Sins tops charts

After years of being told that PC gamers are really just console gamers but with different game controllers (mouse and keyboard) and that in-depth strategy was dying, we now have some conclusive evidence that no, that serious strategy games are alive and kicking.

Behold:

And what about sales?

#2 at Amazon.com, #3 at EBGames.com / Gamestop (And it sold out, they've replenished). Sales at other retailers who have it in stock say it's "selling very well" (but no rankings yet).

Why is this significant?

Because the reviews haven't hit yet.  People are buying this game sight unseen despite relatively little coverage, PC gamers so much want a real time strategy game that has 4X depth that they are going out, en masse to find out more about this game and buying it.

You are making your voices heard.  People who buy PC games may have consoles but they don't necessarily want their PC games to simply be ported console games or console-like games.

We thank you for your support!  We hope we are living up to your expectations.

Honestly, I bought it primarily because of the little blue logo on the bottom of this page :)

Games for Windows Magazine(formerly Computer Gaming World) talks about Sins of a Solar Empire on the podcast this week... they're loving it.

Both reasons are absolutely valid and sound.
Hell I got it because I have no life. ;p

I buy all of Stardock's products and have for years.

Most gamers aren't familiar with Stardock...yet. But once they get "the treatment" it's hard to go back to being shit on by the typical developer and publisher who tosses out their half-baked game and throws a patch 3 months later to make it actually work.

Getting a product (you should try their skinning stuff) from Stardock is a lot like how I imagine product service working in 5 years except I get it now. A time where customers are actually part of the process rather than looked upon as saps.

Sorry to gush.

CONGRATULATIONS! And well deserved, just one thing.

As you realize more success and grow, please....please.....PLEASE don't forget that your overall love for what you produce and exemplary service afterwards (updates etc) are large factors in your success.

EA used to be a good company and now they are horrid (do you know that NHL 08 for PC never got a single update and is still working off the original out of date rosters from months before the season started - mid summer 2007?). Please stardock, keep it up and I think it's pretty obvious even now.....a good product is all people want. All the crap other company's releases get pirated because they are not worth spending money on. I'll bet a large % of those interested enough to download pirated versions of sins end up buying because they'll know their money isn't wasted. That and people appreciate your recognition that if it's good, it will sell....protection is not mandatory.

Honestly galcivII is the only game I've found has any real longevity and I suspect sins will be joining that elite group.

THANK YOU!

I have been waiting 6 EXCRUCIATING YEARS to finally hear someone, someone "in the biz", say that.

I daresay that Stardock may be the salvation so many of us have been hoping for.

But please, for the love of all that is holy, could you tone down the rampant PC fanboyism just a bit? I like to pretend that the people who enjoy these sorts of games are too intelligent to fall for that trap, but it's really quite hard when people use the word "console" as if it were an insult. PC gamers really are just console gamers with a different controller - or, if it's more palatable for you, console gamers are just PC gamers with a different mouse and keyboard.

Oh please. To claim that PC and console gamers expect the same things and are alike is ignorance and idiocy. Look at games made before and after 2002 - Pre-2002 consoles were more or less 'kiddie' machines. They were gimmicky, quirky, and fun, but not the same kind of fun that entailed PC games. They were 'dumb' fun.

PC gamers have been lamenting the impact of 'mainstreaming' gaming since the launch of the Xbox, which is right around the time Microsoft got the bright idea to port console titles to their OS. Compare Deus Ex to the consolized Deus Ex: Invisible War. That was completely the fault of the Xbox, and it utterly killed the franchise for damn-near everyone.

The divisor of 2002 marked the end of 'artistic' games. Fallout was never made to be a commercial moneymaker - it was a fun project the developers wanted to create and share with people. Post-2002, games have been about nothing but squeezing cash out of people. Take the latest-and-greatest, buff up the graphics, chop some features so you can sell them in an expansion pack, then treat your customers like crap and release an unfinished game for $50+. Clog it with moronic carrot-chasing schemes like 'unlockable content' to artificially add replayability. Throw some in-game ads in. Then after two worthless patches, release your expansion pack with the previous old features and only support that from then on.

Yeah, I DO think games are an art. They're a creative product born of a conglomerate of minds. Halo wasn't art - Halo was tawdry moneymaker.

Another good example is Morrowind to Oblivion. One was a wonderful, atmospheric RPG dripping with backstory and style. The other was a generic, boring, dumbed-down level-scaled atrocity.

