I feel like i don't belong. :-(

I feel like i don't fit in at school, being that i'm only kid that plays PC and strategy games. All of the other kids are Wii or first/third person shooter gaming nuts, plus they all use consoles. Does anyone fell this way. I hate talking about playing Galciv 2 to someone because no one's everheard of it or dosn't talk about and all of the nerds play consoles. The idea of me being the only 13 year old playing that plays this game is kindea embarassing.  (:(  X-(  :(  :SNIFF!:

You can just fit in on other topics. Like those female things that try get you with an influence victory.

If girls are trying to use an incluence victory against me, the nerds are using an technology victory and the other kids are using conquest, who's using an acension victory?

They were available via the Stardock store but i don't see any link there now. If you are interested it might be worth emailing [email protected] and asking.
I purchased a nice black t-shirt with the Drengin logo on it :D

Sethpenguin, if you can't relate to your peers based on the computer games you like to play, can you relate to them based on something else? video games shouldn't be your whole social life. and if all they do is talk about their PWMs in Crysis then it doesn't sound like they're very interesting people.

but in either regard, you should NOT feel embarassed about what you like. i spent a lot of my energy when i was your age and a bit older worrying about what others thought of me, and it's a waste of time. i mean, you have to spend some energy into making yourself the kind of friend you'd want to have yourself. but on the other hand, sacrificing who you really are, your likes and tastes, just to fit in a little more--it's wasted energy. and a point of advice if you are serious about staying in school to be a game designer. it means one day you'll be going to college, and in college, it's the things that make you different that help you meet people and have things to talk about. by the time you're that age, you'll be tired of hearing about just your own interests.

and for now, there's nothing wrong with making older or younger friends if the people your own age all bore you. it's not your fault you have more refined tastes than the newest first-person shooter, so don't turn it around on yourself by being embarassed!

At 13, I was into electronics which was something fairly unusual for a kid that age at the time (this was at the dawn of personal computers, game consoles hadn't even been thought up yet). I sort of blew off that interest for the more popular interests of my friends at the time. It wasn't until I went to college that I studied electronics again. In retrospect, sticking with my electronics hobby would have been more rewarding. Do what is important to *you* and don't let your desire to "fit in" change that. That's a huge temptation when you're young and a regret when you get older.

Hey man! don't give up!

Heck, i'm only fifteen and I know for absolute CERTAIN that i'm the only person at my school who plays this darn game...

It is sorta frustrating not to have anyone to talk to, but that's sorta the point of this forum, right?

well anyways...

None of my friends play this game. But you will find other interests, whether it be fishing, sports or if young teens still do it, ant collecting. Yes I was a wierd one, but I have many friends all over Canada and even used to date a former Miss volusia county winner( hope I spelt that right). If you don't fit in now, you will sooner or later.

And P.S. there is still lots of time for women. And think about it, you are chatting with some very succsessful individuals both in carreers and life, that has to count for something. ;)

Great responses by so many people. :D

Sethpenguin, everyone has had a time in their life where they feel like they dont belong. For me, it was the worst in high school. I as painfully shy, and spent 90% of my free time in my room by myself reading sci-fi & fantasy novels. I averaged around 3 or 4 novels a week, but had just about zero interaction with kids my age. Even as an adult (I'm 36 now), there are still situations when I feel out of place or awkward. The difference now though, is that I dont obsess about it anymore, and when I realize I'm in an awkward-feeling situation, I just shrug it off and smile to myself. I find as I get older, I care progressively less what other people think about me.

It wasnt until my second year of college that I found a great group of like-minded friends who made me feel like I belonged. Many of my closest friends are still from that group. :)

I was a loner in school. I am 52 now and still pretty much a loner. Except for a couple of real friends, the internet is most of my interaction with others. I immersed myself in books, and I still love to read.

E.E. "Doc" Smith, Ph.D - Lensman and Skylark series
James White - Sector General series (Sector 12 General Hospital)
Selected works by Andre Norton
H. Beam Piper - Paratime series
Perry Rhodan series back when it was readily available in USA
Tom Clancy's novels
Selected Star Trek novels (based on original series)
Selected AD&D novels (no Dragonlance!)
Other works of fiction and science fiction.

