The Terran Odyssey

The Terran Odyssey

Just another tale...

Okay, so here we are once again, with another tale of glory and sacrifice, but with a difference.

It is the rule of nature that all things evolve over time, get stronger and grow bigger.

Empires grow & expand, and they also wither away in the sands of time. Great civilizations are built, flourish and then are destroyed, but they leave behind indelible footprints, the traces of which are always there for the true seekers of knowledge to find.

And there has always been, and there will always be, War. War is a terrible and bloody affair, glorious, inspiring many acts of bravery and valour, but bloody nevertheless. And interstellar war is indeed a much more frightening phenomenon, with entire planetary populations decimated in the span of a single war. History is replete with innumerable legends of great Emperors and Leaders and Admirals and Generals, but it is the common sailors, the soldiers, who live, fight bravely and die…sometimes in the unforgiving harshness of cold space, or on the desolate surface of distant planets, who are truly responsible for great deeds…for building up great empires and civilizations which have stood the test of time.

This is therefore a tale of these brave souls and how they contributed to the cause of the political entity called the Terran Alliance – an attempt by humanity to become a massive star-spanning galactic entity. A collection of personal logs, mails to family members (the unedited versions), third person accounts and brief snatches of historical backgrounds - a hotchpotch which will attempt to recreate the terror, the joy, the excitement, the pride, the tragedy and the trials and tribulations of the men and women in uniform, during one of galactic history’s most blood torn yet glorious ages-the Age of the Younger Races.

G.Y. 31-32 (T.Y. 2256-2257) – Build-Up

It was during this brief period that the Alliance decided to embark on a daring course of action. Terran leaders, under advice from Grand Admiral Hartford, had decided that the resurgent Drengin threat had to be eliminated once and for all…and with the Torians and Altairians (who were also facing rising tensions with the Arceans, who accused them of fermenting rebellion in their colony on Dark Yor III - a worrying development) engaging their fleets with heavy casualties, the time was ripe for the Alliance to change their defensive stance and launch a full-scale invasion of the Drengin Empire.

Although the Yor had never challenged them openly, their involvement in the notorious Dark Yor and Snathi plans for galactic domination as well as their giving ships to the Drengin to fight the Alliance, the strange virus attacks on Allied Research Networks and the mysterious disappearance of personnel in Yor space, as well as the deteriorating state of relations all led to one certain fact – that the Yor Collective would one day open hostilities with the Alliance. Before that happened and before the Yor became too powerful (they were already the second most advanced and powerful race in the known universe), Alliance Command decided to take care of the Drengin threat and so avoid a two-front war that might well prove to be disastrous.

With this aim in mind, Commander Hartford decided to build up his forces near the SCZ and a steady flow of ships and materials soon started their long journey to this area. Of course, enough ships (around 25) were left behind in the Northern Colonization Zone to deal with any Yor attack or atleast buy time to re-deploy forces…just in case.

By August of 2257, Alliance Command had amassed a force of 8 Warhammer Battleships, 60 Nexus Torpedo Cruisers, 2 Enterprise-NX-1s and 24 fully laden Warcraft Troop Transports (more than 90 starships) for their campaign, designated Operation Blitzkrieg.

The Alliance First Battle Group arrayed near the southern border prior to starting Operation Blitzkrieg

This was going to be humanity’s first full-scale interstellar war - a costly war, against a dangerous, powerful and more advanced foe, but a war that was necessary to ensure the survival of the human race.

The Great Alliance-Drengin War was about to begin in earnest.

Historical Note: It was also during this period that the Alliance built an Economic Capital on Earth and a Technological capital on Snathi IV. In addition bio-engineers and geologists had discovered 2 new resources – Harmony crystals and Aphrodisiacs. These were immediately harnessed and mass produced and would greatly help in the growth of the Alliance in the years to come.

Thanx ppl! Its because of supportive ppl like u all that these forums are such great places to write.

Mail from Askarov Kolinsky, Weapons Officer, 1st Class, T.A.S. Dallas, Ranger Squadron…

Dear dad and mom…I hope all is well at home. I hear Nikolai is doing well as Research Assistant in the Artemis Research Complex on Odin III. He was always the brighter of the two of us.

