Can't activate or register the game? See here first!

Can't activate or register the game? See here first!

If you are unable to activate or register the game (via SDC, or after installing the latest patch), you're likely encountering one of a few common problems.

1) Your game came with NO serials at all.
There have been some reports of legitimate retail copies of the game not coming with a serial key at all. If you are sure your copy is legitimate and it did not come with ANY serials, contact [email protected].

2) You're using the wrong serial.
This is a simple but common mistake. The Collector's/Limited Editions of the game normally include two serial keys (one for the game, one to unlock the special extra content). Be sure you're not trying to register with the CE serial (the one that begins with GC2). Use the other one which consist of 28 letters/numbers (A-F and 0-9 ONLY) with no dashes.

3) You bought a used copy of the game.
If you (intentionally or not) bought a used copy of the game, you may receive a message when attempting to register/activate to the effect of the serial already being in use, or your email address not matching the one the game was originally registered with. Stardock will not remove an activated serial from the original owner's account and give it to you.

You have a few options in this case. You can:
  • Keep the game and stick with the 1.0 version on the disc.
  • Return the game to the place of purchase. Some retailers still accept returns, especially if they resold to you a returned copy that the original owner has effectively pirated (resale is prohibited by the EULA).
  • Contact stardock support ([email protected]) and ask about pruchasing a new serial code at reduced cost.

4) You bought the European Limited Edition.

Some copies of the Limited Edition of the game distributed in Europe were shipped with only the code to unlock the special Ltd. content, (beginning with GC2) and not an actual game serial. You can request a game serial by providing your Limited/Collector's Edition serial and email address on this form: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx

5) You bought the US Collector's or Standard Edition in June or later.
There have been several production runs that shipped to retail in the US without the correct keys. Some Collector's Editions shipped to WalMart and Fred Meyers included two CE keys (beginning with GC2-), but no game serial. Some Standard Editions have shipped to Best Buy and other retailers with a single CE key and nothing else.

In either case, please first try inputting your serial and email address on the European serial exchange page, which has been updated to include most of the serials from these production runs: http://galciv2.com/paradox/index.aspx. If that does not work, please contact [email protected] with your problem and they will provide you a game serial to use.

Please keep in mind they can only answer during business hours, so if you contact them on a weekend you will not receive a [human] reply until Monday at the soonest. You should receive an automated reply immediately upon receipt of your email, though (check that it is not filtered by any spam protection you have in place). If you do not receive an automated reply, your own message was likely stopped by Stardock's spam filters, so you will obviously never get a reply to that particular message! If all else fails, try getting on Stardock Central's Chat and speaking with an employee directly during business hours (IRC users: irc.stardock.com, channel #Stardock or #GalCiv).

6) You bought a pirate/bootleg copy of the game.
Despite our best efforts, sellers on eBay and elsewhere continue to sell bootleg copies of GC2. There are usually many tell-tale signs that these copies are not legitimate which become obvious once you receive them: poorly printed disc art, cheap-looking packaging, missing documentation, etc. Most of these copies claim to be used "Import Version" games, and the sellers claim that documentation is excluded because it is not in English. If these copies contain a serial key at all, they are generally already registered or just random gibberish.

In any case, there is no support for users of pirate/bootleg copies. If you purchased them through eBay, you may be able to file a claim and get your money back, but there are no guarantees. If you wish to own the game with updates and support, you must purchase a legitimate copy, which will entitle you to your own serial key and all the associated benefits.

You mean I can still use it?

Yes. The text wasn't changed on that page, but the exchanger was updated with all the known CE serials that did not get matching game serials.

I have tried that serial number exchange you mentioned and it said that the serial I entered is already claimed by a different email address! What should I do?

In this case you were likely inadvertently sold a used or pirate copy of the game. Unfortunately we only support the original purchaser of legitimate copies; once a serial has been registered by someone it cannot be reused by another. If this is what happened to you, you can stick with what you have on the disc (the original 1.0 version), contact [email protected] about purchasing a new serial-only at reduced cost, or return/exchange it at your place of purchase.

Here's my little story about the serial number activation process.

I bought the GalCiv II from Best Buy a couple months ago and installed it. I've been pretty busy and didn't get around to playing it until recently. I played the game Saturday night, then decided to go ahead and click the update game button in the start menu on Sunday. I downloaded the update and it installed just fine. Then I went to play it again, but now it's asking for a serial number that is found in the worst possible place, on the back of the gem case. Where did I put that gem case... hmm.

After an hour of searching, no luck. I was so irritated, that I began looking for serial number cracks just to get through this process. I also tried uninstalling the update... but this doesn't appear possible. I ran across a 1.4G download that promised to have a S/N, but didn't exactly feel like waiting to redownload the entire game when I already had it installed.

Miraculously, my memory finally kicked in and I recalled that I used a gem case to prop up my LCD a few weeks ago because the monitor arm was losing strength. It turns out this was the GalCiv CD. What a relief.

I suppose I should know by now to write these serial numbers down, but when it wasn't necessary to install and play the game, I didn't think about it again. When I installed the update, it told me I'd need a S/N, but at that point I assumed that if I needed the S/N for the update, it must have demanded one when I installed initially.

If the S/N is only demanded once, I think it would make more sense to do it when you install, and not when you update. Fortunately, I was able to find the CD after an exhaustive search.

I don't know why you wouldn't put in the serial number when you installed the game. But yeah, I thought it was odd to have it on the case. I'm afraid I if I get a new computer later and find the number rubbed off. I'm glad you found it.

