So I've done a little thinking over the last few days (hey! every now and then it happens
) and I started thinking that perhaps the Democratic primary season that never ends may be part of a grander plan, perhaps even rising to the conspiracy level. Now, please don't assume I'm a tin-foil hat wearing X-Files type individual that always sees conspiracies in everything going on around him. I'm far from it, and I really don't think my thoughts (that I'm about to share) on the seemingly un-ending Democratic nomination process reflect any real conspiracy, but... I have to suggest that in many ways things are playing out for the Democratic party about as well as they could ever hope for.
Even as Obama and Hillary Clinton continue to fight it out in the primaries their pre-ordained opponent on the other side, one John McCain (who is, despite recent appearances and comments that he has made to try to sound more like Bush), has barely been able to buy a second of media coverage. Instead, the media has continued to cover the Democratic fight for the nomination while almost completely ignoring the Republican nominee select.
Is it possible that Hillary Clinton hasn't exited the Democratic race despite what has been obvious for some time now (that she can't win the nomination) because the DNC has been keeping the race going to keep their opponent from gaining any momentum? The longer the race runs the closer we get to November and the less face time McCain gets while his potential opponent(s) keep their faces in the news.
I really don't think it has been planned out this way, but in a lot of ways the cynic in me thinks the Democratic party couldn't have asked for a better script to set themselves up for the run towards November. They've got an economy that seems to be in the toilet, a housing market that has been Greenspanned/Bernanked (think Borked) up pretty badly, and fuel prices (gasoline and diesel) that are rising quicker than most people can deal with along with food prices that are rising thanks to increased transportation costs and the stupidity that is the search for Ethanol to be used as an alternative to petroleum based products. They also have free media coverage during what would otherwise be a fairly dead part of the campaign season because their nominee hasn't been decided.
If the Democratic party blows this next election it really could be the end of the world as they know it.