Everything here is good, and I am doing okay, though I do miss home, specially the long walks in the scenic valleys of Triad III and those exciting hiking expeditions on Mount Cerebrus. I am sorry I was incommunicado all these months…but the final stages of graduation from Starfleet Academy were very hectic indeed. Endless exams, simulations, stress interviews, mock briefings and continuous drills, 20-hour workdays - the whole works. But I did it…graduated from the Academy with distinction, top of the class! And then we were all immediately told to report to the Snathi star system - no R&R and no time off.

Anyway, here I am – several dozens of light years away, in the Snathi fortress system, bordering the Altairians at the southern edge of Alliance space. I wish you could see me now. Apparently something big is happening here…the system is crowded with large numbers of Alliance warships – all part of the Alliance Task Force 01. So many starships, with more arriving every week, arranged around the gigantic Omega 1 Battle Station, bristling with weapons, near the planet of Snathi I, a sight that is not one that can be easily relegated to forgetfulness.

Never before have I seen such a formidable concentration of ships and manpower, and even the veterans are impressed with the sheer firepower possessed by this amassed fleet. I am currently stationed on the T.A.S. Dallas, a modified Nexus class Torpedo Cruiser which is the flagship of the famous Ranger Squadron – the only Alliance squadron to have successfully participated in the Snathi Crisis and the famous Battle of Theta Iota (against the supposedly invincible Drengin Killer Fleets). It was in this last victorious engagement that the Ranger Squadron suffered casualties and as a result I have been brought in as one of the many replacements. Unfortunately, it seems that the commander Alex Gordon has been transferred to command the new Hammer Squadron. A pity, because I would have loved to meet the man who has become the role model and hero to whole generations of Starfleet cadets, but I guess serving as a part of his legendary squadron is an achievement in itself.

Speculation is rife of course, but I have a feeling that this time we are taking the fight to the Drengin home worlds. Surprisingly, after the Battle of Theta Iota, they have not sent any more Killer Fleets our way. Maybe the reports from the frontlines are true after all – the Altairians, despite losing several dozens of ships, have been giving them a bloody nose – and have even captured several Drengin planets in the east. It may also be that they still think that we are too weak to threaten them militarily and so they continue to focus their military might on the Torians and Altairians.

Although I am nervous, it will be a relief to actually be able to do something to avenge the terrible Omega 7 carnage. I lost my good friend Amaros, who had been working in the base’s main engineering section during the attack. We all know the other terrible atrocities committed by the Drengin, specially on the Torians – the horrific prison camps and Arenas of Pain – entire planetary populations in their billions either incinerated or eaten. Even the Altairians report that any of their soldiers captured by the Drengin were terribly tortured and several were even eaten alive! Maybe it is time for us to combine our strengths and wipe this menace from the galaxy once and for all.

Anyway, whatever be the case, we will know for sure in the next few weeks. But for now, we carry on the daily routines - once again endless drilling and training.

Something tells me that I might not get a chance to communicate with you again in the near future, there are rumours that a complete communications blackout has been ordered by Alliance Command, but I will keep logs.

Take care both of you, and please give my best wishes to Nikolai.

Your Loving Son,
Askarov

Alex Gordon
Captain T.A.S. Warhammer & Commander of Alliance Hammer Squadron

Another potential mother of a battle coming up and once again we are going to be at the forefront of the action. Things just keep getting more and more exciting. Though this time I doubt whether we will be able to come lightly off. The Drengin were certainly no pushover…but the Torians and Altairians were able to tie down their fleets…preventing them from turning on the Alliance with their full force. But even though we won most of the few battles that occurred and destroyed several Drengin ships, we still suffered casualties. I lost a lot of good men in that last major battle of Theta Iota…people under my command. The vision of Drengin missiles tearing through those ships and the screams of the dying men still echo in my brain and sleeping at night is becoming more difficult day by day.

But this time it looks like full-scale war. Despite having lost a total of more than 50 ships and some planets, they still remain a powerful force to reckon with. Our military attaches have kept us informed of the horrific casualties suffered by even the massively powerful Altairian Navy – with more than 70 ships destroyed and almost 3 billion Altairian soldiers killed. The Torians too have lost many ships and have once again fallen back against the renewed Drengin offensive, though they haven’t lost any more planets.

Even if our ships do manage to blow the Imperial Grand Fleet out of the skies, their numerous worlds are protected by billions of bloodthirsty Drengin marines - the galaxy’s fiercest warriors, who are all sworn to defend their planets to the very end.