That's where it is located for pretty much every game. Personally, I copy the key for any software I get into a text file that I keep a copy of on all my computers, so it's handy when I need it

Also, if you register the game to your stardock account (via the register link at the bottom of the page, or via SDC), we'll keep it for you. A quick visit to the support page or an option in SDC, and you can have the serials for all of your registered SD products emailed to you at any time. With SDC, you can also redownload the entire game at any time.

Yeah those are great features to get not only your serial number online, but the game too, if you loose it. I don't think any other company would email you your serial number back to you. I just think it's odd to have the serial number on the outside of the case and not inside (on any game). Outside it can be rubbed off or destroyed in some way.

Hi, I just got GCII, installed and patched it, but when I try to run it it asks me for my email and serial number. When I enter these it says 'Error activating product' and gives me this log:
-----------------------------------------------------
Application start: 2006-12-26 2.0.29

Downloading test internet data...

Download: success

Test internet data - success

Mode 1, short info

Submitting activation request...

Error activating the product

Please check the serial number that you have entered and ensure that it is associated with the email you used. Try to activate the product again. If you are using Stardock Central you can right-click on the product and attempt to activate without reinstalling. Please include this log file when contacting [email protected].
-----------------------------------------------------
OK, I think, and register an account at stardock. I enter my serial number to register, and it gives me error 3, serial number not linked to email address. Yes, I know it isn't, that's why I'm trying to link it. Does anyone know what I need to do to play this game?
As the error log notes, please contact [email protected] with a copy of the log. They will know what the error codes mean and should be able to help resolve the issue.

In the meanwhile, you should also be able to reinstall and play the unpatched version without needing to activate it.

OK, will do. Just wondering if anyone else had had this problem before. Thanks for your time.

I hope someone here can help me with this...
I just purchased the game today; brand new in the box and everything. However, it looks like my jewel case didn't come with a activation key. There are no inserts or anything in the case, it's just completely blank. That's fine, I said to myself. I sent a mail to support and figured I could play the unmodified game for a couple days while they got back to me.
But when I try to install the 1.0X patch and play, it STILL asks for an activation key. Of course I don't have one, so when I close that box, it won't let me play. I'm getting very frustrated with this, having purchased a copy of the game and now not being able to play it. Is there something I'm missing or something I can do to get around this until stardock gets back to me?

If the 1.0X patch is requiring activation, you can reinstall and run 1.0 right off the retail disc in the meanwhile (with no patches at all).

Gosh Kryo its like you know everything. Care to choose me six numbers (0-49) for next weeks lottery.

You've fixed my 'activating after downloading latest update and copying it to pc where game is but which doesn't have internet connection' problem without me even getting so far as to ask you the question. And the response to my 'email off the gobbledegook to support' was instantaneous! I am humbled in your presence.

Like TopGumby I also thought some of the characters in my prod-id were the letter O not the number zero, which took a while to get past. Maybe the 'key it out again, stoopid' message could point out that the prod-id consists only of hex chars to aid the hard of thinking like me.

Obviously the computer I am on has Internet Access. As this computer is in the master bedroom, and not a more accessible area of the house, I have to play games elsewhere so that it's out of the way (I didn't have this problem at my apartment but now I'm back from college and waiting to go to basic training). Normally, this type of game is great for offline play. Now I just downloaded the update from this comp and put it on the gaming computer using a flash drive. It asked for the Serial Number (aggravating, but acceptable)... After making a useless attempt at looking through the booklet (which was in long term storage due to moving) and finding nothing, I finally found the torn paper shred with the serial number on it. I entered it in and hit proceed. ERROR. Cannot contact the registration server. I don't freaking care if it's registered but its a single player game with no real multi-player (even LAN multi, which would have been sweet). Why can't I just type in the Serial Number and play the game?!?! Why does activation for an OFFLINE game require ONLINE registration? For that matter, why did I have to download Stardock to use this forum when they already made me verify my account through email?

Kyro's suggestion aside (I've owned the game for some time now and have no interest in playing it without the changes in the update), what can I do?

I already contacted support.

Then you've already done everything you can. They should be able to help you Monday.

If I have a CE disk, new computer and operating system is it going to make me e-mail for a Sig file again?
I have the GC CE and have just installed it on my new computer with new operating system do I have to get a sig file again to use it? If I get Dark Avatar expansion am I going to need another Sig file for it too? It takes more than a day turn around so I am curious.

If you install off the disk and do not patch, no. However if you install the latest patch you will indeed need to reactivate.
And if I buy the DA disk expansion for use with my current GC-2? Will I have to e-mail a sig file again for it?
The disc-by-mail option for DA does not require activation.

However, you may be interested to know that the retail box of GC2:Gold includes the latest version of GC2 (1.5) as well as DA, and does not require activation on either. It also includes a $10 rebate for existing owners of retail GC2, so if you include the rebate, buying GC2:Gold at retail would actually be ~$10 cheaper than having a DA disc mailed direct.

Got a problem: Purchased the Deluxe edition last year (March?). My disk crashed. Reinstalled on my replacement disk. Tried to update, but keep getting error message that I am using the wrong serial number. From you posting, apparently I am suppose to a unique number for the Deluxe Edition, rather than the one on the jewel box. My problem is that I kept the original disks in the original jewel box, and the manual. I apparently discarded the documentation with the unique number. Am I out of luck?

If you registered it previously (which would be the case if you had patched up and activated it), just pop on over to this page and enter the email address you registered the game to. You'll get an email at that address with your serial in it.
Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately I changed internet provider from "att.net" to "sbc.net" since I first registered. Therefore, sending something to the address that I used when I purchased the game, will be returned as account closed.

In that case, just log on to the forum with your old account, go to the My Account link at the top of the page, then go to the Stardock Account link, where you can change the email address on the account (and the serial registrations along with it).
