Can't activate or register the game? See here first!

If you are unable to activate or register the game (via SDC, or after installing the latest patch), you're likely encountering one of a few common problems.

1) Your game came with NO serials at all.
There have been some reports of legitimate retail copies of the game not coming with a serial key at all. If you are sure your copy is legitimate and it did not come with ANY serials, contact [email protected].

2) You're using the wrong serial.
This is a simple but common mistake. The Collector's/Limited Editions of the game normally include two serial keys (one for the game, one to unlock the special extra content). Be sure you're not trying to register with the CE serial (the one that begins with GC2). Use the other one which consist of 28 letters/numbers (A-F and 0-9 ONLY) with no dashes.

3) You bought a used copy of the game.
If you (intentionally or not) bought a used copy of the game, you may receive a message when attempting to register/activate to the effect of the serial already being in use, or your email address not matching the one the game was originally registered with. Stardock will not remove an activated serial from the original owner's account and give it to you.

You have a few options in this case. You can:
  • Keep the game and stick with the 1.0 version on the disc.
  • Return the game to the place of purchase. Some retailers still accept returns, especially if they resold to you a returned copy that the original owner has effectively pirated (resale is prohibited by the EULA).
  • Contact stardock support ([email protected]) and ask about pruchasing a new serial code at reduced cost.

4) You bought the European Limited Edition.

Some copies of the Limited Edition of the game distributed in Europe were shipped with only the code to unlock the special Ltd. content, (beginning with GC2) and not an actual game serial. You can request a game serial by providing your Limited/Collector's Edition serial and email address on this form: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx

5) You bought the US Collector's or Standard Edition in June or later.
There have been several production runs that shipped to retail in the US without the correct keys. Some Collector's Editions shipped to WalMart and Fred Meyers included two CE keys (beginning with GC2-), but no game serial. Some Standard Editions have shipped to Best Buy and other retailers with a single CE key and nothing else.

In either case, please first try inputting your serial and email address on the European serial exchange page, which has been updated to include most of the serials from these production runs: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx. If that does not work, please contact [email protected] with your problem and they will provide you a game serial to use.

Please keep in mind they can only answer during business hours, so if you contact them on a weekend you will not receive a [human] reply until Monday at the soonest. You should receive an automated reply immediately upon receipt of your email, though (check that it is not filtered by any spam protection you have in place). If you do not receive an automated reply, your own message was likely stopped by Stardock's spam filters, so you will obviously never get a reply to that particular message! If all else fails, try getting on Stardock Central's Chat and speaking with an employee directly during business hours (IRC users: irc.stardock.com, channel #Stardock or #GalCiv).

6) You bought a pirate/bootleg copy of the game.
Despite our best efforts, sellers on eBay and elsewhere continue to sell bootleg copies of GC2. There are usually many tell-tale signs that these copies are not legitimate which become obvious once you receive them: poorly printed disc art, cheap-looking packaging, missing documentation, etc. Most of these copies claim to be used "Import Version" games, and the sellers claim that documentation is excluded because it is not in English. If these copies contain a serial key at all, they are generally already registered or just random gibberish.

In any case, there is no support for users of pirate/bootleg copies. If you purchased them through eBay, you may be able to file a claim and get your money back, but there are no guarantees. If you wish to own the game with updates and support, you must purchase a legitimate copy, which will entitle you to your own serial key and all the associated benefits.

Alright, I've gotten the reg processes messed up somehow.
I boought the gold version of GC2 and I can reg GC2 and the expansion from the drop down menu in stradock central. When I try to launch Dark Avatar it askes for reg info again and tells me invalid product. Also when I start the original game my screen turns black and nothing happens.
I emailed support.
Any suggestions?

I emailed support.

Support should be able to help you with this. Make sure you got an autoreply with your ticket details to confirm that your message was received.

Hey Kryo what is the turn around for a resolution or some communication? I got the auto reply this morning but nothing since.
It really depends on just how many tickets support has to deal with.
I can't register either. And after a week with support here is my final response I receive on my case and it's now considered closed.

I apologize, but the serial number you have used has been terminated due to fraud.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected]

Anyone else run into this?

Hello,
I just bought a boxed german version of Galactic Civilizations II from an online shop (I really did, it is NOT a copied version - the box was still wrapped in plastic). After installing, I downloaded the most recent patch from the Galciv homepage, using my serial number. Then I launched the game and activated it - again with my serial number and my Email address (and it worked). After that, I noticed, that there was no sound at the intro movie, so I decided to download Stardock central. I created an account and wanted to register for GalCivII, so I opened the register page. I entered my Email address and clicked on GalCiv II, my Serial number was added automatically. But THEN, Stardock Central complained, that my email address didn't match the records. Now I dont understand that. Whats the Problem here? Afterwards I asked for my serial numbers to be sent to my Email address, but the Email I got said there weren't any serials registered for my account. But the activation was successful, so where do I have to register? Or what do I have to do? I really begin getting angry about this.