Of course the Alliance is now in a much better position itself to deal with the Drengin menace. Most of the Nova class Cruisers that had made up the bulk of Starfleet have been upgraded to the far more deadly modified Nexus Torpedo class – more than twice as fast and with double the firepower. The Alliance has been pumping out dozens of these and several of the mighty Warhammer Battleships in the last one year. In fact, with the new emphasis on industrial production, most of the Alliance’s factories are performing at 100 % efficiency (up from the previous 61 % a few months ago) and the Alliance’s total production levels are even catching up with the mighty Arceans and Altairians. Intelligence reports have shown that the Alliance Navy has now become the fourth most powerful space force in the known galaxy, having already surpassed the Drengin Empire and nearing the Yor Collective too in combat power.

The Warhammer – reminds me of the T.A.S. Warhammer, my current ship and the first ship of its class. Quite a change from my previous unmodified Nexus Cruiser with which we had taken on the Drengin Killer Fleets.

Although I do miss my old Ranger Squadron, I must say that I am excited to have been put in command of the Alliance’s first squadron of Warhammers – with the safety of 4 of these beauties and more than 400 personnel on my aching shoulders. The lethality of these new ships was proved in our most recent engagement, where our squadron took out a Yor gifted Drengin Ith’kar Frigate (the same type which had inflicted such heavy casualties on our older Nova and Longbows and had destroyed the Omega 7 Starbase) within a few seconds…without any loss of life or significant damage.

It’s good to see that the crew is adjusting nicely to these new ships and morale is high despite the recent loss of many comrades. I am glad that all those brave sailors who died in the line of duty received their due accolades though that will be small compensation to their bereaved families. I can only hope that these new ships will allow us to take on the powerful Drengin Navy on a more even footing…with the minimum of loss of human life.

Have to go now…the emergency drill alarm has just sounded. More later…

Location: Sector 5,15, near the Torian Southern and Drengin Western Colonization Region border

The NX-1 class Advanced Exploration Cruiser was indeed a work of beauty. Smooth lines, a huge streamlined body - the epitome of advanced Alliance engineering. Gone were the old days when ships would take several months to move from one sector to another. The NX-1 could cover an entire sector within a single month (it was a measure of how vast the Alliance’s territories were, that it would take an NX-1 more than five months to cross across the entire volume of Alliance controlled space, even at top speed).

Right now though the T.A.S. Oracle was gliding slowly through space at minimal speed, in a programmed series of drift-and-dash maneuvers, its sensors searching space for any signs of gravitic distortion, which would indicate the presence of a starship or other objects, like starbases or space debris. Although not capable of giving much detail, the Gravitic Distortion Detector allowed the Alliance ship to detect ships at extreme range, upto 7 parsecs away, without any active detectable emission. Once any ship was detected, the Nexus would stealthily track and approach its target, allowing the other passive sensors, like Modulated Particle Analysers, BVR Telescopes, LR Infrared Receivers and Signal Trappers to analyse the target specifications from a safe distance.

The NX-1 had been patrolling this border region for weeks, its mission - to chart out enemy territory and use coded ultrawave data bursts to report the positions and composition of Drengin defenses and ships to operators aboard the T.A.S. Warhammer, the flagship of the nearby approaching 1st Battle Group. A dangerous job, as had been amply proved by the loss of the legendary T.A.S. Enterprise a few weeks ago - an incident, that along with the Omega 7 attack had led to the re-kindling of hostilities between the Alliance and the Empire. So far though, no enemy ships had been detected.

Captain John Conrad was in his private room, catching up on some much needed sleep, when his communicator started buzzing.

Uttering a string of colourful curses, the captain got up and blearily reached for the communicator.

As soon as he activated the communicator, the voice of his First Officer Parsons informed him that he was urgently needed on the bridge.

Just another false alarm, he thought wearily. But he had to get up nevertheless – after all it came with the job…

----

A few minutes later, as he stumbled through the turbo-lift doors to the bridge, he could sense that this might actually be the real deal. The tension in the air was palpable, though everyone was doing his or her job, stoically refraining from looking at him.

“Report Ms. Parsons”

The red-haired First Officer, Kylie Parsons turned and motioned for him to come to the sensor station. A Caucasian female from the former Canadian Republic, before it had peacefully merged into the North American Union, Kylie had beautiful big brown eyes that could look into your soul. They had once had an intense affair, but it had tapered off when both had realised that it was adversely affecting their work life. After all only it was only one in a million people who actually got a chance to become a part of Starfleet and it made no sense to throw away years of effort just for the sake of an affair that had no future.

