So...what TBS or RTS games are your current favourites?

So, spill the beans people, what are you playing now as far as turn based strategy or real time strategy games go (and what sold you on them)?

For TBS: GalCiv2, MOO2 was one of the first games to really hook me, and it was an easy transistion.

For RTS: DEFCON, by Introversion. Cool concept, excellent execution, and amazing atmosphere combined with a great demo. I played the demo for about a week, then bought the full version.

I have to say GalCiv2 and Rise of Nations. GalCiv2 was actually just a shot in the dark, I just wanted a space strategy game. I had picked up MOO3 and not really liked its layout, Empire at War was too simplistic, and GalCiv was just sitting there on a shelf. And RoN is, to me, the best of the Age of Empires creators. It has the most content (going from around the post Bronze age to current time) and the AI is good for the combat part of the game.

Puerto Rico - a so so commercial implementation (by Dartmoor - Reactor 2004) of an extremely popular strategy board game. As such it is a turn-based strategy game where resources are managed and shipped, and buildings built all for victory points. I like managing resources.

I have been waiting UFO:AL like a rising moon, that games demo really convinced me that Altar is getting better with is UFO series. I dunno exactly is it RTS or TBS. It has kinda system like Defcon, you can speed up time, slow it down or Pause fully.

MTW2 was a huge let down for me personally and wont be buying CA games anymore, atleast not before reading the forums. The game is basicly RTW with new graphics and thats it. CA really should take an example of developers like SD who can cough up more features in a expansion pack than CA can manage in 2 year long development of whole new "game".

GalCiv II and Medieval: total warII, no question.

I've just discovered Imperialism. Ten years after it's release . Very involving turn based empire management sort of game. Between it and GC2 I think I've forgotten how to sleep.

Real-time games aren't my bag, not enough coffee I guess, but I still boot up Gettysberg now and again. Slow enough paced for an old man like me I guess.

Hi ALL.

For TBS games it GC2 ...

On the RTS game I'm been playing a game called Spring. It's a GNC open source
RTS game based around TA. A game worth trying IMO ....

On the TBS front, I've been playing nothing but Dominions 3

since I discovered it a few months ago. It's incredibly good if you're a fan of gameplay over graphics. The graphics isn't the best though...

Edit: Now I think about it, I actually discovered it from one of Frogboy's posts. Go Frogboy!

For TBS, just a couple weeks ago I finished up a game of X-Com, the greatest TBS of all time. But I had just gotten a big paycheck and decided to buy GC2...and have been playing that ever since.

I haven't played any RTS games in a couple months, but the most recent was Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. I had liked the previous Dawn of War incarnations, and decided to get DC when it first came out. It was well worth the money.

Great responses! Some very interesting games you are all playing.

I'm playing GC2 of course, also playing some other excellent TBS games like... Disciples II /gold edition, Age of Wonders /Shadow Magic, Silent Storm /gold edition (more of a squad based TBS though, but fills the void for my old favourite: X-Com UFO Defence), and trying really, really hard to get back into the original Europa Universalis game again. I gave up on this game several times and have installed it again for a THIRD TIME! I know it is very deep as far as strategy games go, but maybe it's just me, but I have a hard time with the interface...any one else ever play this game with any success? I hate giving up on a game (although I did give up on an older game called "Gangsters", but that wasn't me... that game was just awful).

Cheers everyone!

GC2 of course for TBS.

I'm still loving Rise of Nations:Thrones and Patriots for RTS. And CnC Generals:Zero Hour. What I like about RTS in general over TBS is that your games don't take freaking 20 hours to play.

RTS: Warhammer 40K (although I'm quickly getting bored)
TBS: GalCiv2, Chess
TBS+RTT: Rome Total War

(TBS+RTT = Turn-Based Strategy plus Real Time Tactical)

TBS: None.
RTS: Warhammer 40.000 Dark Crusade | Warlords BattleCry III | Majesty and a little StarCraft from time to time.

Looking for opponents in Dark Crusade.

I've been playing a game called UFO: Afterlight, which is very good (sorta like squad-based TBS, but uses a superior (IMO) system called SAS - which is sorta like real time but everything your units do takes time, like in TBS, you can pause anytime you like with full control, and you can play the game in ultra slow motion for perfect control over tactical battles. So you get the same effect as TBS but it all resolves in real time and you can easily change a solders orders (or plan - series of orders) as situations demand. It has an excellent global/strategic layer too. Cool base management, research, production, and expansion design.

