Because we love the game too (1.80B)

Because we love the game too (1.80B)

Ever since GalCiv1 came out, people have commented on how personally we the developers take comments/criticism on our games. Well, yes, we do take it personally, and that's really not a bad thing. It's because we love the game. We love what we do. The GalCiv2 team is composed of workaholics, no one more so than Brad. Between our love of the game and our workaholism, we've put a lot of effort into making the game something that you want to keep playing, even years after the release. So when people start posting things like "you've ruined the game", it really is a slap in the face to us. And after having worked more hours than is really healthy for us, and then spend additional time working on second level support and reading the forums, our tempers can get a bit short. In a perfect world, people posting criticism on our forums would do so in a constructive manner rather than just posting, "OMG you've ruined the game!" To that end, I would like to thank the people who crunched numbers, sent in save games, etc..

After some discussion here at the office, we decided to put up another update to 1.8 which increases the number of habitable planets back to 1.7 levels. The code for setting the initial planet class isn't exactly the same because I decided to leave some of the tweaks Brad made to the code that picks the actual class value. This is how the code works to select the initial class of a planet:

1) It takes the value from the Number of Habitable planets spinner and uses that to calculate the Habitable Planet Factor.
2) The Habitable Planet Factor is used in a random roll to determine if the planet will be class zero.
3) If the planet is not a class zero, it does a few more random rolls to determine the non-zero class.

The part of the code that is now the same as it was in 1.7 is the code that calculates the Habitable Planet Factor, which directly impacts the number of class 0 planets. The code that is different is the code for step 3, which doesn't affect the number of non-zero planets, but the actual class values. Note that none of this code has anything to do with the planet type (toxic, heavy gravity, etc). At this time, we're not going to touch that code. I didn't even have a chance to check for other bug reports, and I won't until I get some work on Twilight of the Arnor done.

Anyway, we put this update today because we really love this game too. Just try to remember that the next time you're about to hit the submit button on that flame, ok? The less time we spend reading your flames and getting mad about them, the more time we can spend on coding.

Thanks GalCiv2 team for all the great updates and stuff! I will never have a clue what goes on under the hood of this great game but I do know that it is one of my favourite games of all time!

Thanks for the good, hard, great work. You have done more than anyone can ask for. Short of an MMO, this game has received more love than anything out there.

Maybe a global reduction of habitable planets can be made optional in the future? No doubt some of us actually found this change less devastating than the enormous disaster some vocal individuals made it sound like. Not everyone got supercomputers.

For all it is worth, the satisfied customer make very little sound. If any at all.

OMG U RUINZD TEH GME!!!!!!!

Wh0 LOvES FLaME WaRS!?!?!?!?! <:;/\^&#   >()

Ha! Just kidding. You guys are cool because you take our suggestions and error reports and use them to improve. I guess that would make Stardock a democracy then. It's tiring to see companies that ignore what people want and repackage and recycle old crap over again....and again...then again....then AGAIN...and once more to scam the die hard fans out of another dollar....and then maybe one more time.

PS: ^ Probably the most flamboyant monstrosities I'll ever slap on this forum.

Cari, will you marry me?

Neilo, I challenge you to a duel for Cari's affections.

Really Cari, I would make an excellent partner. I have many fine qualities, including:
1) The ability to kill spiders for you
2) The willingness to cheer for the Lions in your presence

I mean, what more could you ask for?

You guys Rock! i played the Game with less planets and it gave the game a little balance and it didn't crash my system. it works wonderfully with my new Geforce 7600GT,which was upgraded from a ATI Raedon 9800Pro. it took longer for other races to go to war with you and allowed you to build up forces to counter the other races. I think people were making too much DRAMA over a little detail in the game. I'M already Stoked for Twilight of the Arnor. I can't wait for the betas to come out Thursday. I know this game like the others will be money well spent. EA doesn't even come close to the level of dedication that Stardock gives to its'games. See Ya at the BETAS

Why do I suspect that in GC3 now, there will be a minor race of Spiders that are out to get the Carinoids?

Ahh i except this most worthy challenge.....

The ability to kill spiders...i would never have thought that this task is something that Cari cannot do herself...she is more powerful than you give her credit for, she will kill her own spiders...

What i can do is not only cheer for the lions but supply you with season tickets!!!

On top of this, my forum renowned Fembots will be available to your beck and call to clean your..our home and your office...plus any exterminating or assinations that you may need...

opps i have said too much...

Perhaps Cari is a Yor...that would explain a LOT. Especially her efficiency at killing other life forms, spiders mostly....look out Brad she's coming for you next!

I expected no less from a gentlemen of your breeding.

Never for a moment did I mean to imply that the fair Cari is incapable of killing the vile spiders that ambush her. But even at the best of times eliminating the arachnids is a distasteful task. I will endeavor to relieve such unnecessary nastiness from fair Cari, allowing her to focus her attentions on endeavors more fitting her talents and station.