Forcing his mind off this line of though, the captain nodded and moved to the upper portion of the bridge. As soon as he saw the Threat Indicator Display he realised what had happened. A group of 5 red dots labeled with myriad statistics – they had found the Drengin!

“Target type and composition?”

The Sensor Officer Mc Grille turned when he saw the captain.

“Hard to say from this range, but it seems like a full Drengin Killer Fleet, composed of Frigates and Escorts.”

A stab of fear went through his spine. If they had been detected…

Mc Grille must have guessed what was going on in his mind, because he immediately added, “They haven’t detected us.”

John nodded but couldn’t keep the relief from his voice.

“Can you give me a course projection?”

The Sensor Officer turned and tapped a few keys on the sensor board. A 3-d hologram of the nearby sectors appeared, with blue lines being superimposed on the red dots.

“We will be able to get a more accurate estimate once we know their speed and mass, of course…”

“…but the picture is clear enough. It seems that they are on an intercept course for the Poseidon system, which lies directly in the path of the approaching 1st Battle Group.”, the captain concluded.

It was the turn of First Officer Kylie to nod. “We guessed as much sir. That’s why we called you.”

John took a deep breath. Walking to his Captain’s chair, he sat down and stared giving orders.

“Okay everybody, you know the drill. Mr. Horatio, enter a course parallel with the target, but at a safe distance. Carefully please, I would prefer not to be detected. Mr. Grille, continue scanning – we must have all the details – ship types, weapons, shield defences, sensors, everything. Once we have enough data, we’ll warn Commander Gordon.”

Everybody resumed their posts and soon the bridge was a scene of hectic but organised activity.

Outside in space, the massive Warp Engines started thrumming as it prepared to activate the transition sequence to hyperspace. It was time to play cat and mouse with a Drengin Killer Fleet.

Just another day in the life of an NX-1 crew.

Tulas Kokomai, the Torian Master Detector on duty couldn’t help but let out a yelp as he looked at the radar screen. It couldn’t be – a full Drengin Killer Fleet, in the heart of the Confederation. And not just any Fleet, but the legendary Kom Basher Fleet, which was notorious for having single handedly smashed several Torian Battle Fleets, without sustaining any significant damage!

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

The legendary Kom Basher Fleet

He was about to warn the nearby Confederation battle fleet about the Drengin, when suddenly a new series of dots appeared at the northern half of the screen. Puzzled, he checked the data on these new arrivals…and did a double take.

The new arrivals were a group of 4 huge starships, much larger than the scary Drengin Battle Frigates and armed with weapon ports that seemed unfamiliar to the Torian. They moved with a speed that only the fastest of the new Torian ships could match, and the lead ship was hailing him.

The holo-emitter above the control board crackled to life, as the image of a stern looking human Starfleet officer came into existence.

Tulas Kokomai repeated his hail – “Unidentified ships, this is Confederation Command. Please identify yourself and state your intentions, or we will be forced to take defensive measures.”

The tall human officer looked more amused than irritated. Against the massive bulk of the Terran ships, the small Torian Frigates and Fighters guarding the planets did seem mighty puny.

“Confederation Command, this is Captain Alex Gordon, Commander Alliance Warhammer Squadron. We are here to help our allies, the Confederation to tackle the Drengin threat, once and for all. Hope we have your permission.”

Awestruck by the fact that he was talking to the legendary Terran Captain Alex Gordon, Tulas Kokomai could only glance at the radar screen, which showed the arrival of dozens of sleek cruisers and massive troop transports in the sector.

It was true – the rumours of Allied plans for an all-out attack on the Drengin.

Their saviours had come.

P.S.: 2 things - One, the real action starts from the next chapter and two, will be posting around 3 chapters per week, so as to space out the story and due to a time crunch (u know - work and all). Thanx once again for all the appreciation!

