It's the calm before the storm...

A little peace and quiet never hurt anyone. :)

This has been a trying round, both from the point of view of the game settings being difficult, but also due to having to deal with some major issues and upset.

I do think we've pretty much hashed out everything that needs to be resolved, however we do have the final detail of making it all official.

I believe that this round has left folks a bit tired and I also believe that I have a reasonable handle on the feelings of the league, so to try and keep the upset to a minimum I will propose that we accept the following two new rules by the "default approval" method.

I will post these rules both here and the MVL Rulebook thread and as long as no one expresses any objection to them within one week from today they will become official MVL rules starting with the next round.

Also there is one rule that I do believe we had reached agreement on some time ago but I apparently neglected to write it up so I'll include that as part of the "straw men" rule. To remind folks about this it's the rule about always setting opponent relations to unknown.

Anyway without further ado here are the two rules that I propose we accept.

Reported Difficulty Levels and Race Customization in MVL Games

Every MVL player is honor bound to ensure that the effective difficulty of any game they submit is accurately represented by the games posted difficulty. To support this requirement the following guidance is provided.

External modification of any game related files are prohibited in MVL games.

In-game modification of opponent characteristics is prohibited in MVL games. The only choices allowed are the selection of opponents from among the default standard races and default custom race and the selection of their difficulty levels.

All opponent starting relations must be set to "Unknown".

Honor System Addendum

The deliberate and determined use by a Player, with full knowledge and intent, of repeatedly and excessively, exploiting bugs, quirks, or other miscellanea in a game to achieve an outcome not normally possible is hereby prohibited in the MVL.

I think this covers everything that has been brought up this round and accurately reflects the will of the league. I will also post this in the MVL Rulebook and then as long as no one objects then 1 week from this post we will have closure and we can put this behind us.

Also note that no mention of game version is made here and that is intentional. These rules apply equally to DA and DL as well as in the future, TA. Some versions may not have the in-game ability to modify opponent characteristics but that point does not limit the rules general applicability.

BTW for general accounting purposes I believe that the last submission was Elwood's in reply #176 which was the 16th submission for the round so far.

Also I want to again point out the summary of the current rounds status in the Current Round Submission thread at ToE. This is in the MVL Parliament forum at the Tyranny of Evil website.

Note that the MVL Parliament can be read by all but only MVL admin can post. While I'm not sure that the restriction against anyone posting to this forum is really necessary, there is a companion forum that anyone can post to which is The League Club.

Finally there have been private MVL team forums setup at ToE for each team that they can use or not as they desire.

That is what my tally shows as well.

I just finished round 7. I was going to wait until we heard from Stardock about the ARC, but what the hey, it sounded like an interesting challenge. Err, I didn't end up using my MVL character, though -- hope that's not a problem.

Here's the result:

Score --> 7250
Timestamp --> 3/22/2008 12:31:02 PM
Race --> Altarians
Alignment --> Neutral
Difficulty --> Painful (Odd, I was sure I set it to Crippling... hmm)
Years --> 6
Version --> v1.80g Dark Avatar (Dark Avatar)

I guess I'm still a member in good standing of the Blade Runners, though Silverbeacher forgot to add me. My score will still count, I trust.

No problem at this point. However if we get our act together and get a more automated system involving the AltMeta then this would be a problem although I would hope not an insurmountable one (yes I remember I promised a writeup that I've yet to deliver).

Absolutely. :)

Here's my submission for this round for the A Team.
I pity the fool that tries to outscore the A Team. ;)

It took me quite awhile to get motivated for these settings but once I finally got going the game became much more interesting.

I'm certainly glad we at least had Fast Tech. Can you imagine what sort of game lengths we would have had if it had been Very Slow?

Thanks. :)

But there's probably another couple more just like these coming from the A team this round.  :LOL:

lol, i almost freaked out, i looked at your overall score for your character first, and was thinking "HOW in the WORLD did he manage that?"

anyhow good job

sorry to everyone if i've seemed a bit distant over the past week or so; its getting to the last 4-5 weeks of school and my grades are kinda suffering (I'm pretty much only managing Cs this semester, WAY below par for me [I held a 4.0 in HS and a 3.5 my first two years in college] so I've been more focused on that as of late)

Actually, I just realized something and that was that I could have easily won this game with any of the 4 victory types.

