Unable to log onto forums in FF and IE

Unable to log onto forums in FF and IE

This has been an ongoing problem I have mentioned in other threads. Now, it's gotten worse and it won't go away.

First, when I go to the main page, the resolutuion seems off and it's not centered. Before, I would not be able to sign on when it did this and had to refresh to get it back to normal. Now I can sign on, but it still runs off my screen.

When I try to log into forums on IE and FF, this is what I get.

The little 'nickname' window vanishes after 3 or 4 seconds and I am left with just the regular sign in windows which will not sign me in. I don't get an error or any message, it just won't sign me in.

Now, I have the NoScript extension on FF ALLOWING WC, SD and everything connected. I have ZA and allow all but THIRD party cookies. I have tried shutting both off. I have tried allowing 3rd party cookies. I have tried signing on with my nick and my email. Nothing will sign me inot the forums on FF or IE. None of my settings have been altered in months, except for the things listed that I have tried to get signed on. I'm getting so freakin frustrated with this. It just seems as soon as something is fixed or added or changed, I have new problems or old ones come back. Thids is the only site that I run into these kinds of problems with, the ones mentioned here and then the on and off again avatar problem, quote problem, image link problem...etc.

Please...puh-leeze tell me it can be fixed or it's gonna end soon.

Sorry for the lengthy whine. I realize I have broken my own rule here.

FF is working fine with me and I have NoScript. Sorry to hear you're having problems with it but if anyone can help you then I'm sure it's yrag.

The latest version of FF is 1.5.0.5 - You can get it from here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Mozilla_Firefox_for_Windows/1032985422/1

Well, that eliminates your firewall and I doubt it's your AV program (whatever it is). I don't know what's up with that Main page shot, but your original post has me intrigued. Are you using font sizes on your machine other then default?

No.

Ok, I'll assume the DPI is set at 96.

Let's try something. First, uninstall the script extension.

Enable JavaScript. (Firefox: Tools -> Options -> Content -> Enable JavaScript

Make sure scripts can resize windows. (Firefox: Tools -> Options -> Content -> Advanced JavaScript settings

Type: javascript:top.resizeTo(640,480) into the Location Bar and press Enter. (change the two numbers to whatever your resolution is)

See if the Wincustomize site now shows correctly.

All those settings were already as you listed. I assume they were the default ones, because I never mes with them. I typed in what you had javascript:top.resizeTo(640,480), adjusting the resolution to javascript:top.resizeTo(1024,768) and as you can see, no go.

Forgetting that I am getting that odd page when I log on, when I finally do get logged on and the resolution is off...this may sound really stupid on my part, but could the resolution be off because of the Inspiration in Glass Final 1.5 (alien release)
for WindowBlinds
post in popular skins area? Kind of like when a forum post goes too big and causes the same thing to happen on the forum pages (the old ones, haven't seen it happen in the new ones). I just noticed that the 'title' for the skin is a little longer than most you see posted.

At this point, nothing is 'stupid'. There's not a lot of commonality between IE and FF and Java is one (and we have now eliminated that). Fonts is another. (look in Display/ Settings/ Advanced/ General: DPI should be 96). That aside, the skin could be the problem...change it and find out. The fonts in you're original post look 'enlarged' and if that's the case, it would account for the over-sized page and the distortion....maybe

...ya know, I just realized what you were actually referring to versus what I thought you asked in regards to a WB skin you had installed. Sometimes I'm a little slow on the uptake....
Having said that, you're still looking for a common denominator and a particular skin could well be it (whatever you're using).

Oh yeah,....you were right and I was wrong....that was stupid .....

I don't mean the skin I have installed...
I mean the actual posting on the main page in Popular Skins of Inspiration in Glass Final 1.5,,,notice how much wider the text extends beneath the thumbnail than the others. I have seen a few forum posts that ran wide like this and would change the setting of the whole page til a mod would come in and fix it.

yes, honey, I understood on my second read of your #32 post ...as noted in #34.

To answer your question, no. it's not possible. Even if it was, we'd all be subjected to it (you're just not that special).

The page (when I load it in FF) seems to dynamically resize. My guess is, if it didn't, then mine would be oversize. So the question is, why isn't yours.

This has to be something simple and something that only your machine has (maybe you are special). No one else has this problem...even the ones that are using the NoScript. The fact that IE and FF are both affected means that it is a system setting, either by a security program or a registry/tweak app (I don't think Windows is doing it). I took note that you have toolbars loaded...I'd start with them. particularly if you use the same one in both browsers. Failing that, I would take both browsers to absolute default with as little security (except your firewall and AV) loaded and see if the problem persists. If not, add them back in one at a time until the problem returns.

