quick question (universe size)

how big can one universe get (how many star systems) cuz i was wondering if in single player you could have more than 8.....just for a VERY long SINGLE PLAYER game. or i was wondering in future testing you could see what people would think about it.

"SupComFan", bumping a thread in less than an hour of its posting is rather silly. Especially given that it was probably pretty close to the top at the time you did it!

That said, the game can get very large. Back when custom random maps were still enabled (temporarily disabled for multiplayer beta) you could have up to 100 planets, spread over up to 10 stars... with default settings. You can customize the game files to increase that size to virtually any number your hardware allows.

If your hardware can handle it, you can have 100 star systems with 1 planet each... or 100 star systems with 100 planets each! (Would take modding, especially if you wanted it to be playable...)

by the way ron.....your walkthroug thing was very well done....the manual thread....thank you....i think it will help me in the times when i actually play the game...

Really there's no coding limit, if you mod something in. The limit is what your PC can handle.

Cool! Do you really mean "no coding limit" or just some outrageous size you don't ever expect people to hit, even 10 years down the line ala Total Annihilation (which has to be hacked to hit 10K+ units, and crashes if you try 50K period the end...)

TA was a much older game I would imagine Sins is designed to take pretty much any variable you throw at it and work with it without breaking the code. Granted variables tend to have different max sizes, but those are pretty ungodly huge So I guess a way, way outrageous size just because the program wouldn't have enough memory to allocate for the variable size, just a technical limitation of programming

thanks guys....a few more questions....how many ships can you have at one time...whats the limit per system or planet or max or whatever........ how many more can you have once you capture a planet.....also....is there an upkeep for units....probably stupid question because theres no turns

The default fleet point cap is 2000, which could easily get you over 300 ships (not counting fighters/bombers, they don't count towards the cap). For reference, capital ships take 40 fleet points, and individual frigates/cruisers take anywhere from 2 to 10. The limit per planet varies. Some planets specifically give larger fleet points, you can upgrade most planets' infrastructure to give more fleet points, and your influence level with the planet also modifies it. Basically, the farther the planet is from your capital, the fewer fleet points you'll get out of it, upgrades or no.

This is only for one of the three races, we really don't know how the other two will be.

And there's no upkeep.

yay....and the fleet point cap should be alot more...you know....for big maps like 4 star systems...think.......300 ships aint gonna be enough...dont you think it should be more

I said on the weekend that I didn't think this was available to be modded yet, but after looking into it further, it is

Use notepad.exe to open the gameplayconstants file and search for maxShipSlots. Change the number beside it and save the file. Make sure you have a backup because this will cause multiplayer problems.
