Misspellings and such bother me too, but not because I'm a nitpicker. Most of us learn spelling by reading, and seeing the words in print over and over. Misspelled words then simply don't look right, without having to consciously know how to spell a given word. However, if we see a word spelled incorrectly enough times, it starts to look as correct as the proper spelling. Bad spelling is contagious!
That's the reason I dislike it. As someone who has to write scientific articles for publication, I'm worried my own spelling will go downhill. I try not to point it out though, for the reasons Mumblefratz lists. I just grumble quietly.