The Battle of Poseidon

Stardate: 18.4.2258

Location: Onboard the T.A.S. Warhammer, Warhammer Squadron, Alliance Battle Group 1, Poseidon System, Torian Confederation Core Territories

Some aspiring poet had once compared the sights and sounds of hyperspace travel to the ethereal beauty of creation itself. Although an exaggeration, the swirling bright colours of the photonic field swirling around the Warhammer, as it sped towards its destination, was enough to take any mortal’s breath away. The beautiful panoramic view outside was however lost on the ship’s captain, and the commander of the fleet, Commander Alex Gordon. He was busy in his own thoughts, reviewing the squadron’s battle readiness and pre-decided attack plans. He was in command of the most powerful group of ships ever assembled by mankind. Consisting of 4 Warhammer class Battleships, this squadron had been built with one purpose only - to wreak vengeance on the Drengin.

Despite having this powerful force at his disposal, Commander Gordon was worried. Although his ships outgunned the Drengin Battle Frigates and Escorts, the enemy ships were heavily armoured and were piloted by some of the galaxy’s most experienced Drengin – proven masters of the art of space warfare. In fact, analysis of the findings broadcast by the T.A.S. Oracle a month ago had showed that the newly modified Drengin Battle Frigates, while far more maneuverable, could stand much greater damage than even the mighty Warhammers, while the much smaller modified Escorts were also almost as tough. And the Kom Basher Killer Fleet had 5 ships to his 4.

It was going to be a tough fight. Would the new Photonic Torpedoes be enough to take out this formidable enemy?

They would find out soon enough…

----

“Sir, our scanners are picking up the Drengin fleet. Preparing for transition phase. ETC 2 minutes.”

“Open a channel to the squadron. All ships, this is Commander Gordon speaking. We are nearing the enemy fleet. Red Alert. Power weapons and prepare to acquire targets the instant we enter normal space. Assume standard attack formation Beta. Fire only on command. Remember, concentrate your firepower, gentlemen.”

The captains of the various ships replied back, one by one, that they had heard and understood. The Alert Klaxons started ringing, and the Alliance ships hastily maneuvered into the preplanned attack formation. Outside, the crackling photonic field started shimmering as the grav-field generator powered down in response to the Admiral’s orders. A low hum could be heard reverberating amongst the innermost layer of the double-hull, as the Photonic Torpedo Launcher capacitors started charging up.

A blinding flash lit the viewscreen.

“Phase Out complete.”

The Proximity Alarms started blaring.

“Sensor scan?”

“Enemy fleet consists of 3 Kri’Vak Battle Frigates and 2 Korcha Missile Escorts…same as reported. One of the Frigates seems to be lightly damaged. Estimated distance 500k and ETA 10 minutes.”

“Lock the damaged Battle Frigate and send targeting data to all other ships. Tell me when we are within range. Keep an eye on the other ships also. Squadron, full steam ahead.”

A few minutes later…

“Sir, target in range.”

“All ships…fire! Mr. Jake, track how the Drengin ship responds.”

The ships shook as a total of 20 crackling balls of energy raced out into space.

Warhammer Squadron launches its first salvo of torpedoes

“Enemy is firing Kra’tak and Psyonic missiles!”

“Evasive action!”

Photonic Torpedoes, though very powerful, were slightly slower than the missiles and less maneuverable. The captain of the lead Drengin ship took advantage of this and plunged his ship in a series of complex maneuvers.

The torpedoes whizzed by as the ship executed another sudden turn.

“The torpedoes have missed. Missiles coming in fast!”

“Brace for impact!”

Three missiles narrowly missed the rapidly turning Warhammers. The remaining five missiles homed in and hit.

“Report!”

“Two ships hit. The T.A.S. Missouri reports heavy damage to her forward section.”

“Feed in the recorded enemy maneuvers onto the Battle Analysis comp and program it to find a better targeting solution. Forward to all ships and feed the data to the launchers. All ships, fire when ready!”

“Firing!”

Once again another volley of destructive energy flew towards the Drengin ships.

This time though, a few found their targets. The lead Drengin ship, unable to take such concentrated punishment, exploded.

“Sir, one Drengin Frigate has been destroyed and another damaged.”

----

The T.A.S. Warhammer duking it out with 2 battle hardened Drengin Kri'vak Frigates

The battle wore on as the warships came closer. Space was awash with the light of destructive energy, as numerous torpedoes and missiles filled the sky, joined by an explosion, as another Drengin Frigate succumbed to the orgy of destruction. As the range decreased, more weapons found their mark resulting in more damage.

The destruction of the T.A.S. Missouri

“The Missouri is breaking up!”

“Damn! Continue firing. Concentrate on that last Frigate!”