I lack the hand/eye coordination needed for arcade games. The only sports I ever got involved in were Fencing and Archery. I even taught Archery. I used to paint in Oils and I was best doing landscapes from my mind (not copying nature).

I never fit in, in school, since I was in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and a conservative when they were anti-Vietnam war.

I'm 20 so I'm just a few hops ahead of you, man.

I was definantly not the normal type of person - I didn't look the part of a geek but I sure played one. Let me tell you, do what you enjoy and don't sweat other people.

I only see the people I went to highschool with when I'm buying stuff at Walmart and they're working the counter. They won't matter to you in 6 years.

Do what you love, love what you do.

Sethpenguin:

Greetings from Canada!! I hope this finds you happier after reading these messages. I'd like to add my own two cents' worth, if you don't mind.

I'm a 49 year old lady who ABSOLUTELY ADORES real time strategy games because you can do so much with them. I love the idea that you can build settlements from scratch, send your citizens to their various tasks like cutting wood, etc. This example is from the Age of Empires series.

I got into space strategy game because I fell in love with the Civilization IV mod, "Final Frontier." It allowed you to do everything players did "on Earth" in the main game of Civilization IV, only out in space. I then started to nose for games like it. I found Gal Civs II in a Electronics Boutique shop here in one of our malls. I've also got the first Gal Civ.

You'll find NO FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS in my games collection for I feel that there's too much violence in the world already. There are too man people getting shot and killed, and I didn't want that in my games collection unless the violence was necessary, such protecting your kingdom, taking over other nations, etc. That's why I play games like Medieval 2.

Sethpenguin, don't worry about other guys bragging about their Wiis, PS2s, or whatever. We all know what they're missing, and that's the limitlessness of strategy gaming. The sky's the limit on these, and it's you can make your empire, whether it be on Earth or in outer space. It doesn't matter.

Remember, different strokes for different folks. Go out there and create your empire. The only limit you have is your imagination!!!

Live long and prosper, take care and thank you kindly!!

Sincerely yours always,

Indy.

PlayJeff, I will convert you to my cat-centric philosophy of life eventually! We all serve the cats whether we know it or not... How can resist a cute little creature like this?

Secret of life, Seth - all those people that seem so happy, that seem like they belong and fit in - guess what?

They feel the EXACT SAME WAY YOU DO most of the time.

So don't fret it. It's a phase that all of us have (or had) to pass through, but we turn out okay! I'm sure you will too, little buddy. :CONGRAT:

I think you are lucky that you don't have a lot of people to discuss gaming with.

One thing that I enjoyed particulary, and still do enjoy quite a bit, it that my friends aren't into everything that I am into. We get to share and exchange experiences and try new things out. My friends introduced me to Paintball, and I introduced them to Moo2 (we actually did saturday afternoon Risk during the warmer months).

I always enjoyed and cherished my alone time, where I could chill and play some games or read or watch TV. I also enjoyed Time with my friends, casue we all did things that we normally would have never tried.

hehe, I remember the one time we tried to build a 6ft long potato gun and hooked a propane tank to it. Don't do that.

But my point is that with out my friends, I would missed out on a lot of cool things that I would have never really knew existed, or was so much fun; Martial arts, Shooting, dogs (I'm a cat person too), Futurama, weight lifting.

ROFL, also don't try to make sky rockets with tinfoil and gunpowder.

My friend constructed a very small trebuchet (catapult-like war engine), that we used to fling things of the balcony at our dorm. ;)

yeah it was 6'6" long, PVC pipe. Narrow though, 4ft of 4" PVC then the last two feet were 2-1/2" PVC. We built a valve assembly onto the bottom side that hooked right into the propane tank. That way after filling the gun, we could remove the tank and the propane wouldn't leak out. One of us would then light it with a match. Never found the tennis balls we shot out of it.....

I was an RA and campus security at College. Sigh - no medievil weapons for me....
