Ship designs from around the world!

Last year, we had a thread in which people showed off some of the great ship designs they created with Galactic Civilizations II.

With the expansion pack adding so many new components and so much free form support, we'd love to see the cool things players create.

The cool thing in the expansion pack is now you can save your creations as templates and then assign the computer players to make use of those ships in various roles. Combined with the capability of creating your own custom opponents, now you can create your own sci-fi universe within GalCiv without modding.

Hey Kryo,
On your next update to you mod could you include a spherical hard point set? I love the formation and offsets but a sphere would be great for clouds of debris.

Try a cluster with multiple multi-point offsets attatched at different angles of rotation. Should give you just what you're looking for (and be more customizable too).

well, it took me a week longer than i'd planned (been busy), and it's not a complete ship pack in the sense of having a standard number of designs per hull size, but nonetheless i'm happy and proud to announce my set of ships inspired by Star Trek's Federation designs is complete. it can be downloaded here.

these have all been tested as of the 1.6 patch, and none suffer from those odd graphical glitches caused by way too many polygons (at least, not on my system: 1.6 PD, 1G RAM, 2G swap file, Radeon X600).

all designs were built on Kryo's blank hulls and make liberal use of offsets, and therefore require the newest version of KHSM for DA. several designs also make use of starbase hulls from General Pants' lights and jewelry mod.

sorry i didn't include more isometric views; it was enough work to throw these together in photoshop - i want to get back to playing!

i still playing around with a huge combat transport design, but it looks like poo. also haven't figured out names for my utility vehicles (though i usually name the freighters Smith class). feed back would be greatly appriciated!

Here is a couple more ships for you guys. I wanted to add some turrets to my combat vessels to Help fix some perceived weaknesses. All my other designs were strong on offensive weapons but really had no active defenses. These turrets shuold solve those issue as well as make them look better. These are both Huge hulls and both are metaverse compliant.

This one I like better than the first one.

@Pubmaster: Awesome designs, I can't use them cuz of INSANE amounts of lag though haha.

@dystopic: how did you make the Constellation class? That is an amazing ring!

NICE TURRETS, PubMaster! seriously. i've always wondered about making nice looking turrets.

hi GalenEvil,

thank you! i think the constellation is my favorite for originality (though i have a soft spot for the defiant since it took me like 10 tries before i figured out something that looked remotely like ST's defiant).

first, i make thorough use of KHSM, so no MV, but it actually only takes 19 pieces of jewelry to make the ring section! (not counting zero-poly offsets, that adds another 13 if i'm counting correctly).

start with a hardpoint ("HP" hereafter) cluster in the center of where the ring will be (use 1x offsets to get an HP there if you need to). you won't use all the HPs, but it'll anchor all the pieces to the same common point so you can move the whole thing.

next, add an 8x offset to that, and rotate it so that it's on the XY plane. next, put a 2x offset on one of the 8x HPs (not on all 8, not yet anyway or you'll have to resize them all individually). the 2x offset should be on the same XY plane and perpendicular to attachment HP.

add the piece of terran jewelry to each side, and rotate them so that the back ends face each other. then, resize the 2x offset so that the middle part (with three little "bridges") line up.

once they line up, click on the 2x offset and select a new one. this will ensure the size and rotation remain the same. add a 2x offset to the remaining 7 HPs of the 8x, and then repeat this step for the visible jewelry comps (pick the one on the left, click for a new one and put it on the left HP of every pair, then click on the original right one, click for a new one, and add one to every right HP in the pairs). finally, resize the 8x offset to form the ring effect.

after i got to that point, i didn't like the inside of the ring. but then i noticed the handy octagonal rings in the generic extras. my design uses 3 of them. i placed one right onto the original HP cluster. then i used another 2x offset, attached inverted 1x offsets to each end at minimal size (this will allow you to make the most minute adjustments), then attached a octa-ring to each end of the offsets. finally, resize each of the octa-rings and the new 2x so that they line up with the octagon formed by the inner sides of the first phase of construction.

did make sense? it was actually a lot easier than it looks once i figured out the basic, methodical pattern of sizing/adjusting pieces in this way. if that was totally confusing, i might have time tonight to take some screens to show you (maybe not; meeting a friend later).

Thanks GalenEvil! I was noticing the second one made the game a bit more choppy. Do people with better rigs/graphics have problems with high part content ships? I have often wondered what my ships look like on a high end system.

Thanks Dystopic! I have been working on variations for a while. I think these turned out well.

