What is Universe at War, and why should I care?

It's a new RTS from Petroglyph, EaW developers. That pretty much sums it up.

It's ground-based, though, and its key point is the radically different faction.

a ground based game from the company that made EAW. while EAW was amazing in space, on land it sucked the bigone...

i dont even think my bandwidth is worth the waste...

i await the reviews...

I gave the demo a try, and I'm not very impressed. The graphics aren't anything we haven't seen before, and the game suffers from probably the worst thing an RTS game can suffer: Units are too big, screen is too small. Your camera is limited so that you can't zoom out very far, so you can only see a handful of your units. Most of the time, if you are centered on them, they fire off-screen. The Hierarchy walkers (huge machines, one of the highlights of the game) are indeed huge, but one *barely* fits on the screen, and while it's there you can't really see much else.

So they did a nice job on making unique/different factions, but other than that, meh

Yeah, its fun to play, but it has "some" weakpoints... it isnt soase
But I like the story part and the not state of the art units.

Petroglyph is Ex-Westwood. They should've done better than EaW, but hey ... they were contaminated by EA. I'm not surprised. UaW sounds, and looks, even less interesting actually.

War of the Worlds +2 factions anyone?

again, suffers from "is not supreme commander" syndrom in too many ways, big units, small screen, screen pan isnt well done etc.

damn, Supcom has ruined the curve for plane-based RTSes, I'm having trouble finding another good one!

I didnt like SC... played 30 seconds of the Demo and deinstalled it.
Universe at war makes more fun.

Regardless of whether you like Supcom or not, the zoom functionality is a huge plus. Panning blows, we're spoiled now and we know it blows.

*slaps aldarian*

what psychoak said, I probably wont by a game without SC/sins like major zoom capacity until the day I die.

likely, thats no garuntee.

Starcraft 2 probably won't have that zoom (or scale)...will you buy it?

P.S.: Watch your next words or you may be stoned for apostasy.

Starcraft 2 will be one of blizzard's worst games, mark my words!

you got me, its an exception because I'm buying it only for the sake of playing it with my friends.

its either going to be a great game or a sac of monkeynuts, but either way its going to sell extremely well.

ah, did I mention I'm stone-proof?

gaming companies need to get it together, panning is SUCH an old idea, its much faster to simply incorporate a zoom-extremely-far-out zoom-really-far-back-in approach, its easier and its far more accurate.

No.

A) I can't play without zoom.
B) From what I've read, its still focusing on micro rather than macro.

The biggest problem with Starcraft 2 is that it is Starcraft. Regardless of how great the orginal StarWars was it might have just been too great to make the second set. I think this logic will apply to anything that has been hailed as "The BEST" as to whatever it was.

The board needs emo commands so I can cut my wrists over that...

Well your probably right Seabass. SC2 will probably be a pretty good game...but it doesn't look like its going to be as innovative and cool as SC was. So it'll always live in the shadow of its predecessor. However, any SC player who went through the campaign will be forced to play this game because we have to find out what will happen to Zeratul? WTF is up with Duran? Will Kerrigan and Raynor ever screw each other like they were so close to doing in the first part of SC1? I must know!

I'm still extremely curious what people consider about starcraft to be good in the first place...

I honestly couldn't have said those better. But why are we talking about StarCraft in a UaW thread?

I was ho-hum towards SupCom for awhile, but the constant "throw units at 'em" gameplay was really boring. Worse, MP is filled with folks obsessed with rushing and dueling. (Not to mention the whiners in the forum who complain over EVERY change made.)

First, it was one of these first, if not the first, (and certainly the best) RTS with radically different factions. Terran Marines did not have a straight analog with the Protoss and Zerg (very few units in SC did, with the exception of the Devourer/Corsair/Valkeree group with still had significant differences between the units). For another thing, its campaign had a solid, compelling story with characters that were easy to connect with. In addition, the balance between the races was perfect. If played correctly, any race could defeat any other race (which can be difficult to pull off in pratice if not in theory). Also, the Battlenet has kept SC alive forever. I still even play online occasionally (mainly the player made use map settings games). If anyone wants to add anything else to educate this heathen about the greatness of SC please feel free.

it also had some of the best trigger editors of the time
