So...what TBS or RTS games are your current favourites?

So...what TBS or RTS games are your current favourites?

So, spill the beans people, what are you playing now as far as turn based strategy or real time strategy games go (and what sold you on them)?

TBS: GalCiv2 DA because it's the best single player 4x turn based game I've ever played, and I've been gaming for 20-some years

RTS: Europa Universalis 2 and Crusader Kings, because they're very good historical simulations of periods I enjoy and the diversity of gameplay is huge

RTT (that's real-time tactical): Dawn of War Dark Crusade (because it's the best substitute for actually playing table top 40k I've ever found), and Rise of Nations (because it's like Civ but, IMO, somewhat better because it's more aware of its limitations)

Just went back to Heroes of Might & Magic 2. Just need a mod to balance it and stereosound to work.

How do you get stereosound to work btw?! The Heroes of Might & Magic profile in microsoft administator toolkit 5.0 makes the game perfectly playable but I can only have MIDI music! Switching to stereo and stereo with opera makes the music shut off and the game becomes slow.

TBS: Lost Empire - a really great 4X space strategy game that everyone who ever played Space Empires 4, MoO2, and Galciv2 will love! Its a true old school 4X-game with a really nice atmosphere - go check it out at www.polluxgamelab.com/lostempire - bought it saturday and have played it for like 20 hours since lol.

RTS: Dont really know - looking forward to trying Supreme Commander but I need a machine upgrade for that first.. So thats prolly gonna wait a while till Im done with Lost Empire.

Right now, I'm playing Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

The greatest sci fi strategy game ever. So ahead of its time that I [i] still rate it over GC2 and Vanilla Civ 4. ( I exclude Civ 4's mods because with the SDK it can essentially get all the features AC has and thensome) But the fact that vanilla Civ is still essentially playing catch up to AC's brilliant features is a testament to how amazing AC is.

TBS: Galactic Civilizations II. Modding is the funnest part.

RTS: Command & Conquer: Red Alert Retaliation. for the PS1 (It's Ancient). But I'd really like to have Supreme Commander. (Too bad my parents wont get me a new PC game).

TBS; GC2:DL. Yes, DL over DA. Not sure why. I do like DA, but I like DL better. PTO II on the Sega Saturn(yep still have one). Civ series.

RTS; Perimeter, 1602AD, Warcraft(s), Starcraft, Earth2150(and it's sequels), Dungeon Keeper 2...etc. I was an RTS addict for years and have many good ones I still like to play occasionally.

RTS Games, when I actually get the chance I play CnC: Generals - which has a new (for some, unpopular) twist on the series and Emperor the latest Dune Game from Westwood. Though Emperor is a fine update to the Dune RTS series, Generals is the better game.

I love them both - wish I had more time for them.

What would you consider Europa 1400? It's not a battle game, but it's real time and strategic.

TBS: Civilizations 4: Warlords (new expansion coming soon). You would probably expect me to say Galactic civilizations but I bearly played it so I can't say if I love it or not.

RTS: Ground control 2: operation exodus. I wouldn't say its my favorite, but its one of the best games I played, and it came out in 2004(!). First, it has amazing graphics (I repeat, Amazing graphics), for example, if you bombard with artillery, you can see the shots going to the sky, and if there are water you'll see thier reflection. And thats only one thing. In addition it doesn't have base building, thank god, but rather you collect AP (acqusition points) and order units into LZS (landing zones). Very good game.
As for other games - Company of heroes, maybe Warcraft 3, and there are others that I can't think of right now.

TBS: Civ4 (trying to learn to play, been out of Civs since 2), GalCiv2 DA (just got the xpack, I'm lazy!), Neverwinter Nights 2

RTS: Supreme Commander, I'm looking for something new but I might go back to Rise of Nations.

Anyone played Heroes of a Annialated Kingdoms?

TBS:

Well, I just got GalCiv II and I am really enjoying it.

VGA Planets (I am currently not in a game) - but it is the best multiplayer TBS 4x game I have every played. If you want GalCiv II for multiplayer, well this is it.
I have been playing it since the mid-late 90s.

Steel Panthers (I still have this on my laptop - great game) Wish they would redo the graphics.

John Tiller's Campagin Series (West Front / East Front ) another great TBS.

If you like TBS check out www.matrixgames.com
The publish, support, and redo some classics and well as new games. Most of them are War (Civil, WWII, others) and they have a couple of 4x games as well.

I really like what they produce.

Check them out....

I loath RTS, I want to use my brain not get into a speed contest with the dam thing - a little extreme expression but you get my drift.

Love TBS. I am a Civ4 Refugee. I still like Civ4 very much, and have been on Sid's Civilisation bandwagon almost since inception, but then came across GalCiv2 (I had never heard of GalCiv 1 - forgive me Stardock for I have sinned   ), got hooked and not looked back, it gets my vote.

I keep a "revolving list" of strategy games that I play. I usually play one until the 'magic' wears off, and then move onto something else. The good games are the ones that can draw my interest again a few months later. Most games don't 'make the cut'.

TBS: Civ IV, GalCiv II, and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic.
RTS: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, Rise of Nations, Battle Realms, Age of Mythology, and Age of Kings: The Conquerers

I find that most unsuccessful TBS games are missing a vital component (or two) that make such games fun in the first place. For a game like Disciples II, it's diplomacy and/or a robust combat system. For Warlords or Dominions, it might be graphics, or few non-combat options.

