Big star system

Anyone try to make a star system with more then 5 planets?  I know how to make custom worlds and all that but I never tried for more than 5.

Reason I'd thought it would be cool to make a star system with all 12 of the human colonies in Battlestar Galactica.  But to be perfectly honest I don't know if each planet:  capria; toran; and so on were all in the same star system or on multiple star systems.  The show was never clear on this.

Correct. You can check this yourself in the TA map editor, maximum planets per star is five.

you can add more by editing the map file but once you do the map editor will not open it or at least that was so before the final release of TA!!

Well if you look closely at the Map Editor, you may find it is certainly possible to crowd up a number of planets so that they 'seem' to be from the same system with ONE star being central to them.
There is one limit though; you'd need to add nearby outside *resized to smallest) stars (sometimes, i wished for a BLACKENED texture set for these too, hint-hint, i love the default purple, do you? btw) so to speak to support the extra planets above the maximum of 5 which the central (resized to biggest) SUN has under its gravity region.

The only obstacle is that planets must be within 3 tiles of the star. Asteroids have more range at 12 tiles. Etc.

So, indirectly... 12 colonies are entirely possible.

Something like this...



Note the time it took me, less than 45 minutes!

That includes...

- Randomize all in a Map editing session. Putting in a custom system & its neighboring two "fake blues". (Which were Purple on the original file, some glitch from Twilight possibly!) All within parameters enforced by the engine; example.... Same sector for any system & its planets, 5 maximum, etc.

- Give a few systems to temporary races while not forgetting Florin to Custom Race.

- Firing up Twilight, making a few scouts to light up the fog.

- Snapping the shot, uploading to ImageShack.

The only remaining work to allow for this kinda stuff would be to change the "intruding Blue Stars" textures by creating a fake temporary blackened texture for the default file (found in the DL folder), integrating it into a MOD location, activate it & starting a game with your new map.

12 Colonies of men -- at your fingertips.

As I said it can be done manually it just takes a very long time :)



as you can see the planets are more the 3 tiles from the sun.

this is a custom map to test mods it also has the dread lords in it that if you let come to power are very hard to beat!!!

I need to tweak it a little more but it is done for the most part

the custom map above work in DA but not TA now GOFIG i`ll have to look to see way it stop working n TA.

i wished for a BLACKENED texture set for these too, hint-hint

Yep, the Ashen star (in your TA snapshot) is possibly built off a black texture.
Still is a selectable tile, but who cares... the illusion does exactly what it's meant for.

Which is also certainly why i wish for only two changes from SD in both the Map & Techno Editors; true and effective backwards compatibility with DarkAvatar features & options.

Only then could we speak about enhancing the Mapping tool itself with things such as; Abundant_Rare sliders, relational link to any external CustomPlanets.xml files and even, spreadsheet editing of all there is on a given map.
Discussions may even get to some tricky resizing stuff like a 10x10 or 15x15 sectors maps type.
Heck, i'd somehow (without adding to much stress on the IDE, btw) prefer a tilting map creation interface similar to the usual shortcuts 1 to 5 - even.

The list is loooong.

well my point is if you want it bad enough and have the time to trial and error it,... you can have a map any way you want it!!!

But it is allot of work!!!

Cool rendition of a nearly TOPO5Min style of file with some Alpha channel blended in & transparency tricks!
This is in fact basicly the same approach i'm trying to use for the Fantastic-4's Invisible Woman appropriate planet. The CoSH mod is slowly becoming a real blast for graphics - the highly complex 12 new tech trees will be a bit more involving though.

btw, in post #6 above - i'd have a question if you don't mind;

- The purplelish ring is tied with Planet *0.7 WKS* in the middle, or what?

Cuz, that orbital value would need to be a LOT bigger than the default "maximum" as it is described by SD's staff.

Holy'moth'half'baked'cookie'slick trick if there's ever one!

The 0.7wks was for the surveyor ship ETA!

If a planet is dead smack middle of a sector @ 7,7 coordinates its ring could be drawn up to a full 9 parsecs away!!

I really do have to give this whole editing power info a try, i can already see my UFO moons riding on some wacky wild paths on some XW maps.

Any OTHER interesting stuff you'd like to share with us - cuz, that IS exactly what any modder in his right mind would bend a 10.999 inches iron bar for.

And, have you had any chances with the tilt1 & tilt2 options for moons? In my games, the pathways differ from what gets animated in the map editor UI.

Before i forget, too.

Ya know Cordelia & Vizzard stars in post #5... well, i gave 'hem the low value treatment by assigning 1 for size - and i can happily say that when my game is zoomed @3, i get to look at two tiny-biddy-willy red DOTS that blend right in the galactic background as if they were *strange space phenomemons* with a name (since, i already tried a space for it and the game crashed on me) !!

Although, Yellow Stars from the Editor are Green when displayed ingame, Red are Yellows, etc. Must be a code glitch -- to be fixed by SD.

Please give more INFO on what you mean or are after here???

OK here we go you`ll see sol in the middle with 5 planets!!

the star systems left and right of it both has more then 8 planets assign to them so they do not show !!



so if I tell the map that there is XX planets and 1 star and assign 5 planets to the home star that will show and assign XX planets that are left to another star name it may do the same as i have on the map !!!



another thing if i make a planet size smaller then 5 it does not show up on the map so i wonder if i make planet size 1 with a moon would it rotate around it even tho it looks like it is not there ??? I`ll try it
