things) Would be fleet logistical support. Every fleet needs its oil tankers, ammunition ships and repair barges! When you upgrade your fleet cap, it takes a percentage away for 'fleet upkeep'. I think you should take this out alltogether, and make the player manualy do this. HAve him build tankers and ammunition ships and send them out in his fleets, or leave them stationed at planets as temporary 'repair stations'. I dont think making un-supported fleets run out of ammo, or fuel, is what should happen, more along the lines of:

A logistically supported fleet will gain advantages, especially over long distance fights. The logistical fleet will provide a home away from home.

A logistically unsupported fleet will be at a disadvantage, especially over long distance fights. Ammunition and fuel will be short stocked, which will lead to a 'rationing' of whatever the fleet has, which means less firepower output.

And in this, I think there will be a place for that tanker that was spotted in the vid ;)

And the spikey thing at 2:43, what the hell is it? Also, the before mentioned 'cylindar' at 1:24  and another mysterious object at 4:24... Hehe.

Cant wait for the expansion!

I think that the spikey thing is a mine, but I'm not sure. I might have found out what the wierd cylinders are. The Impulse page about Entrenchment says that one of the new features is a "Subspace Inhibitor - Slow enemy ships that pass within its range." I could be wrong, but that would be my guess for what the cylinder is.

I watched the video again, and I'm going to revise my prediction. I'm going say that the mysterious object at 4:24 is the Subspace Inhibitor, and that the cylinder is a mine-layer. The hole in the center of it almost looks like it could be where mines come out, but who knows?

Ironclad and Stardock know.