What i can do is not only cheer for the lions but supply you with season tickets!!!

I see your season tickets and raise you one more. With the Ford family hurting along with their car company, I'll buy you the team! As a successful lawyer I make more money than God, and it will be a simple matter to assemble the investors necessary to purchase this football franchise. With that my love of football (and Cari) will be forever shown.

On top of this, my forum renowned Fembots will be available to your beck and call to clean your..our home and your office...plus any exterminating or assinations that you may need...

I cannot offer Fembots. However, I can't imagine that our dear Cari, such a precious flower, would have any need of assassinations. I can however supply you with the best in illegal alien house servants. Our mansion(s) will at all times be fully staffed by people who don't speak our language. They will be underpaid, but they will routinely steal small knicknacks, jewelry and silverware, so it will all balance out.

opps i have said too much...

And here you have slipped up good sir, and shown your uncouth nature. A gentleman never says more than is needed.

Do not mistake my words, dear Cari. It is not my intention to treat you as nothing more than a fancy bauble to be passed between us without a thought to your feelings. Should your heart be won over by one of us I will forever respect your decision. I wish for nothing more than to adore you day and night and serve your every affectation. Were there a thousand Caris, only one would be the GirlGeek - and that makes you eternally special.

In any attempt to match your most well thought out words i would fail. It is not mere word that i shall win the beloved Cari's heart with but actions. With my army of Fembots i have been able to secure myself the position of owner and manager of the enitre league, with all privaleges and rights of such a position.

My first and only act in this role is to hand full control to the wonderful Cari. You my dear foe may own the team, but Cari now owns the league.

Any acts that i a may commit though scrupulous and questionable is all out of love, a sign that i am sure the beloved Cari will surely acknowledge and admire.

High noon (slids doom ray into shirt) it is! (i never did learn to count to 20).

Fear not Cari, i shall save you from his gentlemanly wiles, and treat you as the fearsome warrior i know you to be. Now how about dinner at my place tonight, my fembots make the most tasty tor burgers....with fresh torians too!!!!!

Fembots?! You called me a WHAT?! You'll pay for that, Neilo!

"Oh, thats OK" says I while aiming my BHGC(Black Hole Generator Cannon), "I never learned to count. But I must give you fair warning though, Neilo. I am skilled in the use of heavy gunnery"
* Neilo, without replying, reaches for his Doom Ray. *
* Powers on my Ultimate Invulnerability Sheild * "Bring it, Fembot boy!"

All aside, I won't forward a marriage proposal or the ownership of a football team. I offer but a simple gesture on behalf of all the players here who adore you for all the work you have put into this game for us. With that said I would like to present to you with "one of the simple things".

Wait! This isn't the kind you're allergic to, is it?

EDIT: too cheesy, no?

I don't think so.  I'm thinking that it might have more to do with chemicals used by the florists for preservation or something because I haven't had allergic reactions to any of the flowers I"ve grown in my yard, or potted flowers that I've received.  And carnations, which are the only flowers I've had definite reactions to, are often dyed, so it could be the dye I'm allergic to.

The coolest boquet I've ever gotten came from here though:

I love strawberries, possibly even more than I love chocolate.

Also, you guys are going to make my boyfriend jealous.

Amen.

As I have said on my blog and to friends, Stardock (from Brad on down) goes above and beyond on their games. I give them my hard earned money for d*mn good reason. And I want to thank them for their efforts.

Thank you, Brad, and your crew at Stardock.

That's ok Cari, I guess we couldn't keep our relationship a secret much longer, and I think I've almost come to terms with the jealousy thing... er... ah... well, almost.

Now, will the rest of you guys cool it!

LOL, I figured that someone was going to try that!  No, particlewave is not my boyfriend, but my boyfriend IS a registered user.  He was a GC2 player before he met me. When he found my profile on Match.com, he recognized my name, so he got out his manual and checked the credits to see if it was really me.

Match.com? Seriously? The GalCiv2 forum crowd wasn't enough for you? You would have people practically begging at your feet for scraps of your affections... Now all you get is a 'boyfriend'. Ah well, some people can be happy with that, I guess...
Clarification - nothing against match.com, or online dating at all, except when there are plenty of fanboys online already to worship you.

LOL, well, we here at Stardock used to joke about contests for a date with Carielf and stuff like that but I never really advertised that I was single because I was worried that someone creepy would show up at Stardock HQ one day.

I'm crushed Cari!! (and not even a pm either)

Ohhhh... the public humiliation.

Can't...go... on!

Hmmm... a well focused shot from a psionic beam to my pre-frontal lobes should end things rather quickly (albeit a little messy, but I hear the Torians make a great clean up crew).
So long cruel Iconia!!