How about System Shock 2 vs. Bioshock? SS2 was, once again, an atmospheric, insanely well-designed, creative, and intelligent game, featuring hands-down the best antagonist in gaming history. Bioshock was a linear slog with an admitably decent story that, however, completely evaporated after the halfway mark, and more or less just degraded into a 'Guy with guns and magic spells blows up mutants'. The game was as deep as a backyard plastic kiddie pool, and had about roughly 5% of everything that made SS2 so fabulous.

Frogboy is dead on the money, and I almost think he understated it. I like playing Super Smash Brothers as much as the next guy, but to be fed that sort of mindless, thoughtless entertainment for 6 years is, well, atrophying my brain. Halo is an unremarkable shooter that appealed to the 'gamers' who really had never played an actually GOOD FPS game before. Console games have a place, but to try to pass off console gaming as just "PC 2.0" is, well, fucking insulting. I don't consider console gamers to be real gamers. Do you consider your gradma playing Minesweeper to be a 'gamer'? That's pretty much what I think of 99% of console releases and console ports - just 3D minesweeper.

Wow, Well f'ing said mate. I could not agree more!! I think the big reaction to Sins is directly due to the lack of a game of Sins quality in many years. PC gamers like myself have been waiting a long time for a game like Sins, so if it seems like we are over-reacting to a well made game....Your Damm Right!!! We've been waiting a long time for a game like this.

1.) Please, don't bring up Shi-I mean Oblivion here. If I weren't obsessed with mod-hunting, I would have thrown it out a long time ago. Vanilla, was, quite honestly, not just a disappointment, but probably one of the worst games I've played in a while.

2.)If you thought NHL'08 was bad, try Madden'08 on for size. Not only was it consolized, but it was actually an inferior version to the console versions, both in GRAFFIXZ and features, and to boot, hasn't been patched, despite the xbox/360 versions getting patches. Shame, since Madden games were the *only* sport games I have ever liked.

Sins is a much needed revitalization of the RTS genre, especially after CnC3. I just wish the same would come about for for my other genres (RPG--although The Witcher was a very good aRPG, as is Oblivion heavily modded--and Space Sims (oh how I miss Freespace [although X3 isn't too bad]) :(

This IS NOT A GOOD GAME!

Its simply the best game since a few years for me :) WTF I play with 3 humans against 5 hard AI locked.

Hickups?
Lag?
Desync?
CTD?
Disconnects?
Bugs?

NOT ONCE! And our games last for 8-15 hours. Getting smashed by the smart AI and we need to play like a real team to survive it. Ofc this is selling well. Omg if you see how stable and polished it is for retail its simply amazing and you guys deserve it that the game is a commercial success! NOW DO NOT sell out to EA or Activision please :)

Hopefully more companies will follow suit with the release system too! :)

Congratulations on the amazing results IC/SD :CONGRAT:

I couldn't wish for this to happen to a more deserving company, so kudos to all of you.
Now if only other companies would take heed and start introducing more depth into their PC games or infact games in general, PC Gaming might yet be saved of twitchy-oblivion. :D
There have been precious few deep involving single player games of late, and Sins is certainly giving me my fix. :HOT: Haven't felt this involved in playing since i started playing EVE again 8 months ago. :CONGRAT:
Can't wait to feel confident enough to do some multiplayer games, but right now i have to work on my skills. A Pair of Normal AIs at normal speed are giving me a run for my money, so it'll be a while.

That's a very important observation. We don't live in a world where there are only pc gamers or console gamers, even though that's what one might think when listening some of the more vocal hardcore pc gamers or if one would take seriously what marketing people think.

Sins of a Solar Empire and heavily modded Medieval 2 are two of my favourite games right now, but I don't have any problem playing Mass Effect, Guitar Hero, FIFA 08 or even Halo 3 on my Xbox 360. I rather think console games fill nicely some of the gaps that pc games just don't cover. I enjoy slow paced strategy just as much as a good match of soccer or the adrenaline burst of a tight multiplayer match in Halo 3 with subwoofer booming and a home theater screen filled with explosions and debris.

I'm just glad I have kept an open mind towards all gaming.

It's good to see that Stardock has found their niche and are getting some media coverage they deserve. I'm fairly certain that there will be some pages written about Sins even here in Finland. We are known to have very refined taste when it comes to strategy games...

