Galactic Civilizations II: Known Issues / How to get support

Read this please

If you are having problems installing from the CD-ROMs, try copying the files from the CDs to your hard drive and then run the installation from your hard drive.  If you are having problems activating GalCiv2, please read this sticky post:

If you have any other problems installing or activating GalCiv2 and you can't find an answer in a sticky post, please e-mail [email protected]

With all the hardware and configurations out there, it's inevitable that some people are going to run into a problem.  The most important thing to bear in mind that if something is happening for you, it may not be happening for anyone else. Our job is to do our best to make sure the game works perfectly for you.

When you have a problem, the best tools you have is the debug.err that is in the GalCiv2 directory. It will tell us virtually everything we need.  In addition, you can install Smart Exception from Stardock Central (see downloads section here) from the "free stuff" in Stardock Central. If you have that running and GalCiv II crashes or something, it will create a file that will tell us exactly where.

So that we're on the same page - the game should never crash on you. As far as we know, there are zero crash bugs in Galactic Civilizations II.

The first thing to always do is to make sure you have the latest version of the game.

#1 Game crashes immediately.

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: Running your desktop at below 1024x768 or running your desktop in 16-bit color.  This resolves 99% of users.  Check your debug.err and make sure you're not running at some really low resolution.

#2 Game crashes randomly while playing!

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: People with older video drivers. We weren't kidding, you MUST HAVE A RECENT (past year) set of video drivers. If you don't, the game will crash randomly. The readme says this. The stickies say this. We're not kidding around here. You must update your video drivers. Ignoring all that and running into the forum and saying "How could they ship this piece of #$@#!" is not going to update your video driver. You must update the video driver.

Ex: If you're running the nvidia 81.95 drivers, update them to 81.98 or better.

You also absolutely must be running at 1024x768 or higher. That means both X and Y must be equal to or greater than those two numbers.

Next most common cause: People who have eliminated their page file or have a very small page file.  That's your virtual memory.  Check the debug.err and near the top it will say how much virtual memory you have allocated. If it's less than a gig (heck, nowadays you should have at least 2 gigs for virtual memory) then there's your problem.

Next most common cause: Overheating. The game's 3D engine has no polygon count limit, no texture limit. It's designed so that even 2 years from now, you can with mods plug in advanced textures. Some modders have already put in ships from popular sci-fi movies that have over a million polygons and it works.  But it comes at a cost: Your video cards are fully utilized. And that can translate to heat.  This mostly affects people who have built their own machines and thrown in a powerful video card.  Version 1.0X (and later) support GPU throttling which should solve this.

Next most common cause: People with AMD64 Dual Core who haven't updated their chipset drivers. GO here, get your drivers, play game, have fun.

#3 You lose your mouse pointer

People with nVidia Geforce 6X series cards (for the most part) have reported this. We have yet to get it in our internal lab and it doesn't seem to be that wide spread but it's a real show stopper.  The solution is to use the hardware mouse cursor which is in the video options area of the game.

OTHER TIPS:

Read the stickies! Post your debug.err.  Or at the very least tell us what kind of computer you have (though debug.err will tell us all about your computer).

For more troubleshooting tips, please read this sticky:

Double crap. That's not cool when you can't even really play. I was scared a little, too, because I haven't built a new comp for like 3 years, maybe 3 and 1/2. This one was groovy then, the 3 to 6 month envy of all my pals, but now? 3 years on a comp without major upgrades (I have only replaced the board and the cpu, even the video card is the Radeon 9800 which was the bomb back then, but now?) its like saying I mow the lawn the lawn with these awesome scissors I made while your neighbor screams by on some lawn tractor hog. It's very cool, though, to see the way folks in this forum actually try to help, seriously try, not just chucking standard "Is it plugged in?" lines at folks requesting assistance with issues. You don't find that everywhere.

In case you're wondering (though it seems you've already figured it out), a Radeon 9000 series card is just fine. I have a 9600xt in my desktop myself, and a 9000IGP in my laptop.

You're right protolon. I guess i'm back to my first computer. (Sigh)

I just purchased the game using the download option. My problem is that I get streaks across the screen when the game is running...kinda like shooting stars. I've uninstalled and re-installed the game with no luck. Here's my debug.err...

Press the printscreen key on your keyboard, then switch out to paint or any other graphics program. Paste the image in, save it, then go to http://imageshack.us and upload, then post the link here.

OK, hope this works.

On some of the images I captured, the streaks didn't show. I've uploaded a couple that do show, although not as bad as during the game. The streaks move quickly across the screen.

That's definitely odd... I don't see any obvious issues in your system config though--I'll tag this thread for the devs to look at on Monday, though, and see if they have any ideas.

Many thanks...it sure is refreshing to have responsive service from a software company. I really appreciate it.

One thought I had is perhaps the problem might just be with my downloaded version. I also ordered the game by mail, and once that arrives I planned on re-installing the game.

I'll keep an eye on this thread, hopefully there'll be a solution - this is a great looking game!

