Yes, it's an HTTP proxy which does require login. They changed, several months back (I think around October 2007) to one which is integrated with ADSI, so if the app is aware, our windows logon/pwd are just automagically used/sent. As I've said, SDC works just fine, with all the fields left blank - thereby using Internet Explorer's settings - I no longer see a logon prompt even appear.

I think I will try Impulse out in a day or two... damn homework, damn finals exams and BE DONE WITH IT!  :LOL: 

Now, I don't need to enter a username and password every time to log on, but one was required as part of my DSL set-up. Is that what you mean?

Also, could this explain why Impulse fails without even opening?

Ahh - finally a clue! Working with a test application from Stardock Support, I learned via the output logs that Impulse is using a web service instead of merely connecting to a web site somewhere. And I am positive that my corporate proxy/firewall blocks web services! Weidbrewer, you may want to investigate down that path...

So, #1: Why not state this up front, to help us frustrated users understand and/or troubleshoot why we aren't able to connect?
#2: Why use a web service? SDC works perfectly fine under any circumstance - whether I am behind a firewall or not. Why do developers keep insisting on reinventing the wheel? If it's not broken, please don't try to fix it!!!!! Stop following Microsoft's lead, and STOP making changes purely for change's sake.

And update on my situation:

Someone from Stardock sent me a utility to run to test my proxy settings, but I think that might have been a misunderstanding. My problem isn't with my connection - I can't get Impulse to install, period. (Same with the proxy utility as well.) On a whim, I tried to install Impulse on my laptop, which worked with no problems at all...same network, so it's not the proxy settings. It's obviously something with my gaming rig. Any ideas what to check? I'd really like to get this running and try it out.

Installing as admin or regular user?
Vista or XP?
UAC on or off?

Never had any installation issues in regards to that. It's XP, and although it's not the named admin account, it is the primary account that has full privileges.

When I installed on the laptop, it took several minutes to unpack and install the ap. On the game machine - which, admittedly, has a lot more horsepower - the progress bar almost instantly shoots to 100% and then the error message pops up.

I installed Impluse and it updated itself(I'm assuming to the latest version) and my DA and twilight are not recognized as installed. Am I missing something? Thanks!

Having issues with Impulse updating.

IT won't update.

What does it do?
Click on the question mark in the upper right nad select "View Error log" Anything look important at the end?

@Weidbrewer: Maybe there's a problem with the installation file you downloaded. Try downloading it again. I'm assuming the one you installed on your laptop came from another downloaded copy.

is there another link for the download? the one that was posted keeps stalling on me.

EDIT. NM.. i finally got it.

I wonder, will impulse stop my idiot System Mechanic program from telling me that my SDC is a trojan? lol..Every time I run the "repair spyware" scan in Iolo System Mechanic, it tells me that the Loader.exe to start my SDC is a spyware program and tries to delete it! And if I accidentally let it run automatically, then I end up having to reinstall my SDC!

Specifically I get this error

validating registrations

says the type initializer for "ab" threw an exception.

Then it hangs at the Downloading Impulse updating-connecting screen. I can't actually do anything in it though I can navigate the site with that.

SDC works so much better for me right now.

False positives are a sign of sub par software. They will identify harmless files as viruses, and let real problems go unnoticed. This is a surefire sign that you should ditch system mechanic.
Even if you don't wanna buy something better, at least you wouldn't be getting false positives. It is better to have no security than faulty security.



Also. Someone else asked and I didn't see an answer. If I installed galciv with an older version of stardock, and then i upgrade to the new version (which has the registry fix) and then install impule, would it work? Or do I have to uninstall, reinstall with the new version, and then install impulse?

You don't have to uninstall your games before installing Impulse. Impulse may show your games as having a small update (the "zz" in version xx.yy.zz), but they're negligible. Simply indicating that a different backend was used to create the file for downloading.

Is there a reason it runs (while starting up) the Visual C# command line compiler? At least my F-Secure software asks me if that should be allowed.