Failing all the above, sit down, have a drink ....and shoot the bastard.

Now do you believe me Po'?

regarding your shot in comment #21 - the polls - I don't get that, I get vote options instead. refreshing 3-6 times sometimes works. else I pull down bookmarks, hit WC again and the page loads with me logged in. Been happening about 3-4 days now.

Just to add to the confusion, I have also seen two instances of the image shown in comment #21.

Once the other day, and once tonight after clearing all cookies and internet files and then logging on.

After closing the browser and re-opening I was logged on looking at a the home page with all information but the images (which were all displaying the lovely small red "X" in a white box). A subsequent clicking of the "Forums" tab revealed left side topic labels (similar to what we now see when clicking a name in the posts - text-wise).

A second closing and reopening sorted it.

Running IE current 6.0.2900.2180.

I am assuming a cookie writing anomalie.

Po',

Just out of curiosity, if you open notepad and type something, then save it as a ".js" extension. What program is currently set to open it with?

By default, it should be "Microsoft (r) Windows Based Script Host" - A.K.A. "C:\WINDOWS\System32\wscript.exe".

If you are going to go back to all defaults, I would suggest setting this one as well. If the program set to open is different, you can use the "Change" and then "Browse" button if needed, under the ".js" file properties to navigate to the "wscript.exe" and select it - making sure to check the box "Always use the selected program to open this type of file".

Note - I am not a coder, so do not know if this support extends into both browsers, but I have seen the resizing of the wider posts in action, so it should be happening for you under normal circumstances.

Tried it and it is what you say it should be.

Kinda nervous about going back to all defaults. Like I said, I don't mess with any settings. I'm afraid of doing something I can't undo and having to wipe my drive and reinstall everything.

Bichur and Corky, thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one experiencing the other problems.

I guess I'm going to have to go through all my apps one by one.

Po', is there any way you could get onto the Stardock IRC channel in the morning (stardock time) sometime this next week? You could probably get a conversation with Andrew_ about this problem, and we could troubleshoot in real-time to see if we can get this solved for you.

Sorry for all the problems you are having... there seems to be some major issues at hand, and some of the symptoms of 'normal' behavior you describe arent even the norm for me, so I would like to figure out whats going on.

Sure.

Sorry for all the problems you are having.

I love the site or I'd been gone long ago. I can deal with it for as long as it takes. I greatly apreciate any time that you all take on this, I know you have bigger fish to fry.

although...I wonder how much more I can take before I climb a tower, naked and covered in vaseline, with a high powered slingshot.

This just started and I can't refresh out of this one.

LOL Fight

* The vaseline makes the incoming bullets 'slide' right over you.

P.S. Got my first error when I tried to go from this page to the main page, if this helps you to help me.

What is that 'XML' over your 'Logout' tab? Stardock RSS feed or RSS Reader?

This what I get when I click on it...

If I scroll past what you se, it has all my articles from here and JU starting with the most recent going back to March 17 of this year.

hey Po'

have you tried creating a new login, and seeing if you can login to wincustomise as the new user, and if you get the same problems?

just thought you would like something else to try
Reply #47 Top
That's the Stardock feed. Shouldn't be a problem.

I tried a few things on one of my guinea pig machines and I can 'almost' replicate your problem. Open FF to the forum page (logged in or out doesn't matter). In the FF/ Tool/ JavaScript Console under errors, hit clear. Refresh the forum page and open the console again. You should have a handful of 'Declaration Skipped' errors. If you have a ton of errors and/or they don't say that (IE will be doing the same thing), re-install Java 5.0 update 7....and get rid of those script stoppers.

Now, if there's nothing else....I'm off to the cabana...

I've gotten to this thread in a very round about way. I finally logged in using FF, but it's been difficult. I haven't been able to log in for 3 days now. I get the sme page as Po in post 21. I cannot log in under IE7 or Opera. I also had problems this morning with FF but I finally managed to log in.

I've tried most of the things that have been sugested on this thread, including deleting all cookies and temp files plus creating a new account to try to log on, but nothing has worked. I'm considering doing a system restore but really don't want to have to, and I'm not even sure if that will work.

Any more suggestions?

yrag, this is what I get after doing the clear. is it what it should be, or do I need to reinstall java?

I'm trying the same thing Po' and I got similar results. I can now log onto WC using FF but not IE7. On IE7 I donot see all those declaration skipped or dropped messages. But I cllicked clear any ways and nothing happened. Tried refreshing and still no change but that's on IE7 only.