Cheers,

Personally i'd kill for a Mass Effect port to PC  but only because it has such a nice story and looks to be quite in depth (no surprises, its a Bioware RPG), and since i don't own, nor plan to own an XBox 360 i can only hope.

But yes IronClad certainly seems to have pulled of a great strategy game which is making game reviewers late for their deadlines due to playing it all night. :CONGRAT: Can't wish for better publicity really. :P And StarDock, THANKS for taking this company under your wings and publishing this game, you two make an awesome team.

I do not have a console at home. I am a PC gamer and I spend a lot (to much) of my time at the PC. I just wanted to mention that.

Awesome news to say at least!!!

I mean i was really reaching a point of totally giving up on gaming due to the fact that most developers / publishers think that games are "too complex" and are releasing mind dumbing shit that simply isn't fun to play for anyone with IQ higher than 5...

Sins are proving that true strategy games are anything but dead and that todays market isn't entirely made up of boom-headshot tards!

Great job guys and keep it up :CONGRAT:

Congratulations to you people at SD/IC! You've created a great game and it makes me happy to see your work rewarded.
The success of Sins clearly states that people want something new, a game not challenging them simply by speed but by depth and the need for careful thinking. In other words: True strategy!
But there's more to it than just Ironclad's great work in programming the game. Never before in my long years as a gamer have I felt more respected as a customer. This begins with Stardock not treating me as a potential thief by using copy protection and restrictive EULAs, instead using reasonable EULAs and other things (like download via SDC while the box is still under way) to make me happy. They did get the idea: A satisfied customer will return to buy again.
Then there's the forum: The heavy presence of SD/IC staff answering questions, discussing existing beta features and user suggestions instead of spending their time censoring everything can only be described as unique. It makes you feel welcome and delivers a message: "This game is for you! You help us make it better, not some market analysts."
Developers taking your concerns serious and taking on suggestions from the community? A gamers dream!
Thank you for all that. :CONGRAT:

I bought the game because of my previous, excellent, experience with Stardock and its products.
I haven't played it nearly as much as I would like...just yet. Still, I see the quality, the care and the effort not only in the game, but here in the forum.

I've said it before: Stardock *deserves* to be successful, because they give a d*mn about their products, and it shows. The PC game genre is not in a healthy place, but there are bright spots, and Stardock is one of them.

Same here. If this wasn't a Stardock release, I'd be waiting for reviews/opinions/sale prices/planets aligning/whatever prior to buying it. Stardock is one of the only companies that gets a release day purchase from me.

This pirate totaly supports stardock / ironclad ! , i always buy my products from these guys :D

Nice job!

For what its worth, I heard about SINS from Stardock, probably via an e-mail.

The GalCiv series and SINS have not disspointed me.

(Hey, if you're looking for something else to work on a game with the epic feel of SINS, the stetegery of GalCiv, and with the immersion of X3 would be swell. I think our PCs can handle it at this point?)

Congratulations on a job well done.

So many hours went into making this a great game.  How exciting it must be for SD and IC hat they could be changing the industry.

Thank you for your passion, your effort, you expertise, and your caring about the customer.  Your success is just as much a product of who you are  as what you sell.  (But . . you happen to create and publish some awesome product).

Again, congrats.

I hope you paid off Gamespot with some advertising or you won't get a good review! It's rare they give scores above 8 to anything that doesn't advertise, from what I've seen. I've been taking their reviews with a grain of salt since well before Gerstmann-gate.

This game did come out at the perfect time - well before Starcraft 2, the only other major RTS coming out for months (years?), and after all the hype from Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, and other twitch games have died down some.

Plus, if the Penny Arcade guys like it, you'll get a nice boost there.

Congratulations guys. You deserve it. Sins is truly a top notch game.

Amen, Frogboy! Over the past three years or so, the idea behind what it means to be a PC Gamer has changed - and much for the worse. From a relative golden age in the 1990s, we've degenerated into a "simultaneous release" and console port destination. What gives? PC gamers are NOT console gamers with different controllers. We want different - not necessarily better, just different - things and we've been increasingly ignored. THANK YOU Ironclad / Stardock! I own GalCiv II and didn't hesitate to buy this before reviews came out. There's no point in waiting, I know it'll be a great game. Keep up the tremendous work.

Now do us a favor and don't sell the company to EA!
