The Master Debate

The Master Debate

Lets all quit beating around the bush..

With any luck, the title of the post brought forth'e a few snickers and thus led you here to "Parcipitate" in this discussion. So, here we go..

No beating around the bush part:
Gef just uploaded a new Master DX Theme and is beginning to take heat because of it.
Accusations are running amok concerning Master submissions now.

The 2 sides of the argument (this here is the debate part) are:
A) " Since so and so reached a Master status, they don't put out anything for free anymore "

B) " Who cares, they have worked hard for that right and the end result will in turn dictate weather or not they made a correct decision to do this."

I myself see both sides of the coin on the issue and am kind of in the middle at the moment. Honestly, I do get a little dissappointed when I see exclusive Master content by someone though. On the other hand, it's not a bank breaking investment to buy them either. Hell, I just bought World of Warcraft, plus the expansion pack for $60, and will be shelling out $15 a month to be able to use my $60 initial investment.

The end conclusion... I don't really care! If I like it, and want it, I will buy it.

OMG i gotta laugh, it's amazing how all the fans come out the woodwork and slowly attack your comments, cos it dont flow with their thoughts...look lets get this straight if i like a theme and its free, i'll d/load it, if i like it and its a master skin i'll pay for it, which i have, i dont mind that at all. I was sayin as murex and Richard did, they are looking the same, thats all, never mentioned about money, good luck to em if they make cash from their hard work. Surely its gotta be new or fresh to sell thats what im saying.

If a master determines a similar ver saleable... that similarity may affect sales...so he'll perhaps be more creative/new next time.
So, they do NOT 'need to be new, fresh...etc'.

If Henry Ford had of followed that philosophy every one would still be driving black model T's. Funny every one is encouraged to come out with new Ideas but the masters who are suppose to be the best don't have to. Well I guess when Brad was complaining that no one was being creative all they wanted to do was build clocks and weather objects he was right.

That would actually be a good thing....the 'T' is more economical to run than Ford's current output....and has far less environmental impact....

For the record I happen to agree with you about a few skins, I believe Master Skins should go above and beyond. But again, the market will take care of itself via competition.

Its a good thing.

Threads such as this, raising concerns/debate about the concept of Masters/skin sales, etc....more sensibly should avoid specific example as it is decidedly unfair on those inadvertently caught in the spotlight

Jafo, you above all should know that it would have taken a turn to that particular item in a very very short time. It happens all the time in threads. I took it straight to the point, that's all.
Nothing rude or distasteful was aimed at Gef at all, and if you look at the item you will see exactly why I chose to explore this method.

Phoon, yes....saw the skin's comments...and understand the relocation of the debate...as a good thing.

Now it's here we can perhaps be more general and less specific, that's all...

My complaint is "There is not enough of them!" 8 dollars is pretty cheap for all the time goes into creating a theme(even if it looks like the last couple skins they created). Personally if they charged 15 to 20 dollars it still would be worth it.

Just a comment from the other side of the fence

omg , just noticed second line of Post Title..

Kinda reminds me of the old cartoon, Captain Pugwash, who's crew consisted of a Master Bates, Seaman Stains and last but not least Roger the cabin boy.

I agree totally with Phoon - if you like it you buy it! If you don't then don't...
easy as that... but seems people are so used to getting everything here for nothing. That now they have to pay to get what they want and it hurts to come up with a little cash to get what used to be free.
It's kind of like taking the candy away from the baby maybe???

But I'll always buy if I like it! Price is no big deal if it is what I like.
Things are usually better when you pay for it - that or they are suppose to be anyway.

So simple that is and so hard it is to come to the new changes.
But I totally agree Phoon and I hope the others will see the light.

Yeah, I hate it that it's centering around Gef, as that was NOT the intent at all.
I think almost every master author has seen this type of comment on their work at one time or another..

I just don't get why this is even up for discussion...Masters have been promoted not only for their commitment to the community, but also the quality of work that they contribute (and until now was free). Anyone who actually makes it to Master status deserves to have the opportunity to generate a little gain for their hard work...what a great incentive for them...anyone who complains about Masters and their Master Skins need to get over it. I mean look at the world around you and how messed up it is, complain about kids who have no food, complain about those without shelter, complain about all the corruption there is, not Master Skins...Masters - I applaud you and think it's about time you are given this opportunity...

"quote if i like it, i want it, i will buy it."

that sums up my opinion too....i concur.

Seems people just like whining. It makes them happy.

No one is forcing anybody to buy anything... i will say when i get the opportunity, I try to give back to the folks. masters like gef and others have given tons of stuff for free + time , effort, support. so whats the harm of asking for a lil retribution for a skin they are particularly proud of? I mean I would donate to the skinners if i could...and when the funds are available I do, by purchasing what i can. even if it aint much...

but I also know the feeling of seeing a skin i would love to have, but cant part with the funds at that point...so I see that part of the equasion too..

But i see no need to hold any thing against the skinners .. they have given so much but ask so little.............

My 2 cents.....
The Masters (ALL of them) have already provided a great deal of their time to the community. They deserve the accolades and appreciation of those who have benefited. They also deserve the rewards of their WORK like anyone else. If someone is willing to pay for their product, thats great. I hope they are very successful. I've got a few Master skins myself. No Complaints.

Word of warning......
To those who have attained that status and would ONLY do Master skins, you may find your faithful audience shrinking as time goes on and your older (free) skins become dated. New people who come to the site will not have "known" you like those of us who watched you become a master and therefore will be hesitant to open their wallets. Throwing a few good, free skins into the mix would help you maintain that following and benefit the community.

See, I like this. The thread has been dead for about 8 days. Then you come in. You pick a comment about 9 days old to remark on. Now, you have a few options and you chose to just be blunt and slightly derogatory...or a tad inflammatory.

And you had to do it in reference to a comment Jafo made.

So, I'm just gonna pull up a seat and some popcorn. It's not often I get to see someone walk blindly into the blades of a helicopter.

It's gooey...and it tends to hurt...

Jafo likes being analytical and stupid....it's good for the soul...

Nothing like calling someone else stupid, and giving a class A example of your own ignorance at the same time!

I think that if the skin is good enough to sell it, more power to the Skinner

BUT;

I Don't think it should just be the Master Skinners to reap all the $$$.
it Should be anyone how can make a good skin..

Like this Skin:
SD Desktop (wb) By Vad_M

you know it's like telling the new person at work, you have to work here for free for 5 to 7 years before you can start to charge for your time and effort.
You would not stay at that job, now would you?
that is what this site is doing with all the talented artiest.

oh, and what's up with not letting us know how many the Master skin has downloaded, you know it shows the Price instead of how many people have gotten it. SHOW both.

Question;
Does the Skinner get all the $$$ or have to share it with WinCustomize and/or StarDock.
If your not satisfied with your new Skin purchase you should be able to get your money back.

but may main point here is that you should be able to sell your Skin and not have to be a Master Skinner.

why, well every one that has Uploaded SkinS knows some thing about skinning and more then likely has schooling of some sort. (graphics, ADOBE or something like that) so they to have put time and effort in to

best wishes to all the Talented Skinners

P.S. TOTALLY OFF topic
where the heck do you go learn how to use Adobe PhotoShop CS2. I would like to learn how
to make skins. tried to make a bootskin from a step by step but he (By Cyberworld)left out exactly how to make the progress bar image.. not for the very very beginner..
