My heart is broken. Today Socrates dumped my coffee cup over in the floor. I set aside my laptop and started cleaning up the mess when he jumped on the laptop and broke off one of the keys from the keyboard. I was angry and yelled at him for it.

I guess he was upset or scared from my yelling at him because when I opened the door to get out of the truck he jumped out. I tried to catch him but wasn't able to do so. The poor little guy ran under the wheels of another truck before I could stop him.

I shouldn't have yelled at him like that. I feel terrible.

Jen, it's a nice story, poem, idea, whatever you want to call it, but it drives the hurt home in a big way. I can't read it without tearing up like a big wimp.

It was an accident, Mason.  Hindsight is always 20/20. There is no way that you could have known how he would have reacted, and there is no way to train an animal without showing your disappointment.

I am so sorry for your loss, but beating yourself up about it won't help anyone, and it can't change what happened.  All you can do is think about the good time he had when alive, and not dwell on the "should haves and shouldn't haves".

Tears are good Mason - they are a part of the healing process - I am one that believes even men should cry if they have to....you want to cry - you go for it and cry....it helps.
