The Terran Odyssey

The Terran Odyssey

Just another tale...

Okay, so here we are once again, with another tale of glory and sacrifice, but with a difference.

It is the rule of nature that all things evolve over time, get stronger and grow bigger.

Empires grow & expand, and they also wither away in the sands of time. Great civilizations are built, flourish and then are destroyed, but they leave behind indelible footprints, the traces of which are always there for the true seekers of knowledge to find.

And there has always been, and there will always be, War. War is a terrible and bloody affair, glorious, inspiring many acts of bravery and valour, but bloody nevertheless. And interstellar war is indeed a much more frightening phenomenon, with entire planetary populations decimated in the span of a single war. History is replete with innumerable legends of great Emperors and Leaders and Admirals and Generals, but it is the common sailors, the soldiers, who live, fight bravely and die…sometimes in the unforgiving harshness of cold space, or on the desolate surface of distant planets, who are truly responsible for great deeds…for building up great empires and civilizations which have stood the test of time.

This is therefore a tale of these brave souls and how they contributed to the cause of the political entity called the Terran Alliance – an attempt by humanity to become a massive star-spanning galactic entity. A collection of personal logs, mails to family members (the unedited versions), third person accounts and brief snatches of historical backgrounds - a hotchpotch which will attempt to recreate the terror, the joy, the excitement, the pride, the tragedy and the trials and tribulations of the men and women in uniform, during one of galactic history’s most blood torn yet glorious ages-the Age of the Younger Races.

Transcription of the Chancellor's "Message to the Nation"

I'm very sorry to inform you all that our beloved Namus was ambushed near the Algore System in the Yor Collective Southern Control Zone while on board his ship T.A.S. Achilles.

Besides a brief emergency message no other communication has been received.
Ships were proptly sent to the area but found only remains of a fierce battle.
There was no opportunity to find either any T.A.S. Achilles debris or of the other ships in the group.
We are further investigating the site.
We'll keep all of you informed.

Namus: M.I.A.

The great hero of the Terran Alliance, Namus, has been reported missing for several months now, and a spokesperson of the Alliance Internal Security Service has stated that, "Although it appears bleak, the AISS will not give up in the search for Namus. We shall never surrender in our search for one of the greatest of the Alliance's citizens." Alliance President Alan Bradley visited the family of Namus on Earth, and talked with the family privately for an hour. The Presidential Spokesperson said, "President Bradley has expressed his sadness to Namus' family and his own personal belief that he will be found."

Many meetings have been held by enterprising citizens offering a substantial reward for the rescue of Namus, currently standing at 5 million credits.

Location: Drengi System, Drengin Imperial Sector

Drengi. The red planet which had given birth to one of the galaxy’s most fearsome race of warriors – the Drengin.

It was not a friendly planet. No…everything from the thick red atmosphere of methane and CO2, the miles of barren plains, crisscrossed by raging rivers of lava gave the impression of death…of hell. But even in this place of despair, life flourished. Huge cities were seen all over the planet’s surface, with millions of Drengin going about their lives. This was the heart and soul of the once mighty Drengin Empire.

Despite their fearsome skills as a warrior and their advanced technology, the Empire had been beaten back by the combined forces of the Terran Alliance, Torian Confederation & Altairian Republic. Where once the Imperial Star Navy had been the most powerful force in the galaxy, now its planets had fallen one by one…until only Drengi remained.

Around the galaxy, celebrations were in full swing as humanity and its friends looked forward to a new age of peace. Sure, the Yor Collective still survived, but it was isolated now and no match for the combined strength of the galaxy’s other races. Evil, it seemed, was on the losing side.

But unknown to them and the rest of the galaxy, their lives were about to change forever as history prepared to repeat itself…

For Drengi had a secret. Hidden many hundreds of miles below the planet's surface.

----------

The room was dominated by the massive machine in the center of the room. Connected by thousands of huge wires to the walls, the red glow of the room gave the giant object an ominous twinge. Occasional waves of electricity cascaded up its base to the sphere at the top, where it crackled and disappeared. The entire machine hummed with a slight sound and vibration, eerily similar to a living organism. In fact the entire room crackled with unseen radiation and a feeling of pure unbridled and unimaginable power.