----

A few more seconds and another badly damaged Drengin Frigate exploded in a brilliant halo of light and spinning debris.

Undeterred by the daunting losses faced by their side, the remaining Korcha Escorts continued their vicious attack on the badly damaged T.A.S. Okinawa.

On board the T.A.S. Warhammer…

“Sir…the Okinawa reports that it has lost its forward launchers and sensors. Hull integrity down to 15 %!!”

“Concentrate fire on the nearest Escort. Helm bring us around to heading 30, emergency thrust. Contact the Victoria. We need more fire.”

As the nearby Alliance ships opened fire on the Drengin Escorts, the Okinawa started listing to port, plasma trailing from a destroyed engine.

A few seconds more and the T.A.S. Warhammer’s viewscreen was suddenly filled with a blinding flash as the mighty Okinawa exploded, spinning debris the size of large boulders slicing through space at devastating speed. One of the pieces struck a nearby Escort that wasn’t able to get out of the way in time, destroying the already heavily damaged ship. Another of the pieces struck the T.A.S. Warhammer a glancing blow.

The bridge shook violently and one officer, who was manning the auxiliary sensor station and wasn’t strapped in, went flying and hit the wall with a sickening crunch.

“Damage Report!”

“Light damage to our starboard side. The ship is venting plasma from a ruptured coolant pipe. A couple of people in the vicinity report light injuries…no fatalities…except for Second Officer Davis Jones.”

A heavy silence momentarily descended upon the bridge, which was shattered by a cry from the Sensors Officer.

“The remaining Escort has targeted us. Firing!”

“Return fire! Take him out!”

The T.A.S. Warhammer destroying the D.I.S. Deathstar

The Drengin captain cursed as his Psyonic missile impacted on the T.A.S. Warhammer’s armoured fore hull, but did only minor damage. A bright explosion was visible as the large hull absorbed the enemy fire, and once again the bright vortexes of death lashed out, blowing up the D.I.S. Deathstar.

----

“Sir…enemy space forces have been eliminated.”

“Good. Start preparing a full damage report for the fleet. Assign the Darwin to help us search for any survivors. Contact the rest of the Battle Force. Tell them we have secured the Poseidon system and they can advance. Good work people.”

A series of happy Aye Aye’s greeted him. They had done it. The Terran Alliance had just won its second major victory against the invincible Drengin.

Unmindful of the cheering reverberating around the bridge, Commander Alex Gordon sat slumped in his seat, his head in his hands.

They had won…but at what cost? Almost 200 personnel were dead…again under his command. He knew he couldn’t have done things any better, but that didn’t stop the pain.

When would it all end?

Location: Onboard the D.I.S. Star Mauler, J’kal Mauler Squadron, Drengin Imperial Hunter-Killer Force 2, Jessuin System, Drengin Northern Conquest Zone

Admiral Go’kar clicked his canines restlessly as he sat in his elevated command couch, looking at the view screen…waiting.

Outside, the massive Vor’tak Battleship was in formation with the other four ships of the J’kal Mauler Fleet, two Kri’Vak Battle Frigates and two Korcha Missile Escorts.

Only a few hours ago, sensors aboard the Star Mauler had detected an approaching Alliance Combat Squadron, consisting of six of the new Nexus Torpedo Cruisers. A quick search of recorded IFF transponder frequencies showed that this was the famous Wolf Squadron, which had destroyed the Drengin ships in the Battle of Theta Iota. It was time for revenge!

Reacting to this news, Admiral Go’kar had requested for backup from Imperial Command, but there were no warships nearby, which would be able to reach the system in time.

“Never mind”, Go’kar thought. “Our fleet is enough to crush those fragile Alliance ships, just like we crushed those Torians and Altairians. After all, with more than 10 kills in its record, the Star Mauler was THE most battle-hardened ship in the known galaxy. Even in its damaged state the Mauler was a mighty warship.”

In the front of the Bridge, one of the Lower Class stirred.

“My Lord…sensors are showing a disturbance at heading 43 degress to starboard. Enemy ships phasing out into normal space.”

“All ships…Red Alert!! Activate weapons and shields. Prepare to fire missiles on my command. Destroy those human scum!”

The Alliance ships would get a nasty surprise when they entered real space.

-----

Back in space, the T.A.S. Courageous and her sister ships phased back into real space, their weapon systems charged up and ready.

Onboard the Courageous, things were getting hectic.