It's rare to find a good TBS game that get's most (if not all) of the basic elements (expansion, diplomacy, combat paths, non-combat paths, finance, technology advancement, etc.) For instance, I love Age of Wonders and GalCiv2, but both games have 'luke warm' diplomacy meta-games. (At least they include something, though.) By contrast, Civ IV may have excelent diplomacy options, but it's combat is unintuitive/frustrating at times. Age of Wonder's tactical combat is still incredibly fun to play.

A lot of the RTS games out there are just terrible, in my opinion. Most are Warcraft 'clones', complete with all of the limitations that made the Warcraft games utter crap to begin with: Incredibly dumb AI (so the game has to use 'cheat' bonuses in place of scripted routines), lackluster 'tech trees', uninspired/cartoonish graphics and combat (that feels like a cartoon), etc. I still detest Warcraft III to this day. Warcraft II was fun for a brief period, until more innovative games came along. I still don't understand the Starcraft phenomenon; it's easily the most overrated RTS game out there today.

Which is not to say that some of the RTS's I listed don't have problems. The Age of Empires series has had its share of problems (balance issues, 'age of buildings', and rushing/flushing strats that ended games in seconds). And RoN was in serious need of a graphics upgrade from Day One. But, on the whole, I find only certain RTS's to be of any real value, especially if they are ambitious and try to push the genre forward. (AoE III, for example, is just AoE II with a new graphics; the gameplay is the same; hence, not worth it, especially since AoE's combat hasn't changed since AoE II.) RoN is ambitious, even though it's graphics suck horribly. And games like Battle Realms are just so unique, they tend to hold up well. DoW is one of the best RTS's out there: it just has the style, polish, and overall fun to be an instant classic. (I never had that reaction to Warcraft, even though I could see Blizzard's workmanship. It's like Rise of Legends: it looks good, just not much 'game' there.)

Then there are fun RTS/TBS 'hybrid' games, like Chaos League, Freedom Force, etc. which almost defy genre categorization.

I go for originality and gameplay. If it's been done before, and I know about it, it's not going to impress me much.

For me ATM I can't get enough of Civ 4: BtS. Firaxis have made Civ 4 even better! Not really playing RTSs as with BtS AND GC2, who needs them ?

I have tried many RTS and after the first few levels trying to keep track of all the units, the building, the battles ...it just is nuts. It like a TBS on CRACK.

I am not saying I hate RTS or they are crap, they are just for the more ADD players (unlike myself). I like to think and plan - there is no planning in RTS in the later levels, it just CLICK,CLICK,CLICK......or that is the way I see it.

I just tried Company of Heroes - while the graphics are awesome and it was fun, after several levels into the game it was just crazy, my map was blinking red, I had to make more troops, move this, move that, blink blink, click click, and my anxiety escalated.

I play a couple of FPS, which I don't have a problem with - because I am responsible for myself and can hold my own in most situations (not that I am great) - but I don't suffer the CRACK ANXIETY that I do when playing a RTS.

Maybe I am just getting old...god I hate that (I have stop celebrating my birthday for the last several years) I had to ask my wife how old I am....YIKES! I hate getting OLD!

I have games in Armageddon Empires going, and Civ 4 (Beyond the Sword xpack). I also have Lost Empire, but haven't played it for a little while.

The only rts I really play is Europa Universalis 3.

Another great game is Total Extreme Wrestling.

My MMO of choice is Lord of the Rings Online, but also playing Planetside again.

For TBS, I've been playing GC2:DA. While I'm not terribly good at it (I end up getting bored with some of the micromanagement sometimes, and thus find a sub-optimal strategy I can stick too long term rather than swapping between multiple short term strategies), I find it incredibly fun. I just keep the skill down some so I can win a fair amount of games, rather than trying to play suicidal. >.>

RTS, I haven't played many recently. I've got the urge to play Dawn of War again, and I'd really, really like to play Supereme Commander and C&C3, but my current PC is... well, lets just say it's one step up from having vaccum tubes. I plan to build another one, but I just don't have the free cash right now. Paying for college classes and the like has me wiped out.

I'm not much of a TBS player. No offense to the legions of fans or the Stardock team, but I got a copy of GalCiv2 with a bundle of games I bought on eBay a while back, and the campaign has yet to sink its hooks into me. I just think different kinds of people appreciate RTS versus TBS gameplay. My brother loves the Civ games and I've never picked one up. When I gave him a spare copy of AoE III I had at home, he was intrigued by it but a bit intimidated too.

So, I'll pick up GC2 every now and again and play a scenario or two. I actually prefer Disciples II Gold for TBS gameplay.

I'm mainly playing Armies of Exigo in the RTS realm at the moment. I really think it was highly underrated when it came out, just chucked on the shelf as another Warcraft clone. The graphics are nice and the story's pretty interesting. I just started the third campaign.

Well, I am "old" and so with kids intermediate through high school and job I do not get to play like I did in the glory days. But when I do it currently is GalCiv2 and Battle for Middle-Earth with a little Empire at War sprinkled in for the Star Wars geek within.
As a side note, non TBS usually is WarRock, Battlefront2 (that star wars geek thing again) and still working on finishing Half-Life 2.

RTS: Battle for Middle Earth, 1 and 2. Guys, if you pause the game (Battle for middle earth 1) and type "The army", you get 500,000 command points! I also play a bit of Star Wars: Empire at War. Land Combat is lame. I'd like to get Supreme Commander, but my computer sucks. (It has a freakin' geforce 5200!)

TBS: Galciv2 is my currant all time favorite. I've even written short stories about it!