@Dystopic: I understand what you are talking about now, I am wondering if it is possible to do that without the use of KHSM, but I am too lazy to figure that out haha.
@PubMaster: Yeah, all of the stuff that you have made that I have loaded up have slowed the game down a lot. I run a Toshiba Satellite with 512 MB Ram, 2 GB Page File (this is to keep the game from slowing down too much on the larger maps). My computer is a year and a half old and it is doing what it can haha. Once I get a better rig I will try out your stuff again, just way too many pieces right now to keep it running smoothly.

Oh, I just got the 1.61 update, Stardock Central was giving me some problems...>.< So I am off to see how that goes

To anyone here that makes ships, I love them all cuz they all look friggin amazing to me

i think it could be possible for everything but the octagonal rings that i put in the center, since their attachment point is also in the center -- assuming you want to keep the center hollow. but yea, not so big on overcoming the laziness factor (it took me long enough to figure out the first time).

What about using one of the econ starbase parts? Not the halo one but the one with the handle. I am not sure howmany hardpoints it has or the configuration but it may help. Good luck!

I will try to accomplish niceness on the cheap now. With the exeption of the freighter (which I don't think I have uploaded yet) I didn't realize that my ships caused lag in games. Is it all of them? Or just the major ones?
Well, it was only pronounced with the ones with huge numbers of pieces. Nothing too bad, but this was also before all of the updates for optimization. The problem may no longer exist, but my computer is horrible. Once i get a better one I doubt I will have further problems.
with the most recent patch, some of my older ship designs with massive numbers of pieces started having major graphical rendering problems. some of my more elaborate newer ship designs slow things down a bit. from a superficial glance, i'd guess PubMaster's more elaboate designs don't have too many more pieces than some of mine (the Galaxy uses 50 of those disc components to create the appearance of a second row of windows).

when i first load those designs, i get a bit of lag. but once they're on the galaxy map, it's fine. it could indeed be more of a hardware issue you have GalenEvil.

if the ai is designing ships like this we are in trouble.

Its an unusual design for the AI as it seems to be symetrical   However the components appear to be normal.

Nice to see them actually coming up with decent designs though. Nice find Danielost!

I modified my War Wagon design by adding some ventral turrets and refining the overall look, especially the bridge area. I think I am done with it now.

Thanks, Galen. Yes, they are all weapons or weapon-related. Longinus was the name of the soldier who reported;y pierced the side of Jesus on the cross, hence the "Spear of Longinus". The gladius is a short Roman sword that more or less shares a silhouette with my frigate. A shamshir is a Persian variant of the scimitar, hence the ship name. And the Gae Bolga was the ultimate weapon of the Celtic hero Cúchulainn, sort of like a spear, but it would enter a man through one path and exit via 30, making it a messy sort of trick to pull off. In any case, it kicked a lot of ass. The rest I'll just assume are obvious to most people.

Dsytopic -
Wikipedia has a pretty good breakdown of different naval ship classes through the centuries. For the purposes of GalCiv, I like to divide them across the hull types like so:

Tiny: Satellites, drones, fighters
Small: Frigates, corvettes, corsairs
Medium: Cruisers, destroyers
Large: Battleships, battlecruisers
Huge: Dreadnoughts, carriers, miscellaneous big things

Although convention dictates classifying ships by things like length, displacement, or armament, you learn quickly from history that you can pretty much call ships whatever seems appropriate for the age.

It's usually more satisfying to name a ship after its role than its hull. For example, corvettes were typically short range coastal ships, so that would be good for a ship you intended to park in a defensive orbit. Frigates, on the other hand, are a more generic escort ship. Cruisers are for "force projection," or sticking your nose out into enemy territory. Battlecruisers are closer to a battleship, but faster and less heavily armored. Once you get larger than a battleship, you can apply whatever fun names you like, since we have no real modern day analog for huge hulls other than carriers.

To mix things up, I also like to scale ship classes up and down with a "light" and "super" prefix. So you could see a small hull "light destroyer" or large hull "light carrier" or a huge "super battleship".

Wow, seriously, upload your images to the libary man. I'd love to have half of those ships.

Heres a few designs from my current game.

Anchorage Class Starbase. Been incredibly helpful during the Drengin onslaught. Used primarily defending the frontier with the Drengin.

Cerberius Class Cruiser. Currently on my 4th Gen version.

Victory Class Frigate.

Praetoria Class Battlecruiser.

Imperium Class Dreadnought.

and finally the Invincible Class Superdreadnought. I can hardly afford this design as a result theres only 3 in my fleet.

Thats it. There might be some more later.