“Sir…incoming missile wave consisting of Psyonic and Kra’tak missiles! Sensors also detect one damaged Vor’tak Battleship, two Kri’Vak Battle Frigates and two Korcha Missile Escorts.”

“All ships target the Vor’tak and fire torpedoes. Battle Plan D. Evasive action!”

Having been caught by surprise, the Alliance ships were not ready for dealing with such a huge missile wave. Would they be able to successfully ward off this attack?

-----

As the missiles came closer, the Alliance ships started jinxing in a complex series of maneuvers. The Drengin missiles would lock onto a ship, only to find it make an abrupt turn and another ship appear in its view. The missile would then speed after this target only to find the trick repeated, again and again.

Three more missiles were fooled and veered off into space, narrowly missing their targets.

The remaining seven missiles homed in on two of the Cruisers that had been a little too sluggish.

The explosion lit up space. The other ship moved on, venting plasma and listing slightly to port.

-----

Meanwhile the wave of Photonic Torpedoes came ever closer.

The Vor’tak was a very powerful ship, but its large size meant that it was slightly sluggish and not very maneuverable. To compensate for these deficits, the Admiral had instead settled for a more insidious strategy.

Under his orders, the two Missile Escorts ships, the D.I.S. Talon and the D.I.S. Raptor activated their engines and flew at full speed towards the approaching wave. When close enough, the ships turned abruptly and moved towards each other, across the path of the torpedoes.

The plan worked as anticipated. The torpedoes veered off course and headed towards the Escorts As they came closer, the two ships intersected and one of the Escorts moved behind the other, turned on its wing and raced back towards the remainder of the Drengin fleet. The torpedoes went after the one target in their scope.

The resulting explosion sent the fleeing D.I.S. Talon tumbling, leaking plasma venting from its damaged starboard nacelle. But it had survived, as had the Star Mauler.

Back on board the Courageous, Commander Valorus shook his head in disbelief.

He hadn’t seen that coming. For a moment a fleeting sense of admiration for the ingenuity of the Drengin Admiral fought with disgust for the reckless disregard shown by Go’kar for the lives of his own people.

Then he was back to his usual calm self again as he dispassionately watched the two fleets converge.

The Courageous dukes it out with a Kri'vak Battle Frigate

Space exploded as the two fleets opened up again on each other. The battle soon degenerated into a fierce knife fight, as the ships weaved around each other, firing as they maneuvered.

-----

The bridge was shaking with the numerous impacts.

Admiral Go’kar slammed his claws down on the handle of his command couch in frustration; as yet another impact shook his ship.

“My Lord…Missiles are ready to fire.”

“Fire! Destroy those vermin!”

The battle continues

Once again space erupted as yet another Nexus exploded.

Commander Valorus gritted his teeth. They were losing.

The Drengin had lost one Frigate and both the Escorts, but the Vor’tak Battleship had still survived and was pouring murderous fire into the Alliance ranks. A total of 3 Terran Cruisers had been destroyed and the Virginia was badly damaged.

They had to destroy the Drengin battleship, but every time they fired, some other ship came in front. Some of the missiles got through, but not enough. It was time for a more desperate strategy.

The commander turned to his navigation officer.

“Mr. Kane, take us in close to the Star Mauler – full speed. Mr. Kumar, lock weapons onto the Vor’taks rear engines and prepare to fire torpedoes with a one-second interval between the first and the other two – firing pattern Theta. Mr. Chad, signal the Coyote and Virginia to concentrate fire on the Battle Frigate.”

The T.A.S. Courageous takes on the Star Mauler

“Execute maneuver Epsilon-5…now!!”

As the Nexus class Cruiser approached the large Drengin Vor’tak Battleship from an oblique angle, in a maneuver similar to a Klingon Sabre Dance (a classic maneuver from the same Star Trek science-fiction series), the proximity detectors started screaming as another salvo of missile laced out.

“Hold on…people. We’re almost there. On my mark…”

As the missile wave came closer, the T.A.S. Courageous slowed down, until after almost a minute, the ship almost came to a stop.

“Emergency turn – port 140 degrees.”

As reserve energy from the ship’s capacitors coursed through the ship’s ventral thrusters, they came alive, turning the large ship around with amazing speed. Although the reinforced polybdenum hull groaned in protest, it held together.

“Engage 2/3rds thrusters. All hands…brace for impact!”