Did you use a different email address than when you activated the game and downloaded the patch?

No! But I was already thinking that perhaps I misspelled my Email address at the activation. I don't know a way to find that out, but it should be possible, shouldn't it? It can't be that the 19.90€ are ruined because of that. (then again, copyprotection nowadays...)

In that case, your best bet would be to contact [email protected].

I purchased "Galactic Civilizations II: Gold (includes Dark Avatar)" from Walmart Canada, and I found that there was no serial number on the CD case (or anywhere in the box, for that matter). I can provide proof of purchase (sales receipt, box, CDs, manual, leaflets).

I already emailed support, and they told me that they couldn't do anything for me.

This seems harsh to me. I purchased a sealed (I checked before buying), new copy of the game from a reputable retailer, and now I'm stuck?

**Update**
I was able to exchange my defective (no serial number) copy for another one at a different Walmart. The new copy had a serial number. Now happy.

I feel rather stupid about this...But I cannot play metaverse (Gold Edition). When I click the Metaverse button I cannot enter this name, the game says it does not exist. I am registered on star-dock and I know I am because I have patched the game. Please tell me how I can register this name to be able to play metaverse for this screenname.

*EDIT*
Sorry, just noticed this was to activate the game, not problems with registration/metaverse. Help would be enjoyed, however.

So, to be clear, you enter FoxOfDoom and your password and it is rejected by the game?
Oh... Really sorry.
I just now realized I have been mispelling my name and that's why I havn't been able to figure out how to play Metaverse. I was using Hyphons between the words.
Problem solved. As I said, sorry.

I just reinstalled Windows today and reactivated for the 2nd time since I've owned the game. I was just looking for the sig.bin file in my GalCiv2 directory and it wasn't there. Isn't it suppsed to be?

I reinstall Windows fairly frequently and I'm thinking I should save that sig.bin file so I don't have to activate that all the time. Am I understanding this correctly?

No, that wouldn't help you as the sig.bin file is only good on the installation it is generated on. If you reinstall windows, you will need to reactivate.

If you must regularly reinstall windows, I'd strongly suggest using a disk imaging program. If you simply restore windows from a "clean" image each time, then it will still count as the same install and your sig.bin will still be good.

I bought the Gold edition last week from Best Buy, installed it and put in the key as it requested, no problems. Then I download the Stardock Central utility and it's not taking my number. furthermore, I can't access the Metaverse stuff on the official site. Were there supposed to maybe be 2 different numbers and I'm missing one?

I've typed this bloody thing in at least 10 times. It's not working. I don't think I have the receipt anymore, but I do have the credit card statement. What can be done?

What is the exact error it gives you?

When Stardock Central starts up it asks for my serial number "on the jewel case." I only have one key on a sticker on the jewel case entitled "GC2 GOLD REG CODES."

I put it in and Stardock says "The Serial Number you have entered is invalid. Please ensure the information you have entered matches exactly from your order email.

Use the Lookup Serial Number button to resend your account information to the email address you ordered under."

Thing is, I walked into Best Buy and bought it. I didn't buy it online or anything. I registered my Stardock account and all with an email address, but I never got anything regarding a key in there.

EDIT : I've entered this thing about 15 times now, suddenly it decides to work. Go figure.

I really hate users who mis-type their password or user name and then email me about how the system sucks. Guess I'm one of them now. :\

I was also having trouble until I included the hyphens between each set of five characters in the key. It apparently does not approve of entering one long string.

Here's my problem....

I've installed the game, and the autoinstall on my cd wouldn't work properly, so I manually selected it, and the game seemingly installed. I went to attempt to activate the game and I received the following error:

Galactic Civilizations II - Gold Edition Loader: DALaunch.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point DoOpenPipeStream could not be located in the dynamic link library ScrRun.dll.

I click ok, and then receive:

Unable to launch the game. Please run setup.exe manually and play the game from the Start menu.

I've uninstalled, and tried copying the files directly to the hard drive and reinstalling, however I'm receiving the same message. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue.

Have you tried browsing to the location you installed at and running GC2DarkAvatar.exe (the game itself) directly?

Another Option? My Win XP restore failed and I had to reinstall the OS, to a different folder. Now I get a message that says, "The product appears to be validated but the serial number or the machine SID don't match." So much for online validation/registration. (((((((((((((((((((((((((

Snap Hook, simply find the file sig.bin in the game's folder and delete it, then reactivate.
