Empire thread --> The Gerontocracy

Empire thread --> The Gerontocracy

The Gerontocracy is here, and the universe will never be the same.

This empire is intended for players over the age of 30, hence the name of the empire. Judging by other threads, that means about 89% of us. For that other 11%, my advice is to hurry up and get older; in the meantime, though, there are plenty of other empires to join, even if they're not nearly as awesome as we are.

You can see from my best scores with each map size, that there is a strong correlation.

Impressive. Can you tell how many turns it took for above scores. With which version did you get those scores DT/DA or TA. I'm playing exclusively with ToA and can't reach such scores. May be you have some special tricks ?

With the larger maps, it sometimes takes more turns, but on tiny/small/medium, you can always finish on April 8th, which is the earliest allowed win.

I think ToA is sub-optimal for ZYWs, partially because of the lower starting money and tighter economy.

One more question, am I correct in assuming tht if you upgrade a colony ship to a transport that you keep the people/soldiers that were already on board?

Yes, You are correct. This is why I use not original colony ship, but colony ship with 500 colonists at the start.

Wow, that's good to know. I learn something new every day on these forums!

I find that kind of funny, actually.

"Wait, we're an invasion force? But I thought we were settlers..."

(I was just looking for better bonus tiles)

You mean you get better tiles with increasing map size? Make that learning two things every day!

The +700% bonus tiles never appear on tiny maps. I've played probably 150-200 ZYWs, and I never saw even one on tiny. And for some reason, which I am not sure about, the number of bonus tiles is higher also. It's probably directly related to map size & number of habitable planets. Look at these two home planets I got on gigantic ZYWs for example:

Pretty amazing!

Um, so you are getting those with fewer habitable planets, then?

Correct. Rare everything, except max anomalies and minor races.

It looks for me that it is also DT/DA specific. With ToA the best what I got (gigantic, everything rare, suicidal) was +700% and +300% (science). I also don't use file modifications, so I had 10 quality homeworld, may be this is also important.

May be one day I'll try DA/DT

Well the tactics you decribe work and I did score a win using them but its kind of taking advantage of the game mechanics. Not sure if I will do another like that I think its more fun to do the big maps and grind it out but for a change of pace its a good quick win . Thanks again for the help.

Wow a 300% food tile, you are So lucky. You can put a farm on it and build morale structuers everywhere else!!! ;)

"Wait, we're an invasion force? But I thought we were settlers..."

Thats too funny. just hand the pilgrims some guns on their way out the door.

Raises a question, i guess i've nver had the need to try this, but can you colonize a planet with a transport, without colony modules? I imagine you can.

Any strategy takes advantage of the game mechanics in some way. But I do understand what you're saying. I refrained from doing any ZYWs for a while, until my curiosity got the better of me. 70k plus points for 10-15 minutes of play does seem a bit broken.

Nope.

Overall scoring system is broken. For example I can't undestand why the same game finished as diplomatic vicroty scored twice less than as finished as military victory. (I just test this with my last game).

As for 70k+ points for 10-15 min you should also spend another 10-15 minutes to generate more or less appropriate map. But I certainly agree that ZYW is easy and fast (looks like cheating) way to increase Metaverse score. I just finished usual game with gigantic, suicidal, everything rare - military win against 4 other civs and got roughly the same score as for ZYW win.

I like more AltMeta system with separate scoring for military and civil wins, as well as for galaxy size. As far as I know there are no similar way for fast non military win.

There is a score multiplier for each victory type:

Tech 1.0
Alliance 1.5
Culture 1.75
Military 2.5

I think it's not a very good system either, as people who want to play for score, feel pushed to always go for military victory.

Thanks for clarifying the bonus KzintiPatriach. I wonder what is the thinking behind the multiplier? Did the devs intentionally make e.g. a Military victory 2.5 times as hard as a Tech victory? I'm not quite sure if I'd agree with that.

I wonder where Ascension victory fits in?

Oh my gawds and garters, people, we have some geezers clearly running down their scooter batteries. We're #4 on the AltMeta now! Number 4!

Our latest recruits have brought the lion's share of these points, but I'm guessing that they also brought some Galactic Geritol to a few old hands. I've missed my dose so far, but hopefully I'll get some decent playing time in before midsummer.

p.s. Ghostwes, I've enjoyed mocking your lack of posted games, but since you fell completely off the AltMeta chart, I've started to really enjoy the idea of the Gerontocracy being led by the Semi-Retired One (I assume you're still busy w/ MVL games).

Well, I've played quite a few games that should have showed up on the Altmeta, so we may be even higher on the chart once the problem has been fixed. That said, Kryo has not commented, so I'm not sure what's happening with that.

MVL is just restarting now; I haven't submitted a game for that since the last round, a few months ago. That said, all MVL games also count toward the Gerontocracy, or should.

hey Guys

Found a tactic that is legal if a little . . . ok a lot frustrating.

First- use one point on creativity.

Second- set your research on a bare trickle so you only use enought to set the timer.

Third- pick a set of paths through the tech tree to get what you want early and use the tech rate increase bug to freeze the computer opponents in thier tracks.

Fourth- risk carpel tunnel syndrome and reload the game over and over and over and I do mean over until you get lucky and the creativity bug kicks in.

Fifth- rinse and repeat.

It ain't pretty but it works ( I really suggest a fully programmable keyboard so you can macro as much as possible ).

Good luck

Doh! I forgot you were one of the folks suffering the Mysterious Shunning during AltMeta updates, and I'm too lazy to check the official Meta very often. Looks like you should have something near or above 100k on the books!

Kryo, are you reading here? Any chance you have time these days to keep tinkering with those weird AltMeta update gaps? (Think of this wheedling as inverted AltMeta booster talk--it is my preferred interface, except...)

That is a known exploit, which came to many of us during one of the recent Metaverse League rounds. I've never done it, but it will certainly work.

The log reports that everything has been running smoothly of late. If someone's having a particular issue with their character not listing correctly, they should PM me with details.

The details are listed above, but OK... PM on its way.

Thanks to Kryo for sorting our the altameta stats for our illustrious emperor Ghostwes. Happy to see you back on (and rocketing up) the charts!