“Lord Kona…the Ra’Tok Kragaton is ready.”

The huge Drengin simply nodded, continuing to look at the magestic machine. This was the Drengin answer to the Alliance. The end of all things…and of life as everyone knew it. This was what had wiped the Arnor and a majority of the Dread Lords off the face of the universe…and it would do the same to all life currently existing in the universe.

For the Ra’Tok Kragaton, meaning Scourge of the Universe was a very ancient Precursor artifact built in the waning days of the Great War between the elder races. It was designed for one purpose only - to use the power garnered from Drengi's core to emit a psychotronic beam which would create a progressively increasing tidal wave of psychotrons, that would spread around the galaxy wiping out all organic and metallic life. It was unstoppable and it was ready.

For any other species, the idea of universal genocide would have been a terrible thing to consider. But for Lord Kona the choice was simple. For a Drengin honour was everything and what greater honour was there than to die taking all your enemies with you. And besides it was what the Dread Lords had created him for…for he was something more than mortal.

He beckoned and the die was cast. The hum intensified as the machine started shaking as more power was fed into it. Warning alarms could be heard as a red haze started enveloping the room. And then without warning a horrendously powerful beam shot out of the device, pierced through the planetary crust and out into space.

Even as the planet Drengi went dark, the beam set out on its mission of universal annihilation.

The age of the younger races had come to an end…

Well...hello everyone!! :digichet:

Sorry to have kept you all waiting for so long but RL has a nasty way of coming in your way. In case you are wondering about this last chapter, here's the explanation - my computer had once again gone bust and taken all my saved files with it. It was like one day all life as i knew it in the Galciv universe came to a (literally) crashing end. Hence the inspiration for the post...and I do like the concept of universal genocide...muhhahahahha }:)

I just wanted to thank all of you for your support. I couldn't have done this story without all the feedback and tips and guidance that you guys have provided. Many forums have i visited, but these forums are by far the friendliest that i have seen. B)

But fear not...for the Alliance lives on in spirit. A new story...based on a brand new game...coming up in a few hours! And from the looks of it, this is gonna be one action-packed one! So stay tuned...

:pout: Danielost - why didn't you bail me from the evil clutches of bertio5??

Hehehe..nice pic bertio!!!

Thanks guys!!

Whew!! The new game that I have started is the most goddamned intense one I have ever seen!! Having serious doubts whether Ill be able to survive for long!!  8C

Surrounded by the Yor, Drengin & Torians. My friends the Altairians & Arceans are on the other side of the Yor & Drengin & they are of absolutely no help. Luckily the Drengin are occupied with the Torians as usual, but they do occasionally ask for tribute. The Yor - well they declared war when I had no warships!! Went on a crash production drive. The war goes on and many ships on both sides have been destroyed...the borders are littered with debris! So far have managed to maintain a 3:1 ratio, but many of their destroyed ships were armed transports. The Yor captured 2 planets...after many months I managed to capture them back & captured one of his too which he had colonised in my territory!!  Also launched a 2-ship sneak attack on one of his mining starbases & destroyed it, despite losing one ship.^_^

To make things worse the Yor keep sending transports (having a weapons strength of 9!!!..thanx to a damned council rule that transports must be armed >:( ). I have to keep intercepting them and then send my ships to repair themselves at the nearest planet. The Yor have less planets & population - but their technology, production and fleet far exceeds mine! Right now the war is at a stalemate, but my financial situation is not too good. Building a few freighters to remedy this. Might have to raise taxes too soon. My main worry is my production rate. I will have to get better factories and I need a period of relative peace where i can upgrade my existing industries. Maybe its time to ask for peace!

And of course - the Drengin - they have the most powerful fleet and their empire stretches across the entire map from west to east (genius diffculty). So even if I may be able to take out the Yor after many many years of war...ill have to contend with them next!

*sigh* the war goes on...and so does the story...next post coming up on tuesday!

Looking on the bright side..if I do manage to survive...u guys are gonna have an epic story on ur hands!!