UFO: Afterlight is somewhat like the good old X-COM games, and a lot of old X-COM players play it. Some people even get confused and think they're the same series.

Aftershock, the previous "UFO" game, was good, but buggy and it had performance issues - Afterlight is vastly superior.

I thought Silent Storm was ok - it was fun to play for lack of any other squad based tactical TBS types of options (til I found Aftershock). The incredibly poor AI in Silent Storm and the time it takes for AI to do anything on it's turn makes SS tedious to me. I still had a lot of fun with it for a long time. The interesting character development, missions, and rich WWII flavor help lessen the impact of the utterly horrible AI.

I love squad-based tactical games like X-COM, Silent Storm, and the UFO series. I wish more companies would develop quality titles in the genre. (I never cared for the commando series - too rigid for me).

Another good TBS game that people might've missed, and that's not a squad-based tactical, is a game called "Shattered Union" - reminds me of the old "Fortress America" board game sorta - but on steroids. USA is split into different factions and you have to take over the country, with an army of modern forces you build up with funds you get for controlling territory. The focus is on the battles (ie, outside of your budget there isn't much else going on when you're not fighting in a territory).

And of course, I've been playing GC2:DA, but I'm taking a break while enjoying Afterlight, and sorta holding off on more DA til there's a patch. DA is plenty playable, but some of the bugs I've encountered are irritating enough drop DA down the priority list for now. :-/

I've been playing WarFront Turning point latley for RTS. It's ok. I'm kind of bummered out about hearing that C&C 3 Tiberium Wars is actually using the same engine as Generals with updated skins. GalCiv2 DA is still my number one TBS game.

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, Majesty the Northern Expansion, occasional Starcraft: brood war and Warcraft 3 for RTS

Civ 3 for TBS

Of them all Dawn of War may be my favorite strategy game of all time as it portrays Warhammer 40K very well and it's the best in the series. I was brought in with the orignal Dawn of War just by the allure of a WH40K RTS and I've stayed with it because it remains fun. Great skirmish mode, great balance work, and the "campaign" is just perfect.

My second favorite has to be Majesty because it's simple and easy to play, a great game to just relax with. That I picked up a while ago because it looked interesting as hell and I haven't stopped since, amazing and unique game. Now if only the promised sequal was ever made.

Civ 3 for TBS

For some reason, I was never really able to get into Civ 3. I mostly stuck to Civ2 and Call to Power until CivIV came out.

As for games I'm playing now, I'm mostly playing Rome:Total War (with Rome:Total Realism mod), and Galciv2.

I've also been playing a ton of Oblivion still, although I know it isn't in the genre's you requested.

Master of Orion III, GalCiv, Civ3 and Spartan for TBS

Glory of the roman empire, Celtic Kings and Knights of Honor for RTS

TBS games I've been playing lately:
X-Com: Easily the best game ever made IMHO. The turn based elements are just plain fun, plus the base management makes the game so much meatier, especially since it allows you to research and use the aliens' technologies against them.

Civilization III: I haven't played 4 yet, but Civilization II is my #2 favourite game of all time. However I do enjoy Civ3 very much and it's hard to go back to II because I'm so used to III now.

Galactic Civilizations II: For me, this is the best game of its kind since Master of Orion II. I love the amount of customization you can give your race/units, and the numerous numbers of ways to winning.

RTS games I've been playing lately:
WarCraft III: Mainly for its custom maps, although the game itself is awesome too. I just love how the game can be changed so completely in the custom maps.

Ground Control: I just got it a couple of days ago because it's free. It's actually really good, and allows you to focus on just the strategy part, not the base building part. I'm thoroughly enjoying this since I've always wanted to play an RTS to actually be centered on strategy (formation/placing of units, etc), rather than just massing units.

1503 AD: It's a different kind of RTS game. Part city building sim, part combat; a little like the Caesar games. It's a pretty deep game and is quite fun once you get the hang of it.

For TBS, Id have to say Gal Civ 2 Gold Edition, followed by Civ 3. And for RTS... I dont play much of them, but Id have to say Rise of Legends, since its not a generic fantasy RTS, and the I love the steampunk aspect of the Vinci. Oh, and Warhammer 40K Dark crusade with the Annihilation mod. XD
