512 MB RAM requirement

The program is preventing the installer from running since I do not have the 512 MB physical memory -- I have 504 MB, which falls just short, since I have an integrated graphics card (which is fully compatible with PM2008, i checked) which uses 8 MB of memory. Is there any way I can bypass this, 508 MB does not seem like much less than 512, and I really want to play the game...

I have the exact same issue. In my case, I'm not even using the integrated card--I have a much newer one installed, but the tiny, insignificant amount of RAM it uses is still causing fits. I personally don't think you should keep people who don't meet the requirement from installing the game, just give a warning. I have playing many games that exceeded the minimum requirements, in one case, I have half the RAM required, without any problems, or even significant slowdown whatsoever. If people choose to push their systems and ignore the warnings, that should be their choice, not yours.

mine says the same thing but im preety sure i have enough since i just deleted a bunch of stuff that totaled way over 512mb were do you find out were do you find out how much memory you have

RAM is not somethings that deleting things will free up. You either have it or you don't.

To find out how much, go to Control Panel and open up "Sytem." Look under the general tab, which is probably what will already be up, and the amount of RAM you have should be somewhere on the bottom.

I too am having the same problem. I have 512MB of RAM, and a add in video card. However the onboard graphics chip (which is disabled) still seems to grab a chunk of ram. Now the program will not install, because my pc is reporting only 504 MB.

Come on, don't make me take this back, I really want to play

it says i have 448 mb of ram, can you give it more like with an external harddrive or take out something.

My suggestion would be to use Impulse, I bet it doesn't have that check.

You can add more RAM memory by purchasing more at a store like Best Buy.  It's super easy to install, but if you need help, you can read this link or google: "How To Install RAM" and find your own instructions depending on the level of help you need.

Depends on what kind of memory you need, and where you get it from. If I were you, I'd go to Bestbuy's website and use their computer memory finder. It let's you choose which computer you have and then tells you what memory you need, and how much it'll cost. Once you know what kind of memory you need, you can shop around for a better price, or just buy it.

I'll try it, but not everyone who buys the box game will be willing to do so.

how much does it cost for lets say a 1 gig

$20 or less, depending on what type you need.

As Brad suggested, Impulse may not prevent you from installing the game because of RAM.

However, you should make sure that you have enough virtual memory allocated so that you don't get additional slowdown from Windows having to dynamically increase the amount of virtual memory while playing the game.

To increase the amount of Virtual Memory available to Windows:

1) Right click on the My Computer icon and chose properties
2) Click on the advanced tab
3) Under performance, click on the Settings button.
4) Click on the advanced tab
5) Click on the change button
6) Change the initial size to the recommended size and then increase the maximum size.

As a note, you should make sure that you have enough hard drive space left for the maximum virtual memory size or you'll start having problems whenever Windows has to allocate more virtual memory. You can get the size of the virtual memory in gigs by dividing the number by 1024.

I tried both expanding the virtual memory and installing impulse, neither work. I'm not computer savvy in the least I've got something like 216 RAM but I really want to play. What do I do?

Tycore, it was running a bit laggy with 512, I doubt your 216 is enough to even run the thing even if it was installed.

well, that really sucks. its actually 256 I checked again but I doubt that makes the slightest difference. I guess I should just by more RAM sounds cheap and easy to install.

Oh well, guess I have to take it back to the store. Good thing I didn't lose my receipt. Good thing I still have the 2004 version to play.

Where is this impulse thing? I have more than enough memory left. I spent $20 on this game.

If you already bought the game at a store, then you can install off the retail disc and it'll install Impulse for you (if I remember correctly).  Then you use it to get updates.

If you bought the game digitally from our website, then you should have gotten some kind of email confirmation that tells you how to download the game (ie. get impulse).

Here's where you can get Impulse though: Impulse website

I never thought I'd catch a Stardock person not bothering to read a customer's concerns.

The problem is that the game won't let many people install it at all. The Impulse install is after the regular game install, so no impulse either.

I think that's why Charles posted the link ;)

As for not reading the customers concerns, besides posting the link to get Impulse (which does let you install) there's not much that can be done/said about CD's that have already been printed. At best, it's something that will have to be fixed in the next run.