The final AI was "close" for over a year so I could have easily gotten a political victory. The final AI only had the single PQ3 that I had exiled him to and I had a transport ready that could take him out for a military conquest at any point. I also could have easily destroyed the 13 influence SB's that I had gifted to him to avoid a premature win and ten turns later won by cultural conquest.

I think I may as well take the opportunity to win on the same turn using all four methods and correlate the score ratios that Magnumanic had derived way back when. I'll let folks know how this turns out this evening.

Very interesting idea Mumble. Id be especially interested in hearing how that goes.

Actually it is very interesting and the results are exact, and *not* just approximations.

I ran through the 4 different end conditions and in the case of the Tech (Beyond Mortality), Alliance (Political Victory) and Military (Military Conquest) victories, I was able to end the game in the precisely same turn with the same number of ships, population, income and money spent on research.

In the case of the Influence win I was unable to win on the same turn and had to win the game 2 turns later.

I have screenshots from each of the four Endgame Summary screens. What is interesting is that in the 3 cases where I was able to end the game on the same turn I had identical results in the four components of score and in these three cases the ratios of the total score was exact with no rounding.

Here's the Tech win (Beyond Mortality) screenshot.

And here's the Alliance win (Political Victory) screenshot.

One very interesting thing to note is that the AI's scores do not change based on victory condition. I guess since none of the AI's actually won the game this probably makes sense.

The other interesting thing is that, as I mentioned, each of the four components of score are identical.

The final interesting thing is that the ratio of these two scores 39900/33250 = 1.2 exactly with no rounding.

Now here is the Military Conquest screenshot.

Again, the 4 components of scores are identical, the AI's scores are identical, and the ratio of the two scores, 66500/33250 = 2.0, is exact as well.

Finally here's the Influence win (Cultural Conquest) screenshot.

Note in this case I couldn't end the game until two turns beyond the other three end conditions but there's still some interesting information here. For one, each of the four components of score are slightly larger than in the other 3 cases. The AI's still have the same scores but with such low scores for a 7 year game it isn't surprising that they round off to the same value.

In this case the ratio is 46900/33250 which is slightly larger than 1.4. However based on the above results I have to assume that the ratio of 1.4 is actually exact and if I had been able to end the game on the same turn as the other games then I would have scored precisely 33250*1.4 = 46550.

So in summary we have the following ratios.

Beyond Mortality = 1.0
Political Victory = 1.2
Cultural Conquest = 1.4
Military Conquest = 2.0

Actually I'm going to open up a new thread to post this info under a thread that somone actually would have a chance of finding by using a reasonable search.

Thank you very much for running this experiment and sharing the results with us! :)
It's nice to be sure of such things.

Awesome, i do like playing for wins other than military. My TA games have all been non military wins, its a shame these games get hurt on score soo much. Great work mumble.

Even though it wont count for this round as I am not on the list (lol) I am going to try to get myself back into the swing of things with this game by attempting to win with the chosen regulations in DA :D, if I actually get a better score then someone then I will be most elated, but I will not be expecting this to happen.

Nice games teamates. This isn't a cue for me to submit is it?

Sure if you're ready, you still do have two days though.

I don't see why if you submit a game in time that it shouldn't count. As I remember you had announced the inability to play for an unspecified period of time due to hardware issues if I recall correctly.

Certainly just because Silver left you off the roster for this month is no reason to assume that your game shouldn't count. We already had a similar situation with Ghostwes where he took a break and he had been left off the roster and his game most certainly does count.

I don't see how your case would be any different than his. I would prefer to have Silver weigh in and agree with this as well but I would argue that if you are able to submit a game in time there is no reason that I can see as to why it shouldn't count.

However be warned, these settings of a tech victory with tech trading off were definitely one of the more challenging settings that we've had. Just finishing a game in the two remaining days will be a major challenge, but I would be rooting for you to try. :)
