BSG Jumpdrive Special Effect

One unlikely effect I would love to see in the game would be true "hyperdrive" ship movement -- much like FTL in Battlestar Galactica. Basically, movement would still work the same -- ships could only travel a certain distance each turn; however, when you clicked on the spot you wanted your ship to travel it would "jump" with a cool flash of light and instantly appear in the desired location. If the desired location exceeded the movement points the ship could use that turn, it would jump as far as possible during that turn, and cover the remaining distance in subsequent jumps over following turns. While this wouldn't change gameplay at all (rather than flying from one location to another, ships would simply "jump"), I fear this would probably involve too much of a renovation to be feasible. Anybody else think this would be cool to see in game?

That would be aswome to see, but it wouldn't be changed in existing games. That would be cool in Gal civ though...

I don't see how it would be possible to mod that in. There is no existing code (to the best of my knowledge) that can be modded to add in special effects when moving.

I, personally would go with the artificial wormhole via Stargate. but that wouldn't work, with the whole "exceeding movement points" thing.

Actually, that would affect game play. As it is now, I can create a defensive line along a border or around a given area of space so that no ships can pass through without having to fight at least one battle (a good deterrent for transports). However with "jump" movement as you describe, this defensive tactic wouldn't work.

Not saying it isn't a good idea - just that it would affect game play.

Also, another thing with FTL in BSG is margin of error - if you can calculate it, you would go across the galaxy in one jump. If you can't calculate it - you can get somewhere far away in one jump, not not where you wanted to go. Reminds me of the wormhole anomalies. That could be a research item - extend the green zone where you can jump safely.