Outside in space, the large ventral thrusters fired as the Courageous moved suddenly, executing a steep dive towards the incoming Kra’tak missiles, fired from the Star Mauler’s 3 remaining launchers.

The missiles came ever closer.

When they were only a few hundred feet away…

“Full burn! Barrel roll!”

The large cruiser zoomed ahead on a sudden burst of speed, as it turned in a spiral of loops.

The missiles arrived…

Foxed by the sudden burst of speed and the maneuver, the missiles narrowly missed and hastily turned to re-acquire target. As they did, the rear end of the large Drengin Battleship ship started filling their view screen, as the enemy ship desperately maneuvered to prevent the missiles from having a lock on its relatively vulnerable top hull. But it was too late.

One of the missiles fell for it and impacted on the Star Mauler, further damaging its hull.

The other two sped towards the running Courageous.

Weapons Officer Kumar’s board gave a chirp and the Target Locked LED started flashing.

“Sir…we have a lock.”

“Initiate firing pattern Theta in 3 seconds! Level ship up by 20 degrees and change course to starboard 45 degrees!”

Exactly 3 seconds later Ashok Kumar slammed his hand down on the red firing button.

The first Photonic Torpedo slammed into the rear of the Drengin Battleship, dropping its already much-weakened aft shield, and causing extensive damage to one of it’s engines. A few seconds later the other 2 torpedoes smashed into the already mangled rear, destroying all the engines, and causing wild power surges to course through the entire length of the enemy ship.

It was over…the Drengin Battleship was dead in space.

A few seconds later a brilliant explosion tore through space, as the power surge reached the central power core. The explosion lit up space for miles around. On the surface of Jessuin II, a second sun was visible for a few seconds. Then the huge cloud of debris surged forward destroying the 2 incoming missiles.

On board the Courageous…

The bridge shook violently, and the lights dimmed somewhat as consoles exploded and damage warnings blared incessantly. The emergency lights came on, and an ominous red glow lit up the interiors. Fortunately everyone had been strapped in.

“Damage Report.”

“Sir, hull integrity down to 75 %. Medium damage to decks 3 to 7. Sensor ability has degraded to 10 % of optimum performance. One of our port launchers has been badly damaged. No fatalities.”

“Status of the other Drengin ship?”

“Destroyed sir. One of the Virginia’s torpedoes apparently sliced through the bridge, destroying the bridge crew. This allowed the Coyote to move in and finish the job without any damage. But we lost the Virginia, sir, though most of the crew made it out safely.”

The Virginia scores a direct hit on the Drengin Frigate's bridge

Commander Valorus fought to keep his face emotionless.

“Very well. Good job people! Stand down. Send in the repair teams. Scan for any survivors. Mr. Kane…take us towards the nearby Jessuin homeworld. We can repair our ships there, under the protection of the Jessuin fleet and the nearby Altairian ships. Mr. Chad, please inform the Jessuins and Altairians of our intentions. Mr. Wilson, you have the bridge.”

As he headed to the nearby Turbo-Lift, a deep sense of tiredness was enveloping his mind. They had survived the encounter with some of the Empire’s most formidable ships…but only just.

It wasn’t over yet.

thank you for the drengin point of view.

and this is just my opinion but i do not think any admiral good or bad would look down on a crew that preformed its duty including the act of self sacrifice as a waste.

Ur most welcome danielost. I wholeheartedly agree with you that to really bring out the dramatic intensity of the moment and provide a complete point of view, one must take into account both the sides of the story.

Absolutely right on this count too. If any of us were in Go'kar's place, he would have done the same. But the battlefield is a hectic and crazy place where immediate hatred of the enemy clouds over all reason. Also, all of us have a sense of moral righteousness and like to judge ppl from a lofty perch, even though we know in our heart that we would not hesitate to do the same.

I agree, Namus.

You are a very talented writer. I especially enjoy your action-sequences - they make me enjoy my own game of GC2 even more!

I would personally love to learn more about the history and the culture of the races in your writings... From YOUR creative point of view. Since you write unbiased about both the Drengin and the Terran, it wound be very intrigueing.

All that being said, I'd like to tell you that I am a writer, and that i would LOVE to write sci-fi stories at great as you do, but 1: English isen't my main language, and 2: I have no experience with sci-fi.
But I still recognise a good story, and that's exactly what you're cooking up!
Keep it up!