Thanks again.

beeg2424:

We have seen this before and it's a driver issue.  Go to www.nvidia.com and make sure that you download the latest drivers.  Then use this tool http://www.drivercleaner.net/ to remove your current drivers. Reboot after uninstalling the drivers, and cancel out of the Found Hardware Wizard when you get back into Windows.  Then install the drivers you downloaded.

It worked! Thank you so much, you folks are the best. I didn't need to use the drive cleaner program, but thanks for being thorough.

I'm off to bag some Dread Lords !!!

Bought this great game last week. Loaded into comp. and found it didn't work... sigh. So I went online and found your awesome sight. Downloaded your 1.4 patch ran program which went online to re-register. Bang game was up and running fantasticly. Played about 5-6 hours had auto saves on and also saved game at end of night... The next morning woke early to get an hour in before work and when I started game immediately saw something wrong, The start up screen and all subsiquent screens show only left half of the picture. also when you get to options screen you can see options but instead of being incased in a white semi oval the letters were black and some hard to read. And when I loaded save game was only able to see left side of screen as if it went to widescreen of sorts. Sooo I removed game and all components re-installed which didn't run yet ran 1.4 patch and It was running great again. found out that when I have saves or ship saves game no longer works when shut down. Asked fo help on another forum and he suggested to look at prefs to make sure I had 1024X768 which I did also about chaning fullscreen=1 to =0 which I changed to no avail. I dont get any Debug errors.... So I had just played a game by playing then hitting windows key then put comp in sleep mode to play again, with hopes of no brownouts or blackouts LOL but Had to keep comp on for days which sucks! Please help if you can and Mucho thanks ahead of time Mavrick South

Did you use the Windows XP hibernate function or did you re-start the game in the morning? I run on a below-spec system that generally works OK with the fancy graphics turned off, but many of the problems I've seen seem to appear after waking my Windows XP system up from hibernation.
As far as problems go I had shut down computer as norm. But to play for days I turned off hibernation where hard drive doesn't turn off but goes into semi sleep mode ie: saves power exc. But the prob. is when I shut down and try to play again or resume my save when I click on icon the game starts with no picture on intro but can hear sounds and voice intro... and then I left click and go to setup screen which does not look like org. did. and if I start new or old game it only shows part of screen as if it expanded up or something. And again unfortunitly I don't get any debug errors.... HHHEEELLLPPP lol please. Mavrick South

I'm having a strange issue involving the mouse pointer. At startup, the windows taskbar is layering itself over the game (flashing on and off the screen) whenever I move the mouse pointer, and the mouse pointer will only cover that aria of the screen and not move to the rest of the game. Your solution at this time is to switch the pointer configuration in-game to the hardware pointer, but that's somewhat impossible as long as I can't move the pointer to the options button to begin with.

Two obvious solutions come to mind: If the file that stores the configuration can be opened with notepad/wordpad I'd just need to know where it is, what part controls pointer configuration, and what value to change it two. The other is running the game in windowed mode. Are either of these possible?

To set these two options manually, just open prefs.ini which is located in My Documents/My Games/GalCiv2. To run the game in a window, set Fullscreen=0, and to enable hardware mouse, use HardwareMouseCursor=1.

FYI, if you set the game's resolution (also possible in prefs.ini) to the same as your desktop, and disbale fullscreen, it will still look like fullscreen but have the advantages of a window (fast alt-tab switching and fixing some issues some systems have with displaying in fullscreen).

The game generates a debug.err file every time it runs, problems or no. You can find it at C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2. Though for the problem you're having, setting the game to run in a desktop-sized window has fixed the stretching-off-screen issue for everyone else who has reported it, so I'm not sure how it could not be working for you.
Because this just seems like an entirely common bug here it goes.

After about 5-20 minutes of playing GalCiv2(patched) things in little view windows such as ships in the shipyard, planets in the top left in the colony screens, and a couple other things that spin in their windows begin to spin wildly.

Soon after it advances to making my screen go crazy and teleport and move around wildly when I scroll by using the normal cursor against the side of the screen method.

Not too long ago unexpectedly my game suddenly crashed.(Which as said is DEFINETLY not supposed to happen.)

This seems like a pretty simple problem so I thought I would go with just these details.
The super-fast spinning things issue is caused by dual core processors without proper driver/bios updates. See this thread for more info; you may also need to check your motherboard manufacturer's website for a BIOS update.

How do I open up debug errors file? I do see a file but can't open it to send to you... Thanks again Mavrick South P.S. how do I set screen to run in desk top settings?

If windows asks you what to open it with, just pick notepad from the list. Alternately just rename the file to debug.txt and double-click it. Once we see your system specs there we can advise what settings to use.

First off, you should be aware that your video card does not meet the game's minimum requirement. If you update your drivers though, it should run though it won't be pretty since a number of the graphic features the game expects are not supported on your card.

You can get the latest drviers here.

If your problem continues after updating your drivers, post back here again.
